Mortal Kombat will be reaching its tenth main instalment with Mortal Kombat X next year, but after all that time (over 20 years), is the series running low on ideas? On the basis of our first hands-on with the game during E3, MK is showing no signs of slowing down, wheeling out even more extreme brutality than ever before.

It's the only time we've sat through a game presentation in which a character's face is sliced off and their brain falls out, causing the audience to erupt into rapturous applause. No other game has that same kind of impact as Mortal Kombat. But it's not all about gore. MK X will have more new characters than ever before and it'll be more varied and complex, with three distinct character types to choose from for each kombatant.

Co-creator and Creative Director, Ed Boon reveals all of this and much more in our E3 video interview below. NetherRealm seems to be going big for Mortal Kombat X, and it'll be koming to Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS4 and PS3 in 2015.

  • InB4 retards try to correct the "koming" in the last sentence. OT: I really can't wait for this game. I thoroughly enjoyed Injustice, but it still felt lacking. I really hope they improve on this one over MK9 and I:GOU.
  • Awesome
  • Hope they don't put in annoying achievements like the previous installment.
  • #3, As long as there's no "Win XX ranked matches in a row", I'm fine.
  • MK9 was amazing so i highly expect this to be one of the best fighting games to date. Killer Instinct is very enjoyable but without the fatalities/gore that MK brings to the table its one rung lower on the ladder for me.
  • @4 No "Master all characters" as well.
  • It would be cool if they put in Predator as a guest character in MK10 I can already think of like 5 fatalities he could do with his weapons. Laser Cannon, Head Removal, Spinning Blade, Alien Acid (he removes an Aliens head) and something with that metal pole he uses. He'd be sick! :)
  • I'd like Batman as a guest character, they had Skorpion in Injustice so it only seems fair that Batman is in this. Of course he wouldn't perform any fatalities though.
  • @8 Batman doesn't kill anyone so he won't be a guest character. Predator would be a better option...
  • I think the best option for a guest character on the X1 version would be someone from Killer Instinct.
  • Comment #6 Amen to that.
  • I can't wait for this game to be released. The last game in the series I played/enjoyed was MK Trilogy on PS1. My biggest concern for the upcoming game, is that I hope they don't decrease the amount of blood and gore. That was one of the things I enjoyed in the MK series, besides the various fatalities. Its bad enough other game series numb down on blood and gore...*cough* COD *cough* Wish they kept it the same level with World at War.
  • @9 predator would be cool or even alien.
  • Raiden (MGS) would be interesting. After Rising we know he's no stranger to lopping a fella's head off XD less than 0% chance, but it would make me chuckle XD
  • #14 Then there would be two characters called Raiden?
  • @4 @6, those are the ones I'm talking about. Actually got the MK vs DC 25 in a row one though.
  • @15 well, MGS is Ride-N, MK is Ray-den.
  • BTW does it bug anybody else that they always push Scorpion when they market MK games? He's not even in my top 5 favorite MK characters.
  • @18 Noone cares who your favorite 5 are. He's iconic therefore he's the face
  • #12, The last one you played/enjoyed was the PS1 version of MKT? The blood/gore has been amped up exponentially since then. Have you played MK9? If not, you should give it a try. 18, They're gonna continue to shill Scorpion. He's the official mascot for Netherrealms Games. Also, because he can't "die" (again) in story mode, they'll keep bringing him back. I just hope Taven & Daegon stay as far away as possible.
  • @18 He's Boon's favorite character. Everyone expects Scorp to be the front man. I mean he's even the logo for Netherealm Studios. We shall see much more of Scorp before the game is out. It's something you just kinda have to get used to haha
  • @18 lol your top 5 is irrelevant to the creators also the juggle system they are using is a evolution of Injustice less float but if you connect you basically lock the character in place a bit with your attacks I guess I have to start playing Injustice again just to get that down packed
  • MAY CONTAIN MK9 SPOILERS Well, for returning, Noob is a possibility, we know Scorpion survives, the new Sub Zero is someone entirely new. Raiden is a pretty solid guess, as is Cage ans Sonya, but the fact Cassie is there kinda makes that less likely, plus the fact they'd be around 50 now. Villains not many died so we can expect some I'd say. Non MK9 Characters however. Shujinko, Hotaru and Li Mei are all from that aproximate time so are plausible. I estimate MKX to be around Deceptions latter quarter, as that story takes place over around 45 years, the MK tournament half way approx, so maybe Onaga is alive at this point. Blaze would also be free from guarding the egg. It's quite close to Armageddon happening again. But MKs story is a very strange one, seeing as Bo Rai Cho seems to be around 100 and not age a day. I'd say mostly new characters, maybe 1/4th or 1/3rd returning, one or two guest characters, and possibly a zombie Liu Kang cause let's face it. When he wasn't in Deadly Alliance, people were pissed.
  • I don't understand all of the negative backlash on these "Fatalities." It looks like a normal family reunion for me each year.
