Destiny Inspired by Dark Souls, Says Bungie

Bungie has shared some new information on its upcoming MMO-ish FPS hybrid Destiny, revealing a few of the game’s inspirations.
One of the these is Gearbox’s Borderlands. Lead investment designer Tyson Green says Destiny will offer a similar amount of loot, but "less randomly generated stuff” and hopefully gear that is "a little more interesting, a bit more meaningful to you."
So that one’s a little obvious. More surprising is the influence of Dark Souls. Green praised that game’s lack of hand-holding and the community it fostered, with people gathering together online to share secrets and tips.
"It made the Dark Souls experience so much better, because you were essentially playing it in a virtual co-op mode,” he said.
"The notion that the game is not just a completely open book that's spoon-fed to you in little nibbles like baby-food is something that we really appreciate, and we thought Destiny should have a little bit more of that actual depth.”
According to Green, Destiny will feature tough encounters where it’s not immediately obvious how you will succeed. "Oh my god!”, he said. “You’re actually going to play a triple-A videogame and fail a lot!"
In order to appeal to all tastes, however, Green adds that not all missions and objectives will play out in this way. Apparently, some of the story missions will be easier to progress through, designed to appeal to those who just want to chill while blasting through baddies.
Looks like Destiny has it all then. An intriguing world, interesting lore, highly regarded developers, loot coming out of its ears, capes (!), story-based missions to waft through and plenty of secrets and challenges along the way. We can’t wait.
Destiny is out on September 9th, 2014.
