Microsoft has quietly brought an end to its US-only $99 Xbox 360 offer, in which consumers could pay an initial outlay before paying a monthly fee to make up the cost of the console. According to MS, the pilot scheme was intended as an experiment.
"This program was intended to be a pilot from the start, and Microsoft routinely adjusts the mix of offers available to its customers and this change was simply standard business practice," Microsoft's David Dennis told the Wall Street Journal.
Originally launched in May 2012, the offer enabled customers to purchase a 4Gb Xbox 360 bundle with Kinect for $99, followed by a monthly fee of $15 over a two-year contractual subscription period. The cost also included membership to Xbox Live Gold. It was thought at the time that business model could also be adopted by Microsoft for Xbox One.
We're assuming that will no longer be the case.
