Microsoft Studios boss Phil Spencer has been chatting about Gears of War on Twitter overnight, reaffirming that the game is still in the early stages of development.

"Still working through plan,” wrote Spencer in response to a fan enquiry. "I can say first original GoW from BT has to reignite franchise and grow it, won't be a quick turn."

He added, ”And I believe we've built the right team to achieve that goal, I just want to give them the time.”

Microsoft recently bought the rights to Gears of War from creators Epic Games, ensuring that the franchise would remain Xbox exclusive. The newly-formed Black Tusk studio is taking charge of development.

  • Could go either way this... hope its a good way......
  • In b4 "horror show"
  • Just include a proper Horde mode this time. I put 100's of hours into Horde on Gears 3 (and a hell of a lot into 2 as well), but whilst I loved the campaign on JudgEment, the co-operative modes just weren't up to the task of keeping me interested.
  • all i can say is take your time make it perfect, im sick off all these rush jobds that destroy games
  • Judgement was a disaster. But I have faith that if they take their time, the next one will be better.
  • Don't get me wrong I love Gears of War but the problem is I can't play fast paced games like that any more as I'm a slow paced Gamer now.
  • Hmmmm. Remake, origin or set after 3? What does everyone favour? I just hope for a kick-ass single player and horde modes. Never been fussed with the multiplayer.
  • Urgh...
  • Gears 3 killed it for me. Gears PC or Gears 2 was the best. Do a Gears of war 10 year anniversary or remake 2
  • just go back to the original gears 1 format. gears 1 lobby system only, matchmaking is awful, people should be able to choose the maps rather than hope to play one they like. go back to the original style of corridor type maps like canals, rather than over sized ones like sandbar, ruins, etc, the compact maps were what made gears such a great game. remove active reload damage which wasn't good i gears 1. remove the over powered weapons, grenade tagging walls buildings, etc. remove mantle kicks. do change tagging people back to the B button rather than the awful judgement system. have a co-op section based on playing as the locust. keep beast and horde but come up with other modes and get rid of the ones in judgement as they were awful. have commands for you AI, some times when downed the AI just sit there and don't revive you so commands to revive would be good. have a map section of all the original gears 1 maps so we can play those in private mp which we couldn't in judgement.
  • Take your time. Gears 1 and 2 were my Multiplayer games. Then Gears 3 I couldn't get on with the Multiplayer. Gears Judgement was an ok story but Multiplayer was awful.
  • PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE,.. give us a great campaign story, really ringing the neck of our shiny new XB1's, making use of every bit of its next gen power.. this NEEDS to look, play, sound and just generally BE,. AWESOME... anything less would be a travesty...
  • i would actually like an X1 remake of gears 1, like they did with halo anniversary if it could be done, i doubt they would go to all that trouble rather than create a new game.
  • I wish they weren't making more of this game.
  • @14 if they get it right like they did with gears 1 then great but if it's made like judgement then it's pointless.
  • This was not what I wanted to hear :( How can you release a new xbox, and not have a new Halo and Gears somewhere in the near future? Titanfall looks good, but it won't sell consoles like a new Gears or Halo...
  • @16 We are getting a Halo game this year, we just don't know what it will be. As for GoW, this is just my opinion, but I think they should do a new story with a new squad and everything.
  • @17 could be what they are doing not a bad idea. I am wondering if black tusk is still working on those 2 other unannounced games or were they canned (the shangheist one or whatever)
  • Save Carmine nuff said :D
  • #16 i agree they should have had a new Halo or new GoW with the launch of the X1. i just hope they go back to the way the mp was in GoW1, lobbies where you picked the game type and the map you wanted to play the game on rather than the crappy way they do it now with match making.
  • Can't fucking wait for a new gears!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • @17 I guess you haven't been following the news because all signs are pointing to Halo 2 a Anniversary this year and Halo 5 next year. As for Gears, I don't see any scenario for continuing the franchise that I get could excited about. The way I see it, it'll end up being one of the following: A. The Pendulum Wars: Human vs. Human, no thanks. B. Some Faction of the Locust Survived: That would just be retreading familiar ground, no thanks. C. Marcus and co. Are Pulled out of Retirement to Face "Some New Threat": This could be interesting, but people would complain about no Locust. D. A Combination of B&C: Basically Halo 4 all over again. Get people hyped about new enemies, new locations, and then you just end up shooting the same old Locust for 90% of the game. Again, no thanks. Besides a few annoying plot threads that remained unanswered, Gears 3 ended the trilogy just fine, and that should of been the end of it. Then along came Judgement, and while Baird and Cole make great supporting characters, focusing a game on them proved to be a bad idea. I want to be excited about a new Gears game, but none of these scenarios interest me in the slightest. Hopefully Black Tusk comes up with something great and proves me wrong.
