This new Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII trailer highlights the RPG’s new battle system.

“A lot has evolved in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, the last installment of the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy,” explains Square Enix.

“Most notable of these changes is the battle system, which pits players squarely in control of Lightning. If you've played our recently released demo, you'll know what we're talking about, but for those of you who have yet to visit Nova Chrysalia check out this brand new Battle Trailer for a preview of a taste of the revamped ATB battle system awaiting you.”

Give it a look below. You can get queue the demo for download through here now. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is out on February 11th in North America and February 14th in Europe.

I know it's silly but I'd really rather it was called Final Fantasy XIII-3 or FF13-3: Lightning Returns.

Haven't played the demo yet but I really liked 13 and 13-2 so I'll almost certainly get this. It'd need to review really badly and have the demo be terrible to put me off.

As for remakes, I'd love FF7-10 to be remade. While I love innovation and new things, the nostalgia factor combined with the fact they are actually still great games leaves me wanting more.

I played the demo yesterday and as much as I'm a big FF fan, this series really hasn't captured my attention like previous instalments.

I miss the days of the turn-based system the older games used like FF8/10 and FF14 doesn't look any better on going back to these sadly.

The demo didn't really impress me but it's been a while since I've played a new RPG game so I guess I'll get it.

I'm pretty sure this is the first Final Fantasy since VIII that I will not be preordering. I was hoping the demo would sway me, but no. I too miss the turn based combat. Bravely Default is what I wish Final Fantasy still was. Aside from the linearity, I enjoyed 13. They fixed that a bit with 13-2, but the DLC and ending, true ending as well, were frustrating. I had 100%'ed the game before a majority of the costumes/battle characters came out, with zero replay value. And first being annoyed that you had to throw money at Square for what has been referred to as the "true ending", I was even more annoyed when it also wrapped nothing up. Now we're in the future, with a single character party, with a combat system that feels less classic Final Fantasy, more hack and slash-ish. Animations are great, I'm just not feeling it. Obviously all opinion, more or less shared by the other Final Fantasy friends I know. Perhaps I misjudged. Guess we'll see when it drops to $20.
