Dragon Age Lead Writer Moves on to New BioWare Game

The lead writer of the Dragon Age series - including all of the expansions and a number of novels and the comics - is leaving the series behind to work on a new project at BioWare.

David Gaider tweeted the news yesterday, saying, "So a bit of news: I have decided leave Dragon Age and move onto a new, upcoming BioWare project (which I can't discuss)." He later added, "While it's hard to leave Dragon Age behind, 10 years is a long time to work on any one project. I decided it was time for something new."

Replacing Gaider as lead writer on Dragon Age is Patrick Weekes, who has previously worked on various Dragon Age and Mass Effect games. Among other things Weekes wrote the Rannoch and Tuchanka story arcs of Mass Effect 3  and the Here Lies the Abyss quest in Dragon Age: Inquisition. He also also written the novel Dragon Age: The Masked Empire and the comic Mass Effect: Homeworlds #2.

"I'm honored to be continuing the Dragon Age story that @davidgaider set in motion," tweeted Weekes, "and I look forward to adding a lot of sexy unicorns now." Gaider added, "I am happy, however, to leave Dragon Age in good hands: @PatrickWeekes will be Lead Writer once I'm gone. I can't think of anyone better."

What is David Gaider working on? Well, we don't know, but we can speculate. It's presumably not the new Mass Effect game, or Gaider would have been free to mention it. It's certainly not the PC MMO Shadow Realms because that's been cancelled and we'd be surprised if he was going to create extra story content for Star Wars The Old Republic.

All of which leaves the possibility that Gaider's working on a brand new franchise, which probably means we'll have to wait like three years to find out? Oof.

  • So does this mean no major DLC? :(
  • @1 they've been working on it for awhile on launch day they said they needed more time so it's coming
  • His choices are either the new IP that wasn't Shadow Realms or the Star wars game that's not TOR.
  • Hopefully whatever he's writing has some continuity and dead characters don't magically come back to life just because he feels like it.
  • KOTOR 3! I wish :(
  • The guy in the middle wishes he was the guy on his right but really plays with the thing on his left.
  • What are you referring to #4?
  • I like the way Gaider creates characters, specifically their sexual orientation. He doesn't create homosexual characters out of some agenda or to meet a quota like so many tv shows or movies(which have a random gay character shoehorned at some point). He creates the character first, and then he and his team decide what story fits best. This is why I think he creates great characters.
  • Here Lies the Abyss was probably my favorite quest in Dragon Age: Inquisition so here's hoping the new writer can make big things happen in the future of DA's story, be it the next game or DLC.
  • @7 I'm not freshbreadstick, but you can kill Leliana in Origins, and she still shows up in 2 and in Inquisition. (This is just the one example I know of, there could be others)
  • @10 & @4 If you listen to Leliana in DA:I, she tells you why shes alive and explains it very clearly. So yeah, you just need to listen to her.
  • Weekes wrote the dialogue for Iron Bull, Solas and Cole in DA:I plus Jack, Mordin, Kasumi and Tali in ME2 and ME3, so I'm pretty sure Dragon Age is in safe hands, at least from a character perspective
  • Can't wait to see what he does next!
