Tom Clancy's The Division
The Division's Post-Catastrophic World Makes Scavenging for Food and Water Essential

Tom Clancy's The Division will place an emphasis on scavenging food and water, Ubisoft Massive has said.

Taking place within a post-catastrophic New York, the open world, third-person shooter MMO will force players to gather and manage resources. In this setting, food and water is like currency.

"Consider that our game is a lot about the fall of society, and things that we take for granted in our everyday life such as clean water and food, they suddenly become scarce resources in the game," design director Axel Rydby told the Examiner.

"Not only do you actually have to go out and look for food and water, but [they] become very valuable and rare resources that can be used to trade and stuff like that. But when it comes to having to drink water and eat food to be able to survive, that's not really what we want from it. Food and water will be a very important part of the game, but players will not need to eat and drink to stay alive."

"When we start the game, the player's character only has his go-bag with him, right? When it becomes activated, that's the only thing he can really bring with him. In that go-bag he roughly has 72 hours of supplies, he's got his weapons and his gear, and that's what he starts with.”

Rydby added, "If society fell and suddenly you had to hunt for food and water, you couldn't go down to your local supermarket and buy whatever you want, you have to actually start conserving it and start to think about how you're spending those valuable resources that you have.”

As for transport around the city, game designer Mathias Karlson suggested that methods of transport are still currently under consideration.

"The way you navigate and move through the city or a game that is open in nature, it's very core to how you experience the world. We are currently investigating what is the best for our game, what can we do to give you the best experience as a player because that is, in the end, what's most important to us."

Can't wait for this. Glad to see that you don't actually need to eat and drink in order to stay alive through out the game.

not trying to be nit-picky really, but there's no way that string of lights would still be there.

The whole needing food/water reminds me of a game I played on Playstation 2 a life time ago called Disaster Report.

A really creative/innovative game for being on PS2

Can't wait to play The Division though, it looks like it will be amazing.

At the risk of sounding ignorant, is this a next gen only game? I've been watching trailers and the like and a mate and I really want to get it when it comes out but neither of us are making the jump to next gen until at least next Christmas and was wondering if this might be one of the few triple-A's bridging the gap so to speak and coming out on current gen?(or is it old gen now, lol)

Still excited for this game, but this has kind of put a dampener on it, I was really hoping this would have survival aspects with the food and water being essential for survival. It would also give a reason for the pvp to be in the game. Honestly what is the point of being able to kill each other, fair enough you can probably steal weapons, but I imagined it as a killing to survive sort of scenario. Basically killing each other will just be for griefing like GTA, this could have been so much better.

Sounds all interesting. I'll keep my eye in this but in reality, The Witcher 3 will be my most anticipated game next year.

This game is my most wanted game ever since I seen this back in june. I can not wait for this beast!!! Let's just hope this game don't turn into another defiance were you have done everything in the game in a week and have to wait 3 months just for a little tiny dlc. A mmo imo is were you get endless content thrown at you and you never get to say....I done it all. That's what I want! Please don't go defiance on us. I loved the game alot but it was full of bugs and it claimed to be a mmo but clearly it wasnt. It had mmo elements but was not what I expected.

This, being a Ubi product, means that the PS4 will be the lead format, right? No doubt Sony will have paid for some genuinely exclusive (and possibly bad) content?

#19 No Ubisoft said The Division coming late 2014. But maybe delaying to 2015 from Ubisoft in 2014 when they talking about it. We have wait and see. But I believe and all gamers and writers believe it is coming late 2014. :)

But if delayed it then good thing game is going polishes up and improving too. :)

#18 Also PS4 is not lead for Ubi because Ubisoft still bring many games for Xbox One, Wii U, Xbox 360, 3DS and PC in their lifetime. Ubi never said lead. It is just bring some exclusive DLCs for PS4 that is all. :)

I would imagine grocery stores would be ransacked first. I would go to the local gas station instead, great place for resources. Hot dogs, sandwiches, chips, drinks, condoms, fuel, etc.
