In 1998, Kouichi Yotsui got stuck on the roof of Capcom’s offices. It was a freezing cold night and he had no way of calling for help. He thought he might die. So with no other option available to him, Yotsui climbed down the side of the multi-storey building, knowing that one false move might end in a fatal fall.
Yotsui survived and one year later the game he was working on hit arcades. It featured a ninja called Strider Hiryu, who was capable of scaling walls and climbing along ceilings. The young developer had translated his terrifying experience into one of the game’s most distinctive features. Strider wouldn’t have been quite so memorable without his brush with death.
Anyway, we’ve reviewed the new version of Strider through the link. Has Double Helix done the classic justice, or has it besmirched Yotsui’s efforts?