  • Well at least it did not go to People Can Fly, Gears would have been dead if they got to make another game.
  • hope it's a different enemy since it won't make sense bringing the Locust.
  • I'm hesitant to say it's done, because Judgment ruining player's expectations and willingness to buy, combined with the fact there's not really anywhere they could go with the story except another prequel maybe (IMO)... not sure what they're intent on doing.
  • I love all Gears of Wars, but I think it will really have a hard time being the same major success as it was before, considering now all the top AAA games that are out or will be coming out. When GOW first came about it's only competition was Halo and CoD, so it might still sell, but just not like it did before that's all I'm saying..
  • "Hit me with your best shot", I've been chomping at the bit for a new Gears to cover up the mess from Judgment. Take your time and make It right and you will be rewarded with all the riches and praise you desire!
  • A prequel can work and the timeline between 2 and 3
  • Gears is dead unless Cliff returns & does it with Epic. Besides, I'll never buy an XBone for one freaking Game no-matter how good it turns out to be! Lol, does anyone think it could actually be any good with newly formed Black Tusk developing it?
  • Actually just started playing Judgement yesterday. Surprised at how very few ppl play it online. It seems more arcady, sort of like CoD if it makes sense. I used to love gears up till third part, because of the time you had to put in to sharpen skills in MP, but this is just silly. I haven't played this game in over a year and already snatched up first place in 2 out of 4 games in free for all... Minimum player count does not help either... Disappointment continues, but at least I get to play through campaign with friend and to find out you have to beat it twice (once to unlock insane, which we usually go for right away) is just silly. Didn't even know there was no horde mode instead they put some survival mode with no progression and no depth compared to horde mode. how do you throw out such iconic game mode is beyond me... It's almost like CoD releasing without co-op in one form or other...
  • Gears can still work the world is full of unique characters. As soon as it gets officially announced that's when I'll buy an Xbox One.
  • Right and on topic, they would really reinvent the franchise to pull old fans back in, though chances are after such a long wait no matter how bad game is (even if it is atrocious) we will all buy to at least relieve and remind ourselves of how awesome gears used to be, if nothing else...
  • Unsure why they need to make another gears game. Locust is gone. What new threat would they face? And what the hell kind of world do they live on with constant threats lol. I don't know, some things are best left untouched when finished.
  • Gears 1 and Gears 2 were the best, gears 3 was fun but lacked the hardcore adrenaline of the first 2 and lacked on the blood and gib animations, i went back to the originals, horde was awesome but arcadey in 3 make it hardcore again, bring the learning curve back, it makes good players suffer with casual tactics and buffed weapons, focus on campaign replayability as well as multiplayer i loce gears but hated and ashamed of judgment having the name attached to it, please stay far from judgment
  • @22 EDAY! Brand new franchise brand new studio no better place to start, have a pendulum wars prologue too
  • Judgment was cool, i didnt like they had to change the controls around to CoD style but I adapted. Side story campaigns never get the credit they deserve other than that, it's fun to play with friends, (just like most co-op games now a days).
  • judgment was alright, it was the controls that really turned me away. The stupid crosshair shouldnt be there either. After playing gears 3 for the last couple years, gears 1 and 2 just feel clunky if you will. I can wall bounce in gears 1 or 2 but I feel like im just being an idiot lol but when I play 3 its like butter and thats what I like. Gears 3 is great except a couple maps and the retro lancer. Only problems I have had with it, sawed off is annoying but you can tell when people are using it so just keep your distance. anyway back on topic I will buy and play any gears game cause in all honesty judgment wasnt that bad, it just didnt feel like gears.
  • I consider myself to be a hardcore gears fan & to me gears was all about the story and the detail & depth of the characters and world they inhabitated. I desperatley want another gears game but feel without the locusts it wouldn't be gears & how do u return/revisit them without it being shite? I dont have a clue, but the human vs human in mp was the major fail for me in judgement along with the the strangest decision to leave out horde. In my opinion the only way i can see it going is into the pendulum wars before e-day.........no thanks. The locusts are beasts and could take so many forms black tusk.....take ur time.
  • Gears was one of my favourite franchises on 360, however Judgement was a piece of garbage that I regret paying for. I would've easily passed on this if a different studio wasn't developing, but now I'll give it a chance. Just one chance, if this game is bad then I'm done with the franchise.
  • DO you reuse a condom when your finished? GOW is finished. done done done.
  • As far as the story goes, the next Gears needs to ret-con Judgment and go back to the original story from the trilogy and the books. They should even get Karen Traviss back on board to help write the story.
