Lost Planet 3 Sales Fall Way Short of Capcom's Expectations
Written By
View author's profile

Despite Lost Planet 3 not being completely terrible, sales of Spark Unlimited's first foray into the series has seemingly left players cold, with the game limping to just 300,000 sales worldwide.

"Sales of 'Lost Planet 3' (for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC) were below expectations due in part to intensifying competition in the European and US markets," Capcom stated in its latest financial results.

The game is part of Capcom's ongoing attempts to appeal more to its western market, roping in western developers to give its biggest franchises a kick up the backside. Capcom is hoping for better results from Dead Rising 3 on Xbox One, forecasting 1.2 million copies sold.

These sales forecasts are still comparatively low, with the original Dead Rising selling 1.8 million copies on Xbox 360 and Dead Rising 2 selling over 2.4 million units across all formats.

It's not all doom and gloom for Capcom however, with Dragon's Dogma shifting 650,000 units and Resident Evil: Revelations selling approximately one million copies, resulting in overall sales being up 7.2% compared to last year.

Game wasn't very good, And the multiplayer was dead before the end of the launch week.

Still sucks to see it fail, If I didn't like it i'm sure many others loved it.

I'm not surprised another of their games fell short of their sales expectations. It seems to me like they set the standard of success entirely too high when it comes to their product. I'm just hoping that these "low numbers" that have been coming out for their games don't result in the premature deaths of some good game franchises.

You're telling me they actually expected this game to sell? Huh... Wonder if I could borrow for a couple days what Capcom has been smoking for the past few years... Should have just followed in Lost Planet 2's footsteps and added a story, the gameplay was great on that one... Way to kill another great game...

Pretty boring and the stupidly hard achievements just put me off even more.

No wonder Capcom will follow THQ soon enough. They're investing their remaining resources into terrible games no one asked for like Lost Planet and Remember.. Me?

- Ace Attorney
- Breath of Fire
- Resident Evil
- Mega Man
- Monster Hunter‎
- Street Fighter‎
- Viewtiful Joe

Look at the popular franchises they own, they obviously need new management ASAP.

I remember the first being a decent game when it came out especially since nothing else was really good. But the atrocious 2nd game and it's ridiculous achievements put most everybody off of this franchise. Yes Capcom we will never forget about Lost Planet 2's achievement atrocity.

Of course it wasn't going to do well, Lost Planet 3 took away everything that made Lost Planet 2 'fun' like the lack of 4 player co-op, the awesome choice in skins like being able to play as Wesker, Dom/Marcus or Frank from Dead Rising. One of the great things about Lost Planet 2 was playing with friends to take down giant monsters which is what Lost Planet 3 was lacking. Lost Planet 2 was kind like Monster Hunter in it's own way.

@7 seriously. There is absolutely no reason at all that Megaman especially could not have been brought into this generation yet.

@7 I don't know why Ace Attorney and Monster Hunter are on that list, both of them have had new games released in the last couple months.

Also, did you actually play Remember Me? I thought it was a really good game.

Capcom is such a joke company. They are trying way too hard to get a part of the huge western shooter market. Instead, we of the West lol at them, and they lost their Japanese customers.

Dead Rising 3 is the only thing Crapcum have going for them right now. What become of the 80/90s giant? Growing up these guys were phenomenal, now their money grabbing cumflinging twats.

That's what happens when you remove co-op. Lost Planet 2 co-op was crazy fun. At least 8 people on my friends list alone didn't get it 'coz of that very reason.

@7 I agree I would love a monster Hunter for Xbox, its great on the Wii-U. I Lost Planet 1 was great Multi was so fun on the PC before I had an Xbox it was my introduction to 360 achievements and was hooked lol, lost planet 2 achievements sucked, I finished it and only had like 100g bleh grinded a bit and ended up with 150-200 double bleh turned me off getting lost planet 3 all together although could be good?

@13 I loved Dino Crisis 1 and 2, Regina had the awesome color hair.

People will retroactively point to the review scores and say it failed because it wasn't a good game, ignoring the fact that barely anyone cared at any point during the announcement or build-up to release.

The last Capcom games I enjoyed were Resident Evil and Megaman games. Now they were from a long time ago, so that shows what has happened to the games from the once mighty Capcom. Hopefully they can urn it around soon.

Lost Planet 2 left such a bad taste in my mouth that I was not interested in 3 unless it got stellar reviews.

It also had some of the hardest, most unattainable achievements ever.

Stop hiring B-rate western developers.
And stop blaming the western market because you didn't catch up with the times.

Really hope DR 3 will do. DR 3 is one of my most wanted games out this month. Good luck to Capcom and their future.

I avoid capcom because so many of their games are disgustingly hard achievements. Or they have one or two that are just stupid to try and get.

Me and the mates played LP2 to death because it was a fantastic co-op game which had us pitched against almighty odds in epic scenarios. We didnt play LP2 for "story" and sure as hell not for the multiplayer because if you wants story or multiplayer action there are far better cheaper alternatives.

I fear this is the end of the series which is a shame but its not the first series Capcom has managed to completely crash and burn over these last few years. Dead Rising 3 has a chance with it being arguably the second most talked about Xbone exclusive but damn did they nearly kill that as a series too with re-releasing DR2 but with a new main character... over saturation when its least wanted is truly their forte

LP2 killed the franchise, Capcom thought "hey Gears of War is popular, lets just copy that"

@30 LP2 is nothing like Gears of War... Only thing it has in common with Gears of War is Dom and Marcus as character and they are both 3rd person shooters.

I enjoyed lost planet 1 and 2 but honestly the third installment just takes a shit on the franchise with gameplay mechanics i would expect from a PS1 title and no customisation
