Thief Devs Dump Poorly Received QTE Sequences

Eidos Montreal has made more changes to Thief as a result of fan feedback.

Last month the developer revealed that it had dumped the game’s XP system, which rewarded kills instead of stealth. Fans responded negatively to it and as a result it was taken out. Now the developers have done the same with Thief’s QTE mechanics, which were also received negatively following their reveal at E3 earlier this year.

“We’re not implementing them,” said community manager Valerie Bourdeau on Eidos Montreal’s development blog

“To begin with, there were very few instances of QTEs in the game; in fact there was only one in that whole hour-long E3 demo. However, given the strong reactions it evoked in the press and the community, it was an easy decision to do away with them entirely. So we’re not doing it. No quick time.”

A new batch of Thief screenshots were released yesterday. Get them all through here. Thief is out on February 25th 2014 in North America and February 28th 2014 in Europe for current and next-gen consoles.

This is what I like to hear - a developer actively listening to fan feedback and amending the problems. It definitely beats the 'fuck you, got mine' attitude of some developers.

It seems odd they would have removed the xp system when the easiest solution to the uproar over getting xp for kills would have been to not give xp for kills.

Regardless of that though I do agree with the above comments and I am glad they're actually listening to the feedback. I can't wait to try play it in February.

@3 Technically they didn't get rid of it, just instead of xp you use the funds you receive for the things you steal to buy upgrades. It probably works the same, just instead of being rewarded for being a good killer you're rewarded for being a great thief which makes more sense.

@4 Yeah, that's right. I forgot about reading that in the article last month. Getting rid of the xp pop ups on the screen like that probably helps increase the immersion too I would imagine.

I have been an opponent to this game since I seen it what it had become. As a huge fan of the originals, and have been continually dissappointed with each new bit of info about this new game.

That said, removing the XP and QTEs is a welcome move. but for fans of the original, there is a lot more work to do. Bring back Stephen Russell to do Garrets voice for one, instead of the generic bland voice they have right now.

Also, this looks like a much more action oriented game than a stealth game, which is not in the spirit of the original games.

@1 very nicely said. Exactly what I thought.

Thief is supposed to be about stealth, not actions. QTE just doesn't fit the atmosphere & theme of Thief.

Hopefully this will set an example for other devs going into this generation. Certain games could get away with it in the PS2 era but today it just seems somewhere between player hand holding and lazy development. Nothing breaks immersion worse than seeing a brightly colored ABX or Y on the screen. Resident Evil please take note.

Yay, someone realises that QTE's are fucking shit.....

if you want to show off movements in a fight or have a mental running away as shit explodes, make it a cut-scene


never really tried the originals of the series, my PC back then was woefully underpowered and the money would've been spent on upgrading rather than on new games - will get this on steam when I can

Nothing destroys a good game like QTE's. I mean, one once and awhile is fine...but for the most part, they just suck.

It's nice that the dev is listening when fans complain about the game and modifying things and all, but what worries me about this backtracking is that the dev fundamentally misunderstood what game they were making from the outset.

I have a lot of love for the Thief series, but I'm still iffy on this entry...

I hadn't had a problem with QTE's until Bayonetta. I lost so many times on the battle at the end of Chapter 2 due to the QTE. I couldn't get it for whatever reason. Even when I replay the mission I always fail it a few times. I've 1000'd it twice :(

I appreciate developers listening to feedback, but how they thought these systems would make for a good addition to the Thief franchise in the first place eludes me.
