Could 2016's Assassin's Creed Be Heading to Japan?

Feudal Japan has been high on a lot of Assassin's Creed fans' wish lists for a long time now, and with the next game seemingly heading to Victorian London, it looks like it could be a long wait before we head to the Land of the Rising Sun. Or could it? Assassin's Creed could be making its way to Japan next year.

That's if clues planted in the Piggyback Assassin's Creed: Unity: Official Guidebook, 2013's Official Piggyback guide for Black Flag, The Art of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and the Abstergo Entertainment Employee Handbook are anything to go by.

A piece of art featured in the books, taken from the game's present day Abstergo lobby depict images from almost all of the Assassin's Creed games so far on a giant flatscreen in the background. The image shows the Middle-Eastern churches of the first Assassin's Creed, Santa Maria del Fiore from Assassin's Creed II's Florence, a tropical island from Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Notre Dame in Paris from Assassin's Creed: Unity and the Houses of Parliament in London from the upcoming Assassin's Creed: Victory.

And finally, there's an image of what looks to be Sensoji Temple in Japan, which could well be pointing to the location for 2016's Assassin's Creed game. It seems like an awfully big coincidence otherwise. Despite the image originating from 2013, it's predicted both 2014 and 2015's AC titles. Surely Japan is on the cards for Assassin's Creed 2016... Right?

  • Why don't we just slow down for a bit and make a game that works completely once every 2 years instead of one that half works every year
  • Where is the Ron Paul gif of 'Its happening!'
  • And what about "Jazz Age Junkies" and "Hell in Hibernia", seen at the start of AC: Unity? I would love those.
  • The need to stop , take a breath and work out were the over all story is heading regards modern day because if unity is anything to go by even the devs don't seem to know.
  • Surely you can't do anymore with this game. I mean come on how many more era's do they want to explore????
  • ugh
  • I love the idea of going to Japan, but like #1 says, if their games are going to be as buggy as Unity, maybe they should change to producing a game every other year.
  • I would love going to Japan and exploring that part of history. I really don't mind where it goes next though, cause I know I will enjoy it no matter what.
  • And hopefully they will use Japanese actors to give them realistic accents. It just seemed dumb to have English actors as French people. Proper accents worked fine in the Ezio trilogy, I don't know why they would change it.
  • Coming from a die hard fan of all the Assassin's Creed games I to say they need to slow down after unity they fucked this game big time with gameplay and bugs I knew I would be let down with any creed game after playing black flag but never did I think I would be this let down.
  • @5 I would settle for all of them just not at the speed and laziness they have going at the moment.
  • Where's the stone age???
  • @5 Don't be ridiculous! There are centuries upon centuries of eras in different cultures. There are enough historical events to last hundreds of AC games
  • Someone needs to take away the atlas and give out 'programming for dummies'
  • Dear Ubisoft, This idea you "just had" to go to Japan, is 5 years too late. Sincerely, Everyone who has been asking for this since AC2.
  • Yes, Japan! This is probably the first time I've wanted to play an AC since Brotherhood.
  • Given the events of the Embers short film that boxed off the Ezio story, it's hardly a huge surprise.
  • Japan would be awesome.
  • Playing as a Ninja Assassin infiltrating palaces at night avoiding detection and traps would be awesome, but does that temple look more like one in China than in Japan? Anyway, Ubisoft, if you give us a full 3D game in Japan but only a 2.5D Chronicles: China, please explain.
  • Does anyone care anymore? It'll just be a cosmetic and skin change. Give it a rest Ubi
  • Of course AC will eventually go to Japan, why would they not? I bet that when they do, the story will be tied somehow with the 47 ronins story.
  • What about Assassins Creed 3? Did the artwork not display anything for Assassins Creed 3?
  • ubisoft why...
  • I sure would love Japan or Egypt. But maybe Egypt is better for a prince of Persia game.
  • Of course that could also be something to do with AC Chronicles China. That building could just as easily be part of the Forbidden City in Beijing
  • I have always maintained that the best news you can post to a website is wild speculation. Or, wait. Hold on a moments. No, I'm sorry, that's wrong. I have always maintained that the WORST news you can post is wild speculation. There we go. Seriously, cut this shit out. Nobody cares about your opinions. Fucking clickbait articles.
  • Too bad they already said a Japan would be to common and boring in terms of setting and gameplay so they won't be going their. It's probably chronicles china
  • I thought I'd read somewhere they were thinking of Victorian era England.
  • @29 that's this years one.
  • personally i always wanted a victorian london one and seen as thats in the pipeline already im good. japan should/would/could be decent though. :)
  • Finally left the Euro centric bubble and they go to the one non Euro place that has a billion games about every period. I can play as a ninja in so many other games. Why not ancient China, or the Ethiopian empire, or India? I will chalk this one up to Weeaboos.
  • Yes, feudal Japanwith it's crowded streets and lots of buildings to climb around on..... Oh wait Remember how much ac3 sucked, and how no one liked running around the forest ? Guess not
  • At the end of the Dead Kings DLC in Assassins Creed Unity Arno said that the artifact he found would be sent off to Cairo, Egypt. Maybe this could mean something or maybe it's just another name and place, who knows.
  • They are probably opening up the possibility of an AC game in Egypt for 2017. Japan would be nice, I have a feeling Chronicles: China won't quite scratch the itch people have for an Asia-based AC game.
  • @34 thanks for the spoiler haven't played the dlc yet... It be nice if I was maybe surprised by how it ends... Think before posting your comments asshole. Totally pissed now.
  • I was a big AC fan. I got AC shortly after I got my 360. I got AC2 on release. I got Brotherhood on release. I got Revelations shortly after it's release due to being poor at the time. I know these games (well, perhaps not Unity given what I read about Ubisoft's stock prices etc) make them a lot of money. And generally, they are quite good games. But yearly releases are really taking their toll. I haven't bought an AC since 3 (which was terribly paced and had a 4 chapter story surrounded by a whole bunch of boring, almost irrelevant crap imo). Almost every yearly release game I've now gotten bored of. And it's not that they aren't good, it's just fatigue. Give the series a little time off, then bring it back in 3-5 years and people will probably lap it up. Anyway - I'd potentially buy an AC game set in Japan. But, more likely, I'll buy it in a few years when the price has dropped a lot.
  • @1 LOL so true! Although AC in Japan is something Ive been waiting for since the series started! I want a trilogy story set in Japan though! (Tenchu Reborn!!:) But Victorian London does sound awesome too, so one at a time and hopefully 2015 and 2017. Clearly need more polishing time with their games, rather than cramming them through the door!
  • People saying they should make a game once every 2 years instead of 1 and the games will be better well perhaps there is some truth to this but you just know this ain't gonna happen period. Gaming isn't just making games to get good review scores and to give fan bases what they want. Gaming industry is a business as long as the industry leaders such as Battlefield and COD even Halo are releasing games on this quick of pace then the fact that AC releases each year won't change any time soon... But these games get more time in development then people think I read somewhere that each game in the AC series gets a 3 year development minimum like AC 3 was being development when AC 2 was close to release date and AC Unity was being development after AC Revelations released. With the exception of AC Rogue which began development in early 2014 and released in November of 2014 they all get 3 year development. So while these games may not always be great they are a hell of a lot better than some of these other regular release games... Sure as hell beats COD for sure...
  • And also Victorian London and Feudal Japan sound great. The ones I personally want are American Civil War, Wild West AC game, World War 1, World War 2 & maybe The Boer Wars...
