Amazon has bought Californian studio Double Helix, the developer of Killer Instinct for Xbox One and the upcoming multiplatform Strider reboot.

"Amazon has acquired Double Helix as part of our ongoing commitment to build innovative games for customers," the retailer told TechCrunch in a statement.

The Killer Instinct franchise, meanwhile, will remain at Microsoft.

"We have thoroughly enjoyed working with Double Helix and wish them success in their next endeavour," a Microsoft spokesperson told Polygon.

"We want all of our loyal fans to know that the Killer Instinct team at Microsoft is not changing and that the franchise will remain with Microsoft Studios.

“We remain dedicated to delivering a great experience and plan to announce our new development partner soon. We're excited about the future of this popular franchise."

Amazon is expected to launch an Android console later this year. The acquisition of Double Helix will considerably strengthen the company’s internal development resources.

Amazon making games? Seems a weird idea, but hey I'm sure people said the same about Microsoft 15 years ago.

This is terrible news tbh...Double Helix were a dev that was making things for fans...and doing it damn well. I just hope that the KI game goes forward in the same direction. Lots of patches, brand new characters, and re imaginings of the classics.
This is a shame...if DH was for sale, I don't see why MS didn't just pick them up tbh. Keep the a part of MS...would have been awesome!

That's a shame. I didn't think it'd be long before somebody snatched DH up after their recent boom, bit I assumed it'd be MS. Now they're limited to Android games...

Why are android consoles even a thing, and why would anyone pay $250 for one

if amazon bought a company and then limited itself to phone games would be a huge blow to gamers but mainly themselves. it doesn't make sense to take away from a company and limit themselves to only phones when the idea is to make money. so i doubt it'll just be phone games they make and or back. plus there still at microsoft just a different company owns them, don't freak out people

@8 they are popular as if you get the sku working companys can easily port the android phone and tablet games.

@2 problem is Microsoft have been making games for close to 20+ years and nobody questions it as it was all pc titles, problem is amazon doesn't have any game studio or teams internal that can make games so you will see them buy 4-5 smaller studios to bolster there ranks.
Either way the console will most likely fail just like the other 3-4 android gaming systems out there most people just do not care

An Android based console, eh? At least Ouya will have some company while gathering dust on store shelves.

Man, Double Helix did an awesome job with Killer Instinct and Strider looked pretty good so far. I hope they follow through with season 2 and Fulgore.

#11 I really hope you're wrong about them buying 4-5 small companies because if they do I have a horrible feeling I know which one would be next and I want their game on a console, not android. I would guess they would look at Hello Games (No Man Sky), or possibly Ninja Bee.

I assume this means we can expect a Kindle console.

I think Microsoft would have considered buying them but they would probably want to see more of their work first. Look how long it took them to buy Twisted Pixel. On that subject im surprised Microsoft haven't bought Harmonix.

I hope their gamble pays off. Double Helix wasn't an exciting studio before Killer Instinct. Battleship the Movie the Game, the disappointing Silent Hill: Homecoming... They just weren't that kind of studio. Killer Instinct is easily the best game they've developed but Ken Lobb was there for them. On Strider they have no adviser like Lobb, so we'll see Double Helix put what they've learned in action and hopefully come up with something significantly better than their pre-Microsoft days.

....Amazon should be trying to buy a dev that actually makes mobile games, they also need to stay the hell away from home consoles unless they are selling them.

@#5 I highly doubt many companies in gaming bussiness could even afford to buy Blizzard, not to mention they are part of Activision and they have more money than they need already. They will never part with Blizzard, me thinks.

A studio that makes reboots to a company that sells used items. Seems logical to me lol.

If Amazon is smart, they'll be Double Helix's Publisher and let them go multiplatform(something M$ does not do once a franchise/developer starts making them money)

They were partnered with EA and MTV games but then they got dropped and were unsure what to do. I think they would of agreed to being bought at that point. They ended up going independent but I was surprised Microsoft didn't just swoop in then.
