Activision and Bungie have today confirmed the player numbers for the Destiny beta, through which the developer gathered vital data to refine the game as it edges ever-closer to its impending September launch. Commencing on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 on July 17th and closing on the evening of Sunday, July 27th, the beta attracted over 4.6 million players.

To be precise, the Destiny beta saw 4,638,937 unique players taking part, making it the largest ever beta for a new game IP and the biggest beta to date for this console generation, according to Activision.

“This is the biggest beta of this console generation by a wide margin and the largest console beta ever for a new video game IP to date,” said Activision CEO, Eric Hirshberg. “Hosting a beta at this scale is an incredible feat, so we’re thrilled to see the phenomenal response. But the beta is just a taste of what’s to come. We’re counting down the days to our launch day, September 9th.”

Bungie COO Pete Parsons added: “We were totally blown away by the number of people who played the beta. We surpassed even our own goals and the feedback was invaluable. We cannot thank the community enough, the response was humbling and in the weeks ahead we’ll be working hard to ensure that Destiny lives up to the expectations at launch.”

Destiny will be releasing for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3 and PS4 on September 9th.

  • And I wasn't one of them
  • Great game. Can't wait till September. Hope they put in a trade ability though.
  • Impressive but still this game isn't being marketed as a new IP. It's always "From the creators of Halo" and "the producers of call of duty" so I'm sure throwing those names around helped it a ton. If they didn't do that then It wouldnt have been nearly that number.
  • Can't wait for 9/9. Going to be playing next month's GwG to keep be busy for August, and maybe finish up Reach and ODST since I haven't completed them yet.
  • I'm sure this'll do wonders for Activision's ego. I'm sure in the weeks to come will hear about all these new records they've supposidly broken.
  • How many betas have there been for a new ip on this generation console?
  • #3: Generally marketing and every games news outlet droning on about always helps too. Anyway I wasn't a fan. It wasn't terrible, but it could have been a whole bunch more exciting.
  • Great fame, will certainly be clearing my backlog for this
  • @6 That's what I was thinking too. The numbers are still really impressive and everything but calling it "the biggest beta of this console generation" doesn't really seem like that big of a deal when the current generation has only been around for eight months. Destiny has been the only beta so far hasn't it?
  • And i wasn't one of them either piece of shite by shittest developer ever.
  • some down voting going off here
  • @9, titanfall
  • @6 and 9 I know Titanfall had a beta. Can't remember if anything else had a beta.
  • @13 that's the only open betas I can think of. There were some closed betas but obviously they won't hit these numbers
  • @9 Didn't Titanfall have a beta on the One? It's the only other new IP that I can think of that might have had one but of course, it's an Xbox exclusive, no chance in getting the figures like a multi platform game. I say new IP as well because I'd reckon more people would want to beta a new IP than a sequel to a previous game.
  • @11 Yeah, happened in another Destiny thread too. Seems that someone who doesn't like the game has created multiple accounts under the mistaken impression that people give a crap about being downvoted.
  • Who is downvoting everything? Immature.
  • Not trolling but am i the only one that didn't like this? It was nothing special (after all the hype it gets)
  • @17 it was more than likely the same sad person who took the time to click 1 post wait for the page to refresh , click the next post, wait etc. etc..... and red thumb in 5...4...3...2.. :D
  • @3 they didn't create Halo they developed it Microsoft created Halo, noobs these days. Destiny is an amazing game and piece of art love it can't wait till Sept.
  • Can't you tell it's the summer holidays nearly every post gettin down voted. OT really liked the Beta lets hope it's a sign of things to come
  • Just think how much money they would have made if they released the game it this dry summer
  • I want to know what the numbers looked like before they made it an open beta.
  • I was one of those people and I thought it was a really fun game. Even tho I didnt get to put as much time in it as I wanted to.
  • Message me on Xbox Live if you have fun custom games/maps for Halo 3, 4, or Reach. Playing Destiny got me in a Halo mood and I'm sure that'll be the best way to hold me over until September 9th.
  • @20 Uh no
  • @20 No they did create Halo. Microsoft bought it from them and made them turn it into an FPS for console. It originally was gonna be an RTS for Linux I think.
  • I not surprise its a massively hyped game and bungie's first project since halo! I really enjoyed the beta, wasn't all that fussed about destiny but its pre ordered now!
  • @20 seriously? You think Microsoft created Halo and not Bungie? Bungie created halo and originally it was going to be something similar to Halo wars and exclusive to the MAC until Microsoft bought Bungie and take it as the flagship game for the Xbox.
  • As to the article itself, that's pretty impressive and the game is damned good. I really dislike the idea of persistant-online games as much of my gaming is done while I'm offline and the idea of not being able to play a game I own while offline is just disgusting. I was actually gonna completely ignore Destiny and not get it.... till this weekends beta... I actually forgot it was always-online when I downloaded it and after playing the beta and absolutely loving this game that feels less like halo than a merging of Crysis and Mass effect 3's firefight mode... well I pre-ordered the game and will play the hell out of it even with the online-only restriction and resent such BS even more whenever I'm offline XD
  • They don't mention it in the article but is that 4.6 million between all 4 consoles? Also it would be interesting to know how many were in the closed beta compared to the open beta.
  • Didn't care for it either, it's basically just another Borderlands game. There are already two of those out there and a third on the way. So if you simply just can't get enough Borderlands then this game is for you.
  • @20, Um no...as other people have stated Halo was going to be a Mac only title until MS bought it to be an Xbox seller.
  • I really enjoyed the beta. Hands down the best beta i playef as by no lag, framerate issues & others online generally wanted to help each other out. Cant wait for the 9th September. Was on my buy list already, but now its a pre-order.
  • @20 You just went full retard.
  • How is it just Playstation news? The beta was on Xbox too! The article is about Activision and Bungie crowing over how many people played the beta.
  • @39 You're reading it wrong. The stat included both Sony and Microsoft gamers.
  • @18 no, it's not just you. I was completely underwhlemed by this game. It was pretty and worked well functionally, but noting about the narritive or gameplay grabbed me. And the dickheads running around The Tower killed the immersion in the narrative. I've got it pre-ordered, but I'm actually thinking of walking away from the $5 and buying the game on the cheap in a couple of years.
  • The beta was offically started on 7/17 on playstation then xbox got access on7/23 dumbass. Do research before talking you ignorant SOB! DESTINY ROCKS!
  • im not that good or happy with shooters but i must say that i really enjoyed playing the story in co-op.
  • @39 I did read the article. The only reason why they mentioned Playstation was because they were stating when the Beta started, which was earlier on Playstation platforms, and when it finished. Whilst they don't specifically mention Xbox, they add that it's "the biggest beta to date for this console generation, according to Activision." Last time I heard, this console Generation includes both PS4 AND Xbox One.
  • A lot of people compare this game to Halo, Crysis, Mass Effect, and Borderlands; but I just don't see it. This reminds me of a console based SWTOR (Star Wars The Old Republic).
  • That's not good seeing as how the budget was 500 million, if all the beta players bought a 60 copy they'd barely recover half the budget
  • @47 your wrong, theres the 99$ and 150$ versions aswell...and dont for get about the 35$. there gonna make that money back fast...forsure on the playstation side cuz they really dont have games lol...
