The lead writer of the Dragon Age series - including all of the expansions and a number of novels and the comics - is leaving the series behind to work on a new project at BioWare.
David Gaider tweeted the news yesterday, saying, "So a bit of news: I have decided leave Dragon Age and move onto a new, upcoming BioWare project (which I can't discuss)." He later added, "While it's hard to leave Dragon Age behind, 10 years is a long time to work on any one project. I decided it was time for something new."
Replacing Gaider as lead writer on Dragon Age is Patrick Weekes, who has previously worked on various Dragon Age and Mass Effect games. Among other things Weekes wrote the Rannoch and Tuchanka story arcs of Mass Effect 3 and the Here Lies the Abyss quest in Dragon Age: Inquisition. He also also written the novel Dragon Age: The Masked Empire and the comic Mass Effect: Homeworlds #2.
"I'm honored to be continuing the Dragon Age story that @davidgaider set in motion," tweeted Weekes, "and I look forward to adding a lot of sexy unicorns now." Gaider added, "I am happy, however, to leave Dragon Age in good hands: @PatrickWeekes will be Lead Writer once I'm gone. I can't think of anyone better."
What is David Gaider working on? Well, we don't know, but we can speculate. It's presumably not the new Mass Effect game, or Gaider would have been free to mention it. It's certainly not the PC MMO Shadow Realms because that's been cancelled and we'd be surprised if he was going to create extra story content for Star Wars The Old Republic.
All of which leaves the possibility that Gaider's working on a brand new franchise, which probably means we'll have to wait like three years to find out? Oof.
