Elite: Dangerous - Frontier's space-faring sandbox - could one day make its way to consoles following a launch on PC and Mac. That's according to Frontier boss and Elite godhead, David Braben. "We would be stupid not to", he stated when asked about the prospect of Elite: Dangerous for consoles.
"I've just got to watch out," he said during an interview conducted at Develop in Brighton last week.. "I don't want to do something that constitutes an announcement, but we would be stupid not to support other platforms, including console."
Braben also observed that Elite: Dangerous is being developed using the same engine the studio used for its Xbox One launch title Zoo Tycoon. "We've done lots and lots of games over time," he added. "We've done first-party Sony games. We've done first party Microsoft games. On console. So yes, we'd be stupid not to think about it."
First, however, Braben and his team are focused on delivering a PC game, before moving to Mac. Only then will Frontier look at other platforms. "We're a public company and announcements have to be properly made. But it's obviously something we're bearing in mind."
Braben went on to say that both Xbox One and PS4 will be able to handle Frontier Developments' vision for Elite: Dangerous just fine. "One of the beauties with console is we can then hand tune it to be just right," he said.
Should Elite: Dangerous make its way to Xbox One and PS4, a release sometime in 2015 seems likely.
