Treyarch has always had a bit of a soft spot when it comes to customisation. Black Ops' 32-layer emblem editor, for instance, allowed players to create some impressive designs, to show off to all their friends (and enemies) when they took to the online arenas.
With Black Ops 3, Treyarch is taking that to the next level, with the ability to customise guns to an insane degree with Gunsmith (not to be confused with Ghost Recon’s Gunsmith) and also the ability to customise their Safe Houses in the single-player. Without further ado, let us explain more.
Safe Houses
Your Safe House in Black Ops 3 is effectively your single-player hub. It’s an area which players can customise, show off their medals and achievements, and also gain access to the game’s Wiki to get more information about the backstory, should they so choose.
This isn’t just your space though, it’s a space your co-op buddies can visit too. It’s also a place where you and your co-op buddies can discuss tactics, lend each other weapons and so forth, in preparation for the next level. It’s your hub for all things relating to Black Ops 3’s campaign, a campaign which will have its very own progression system, just like the Zombies mode and the multiplayer mode we’ve already talked about.
Gunsmith
Lastly on today’s agenda, but by no means least, is Black Ops 3’s Gunsmith editor, which allows players to create weapon variants for their very own use. In the example that Treyarch used, they took the existing Man-O-War gun, renamed it Vision, then went to town on it.
That meant that they added their own optic and their own attachments (like barrels, clips, mags, adjustable stocks, suppressors, each with different variants) to make their gun visually unique. Big whoop, right? That’s been done before. On top of that though, players can create their own custom paint jobs, just like the emblem system in the original Black Ops.
This hugely detailed editor has 64 layers (whereas the emblem editor only had 32) and also boasts precision editing controls, allowing players to add custom paintjobs to three sides of their weapon, each of which can be unique. In the example Treyarch had prepared, they created their own Vision gun with impressively created Treyarch logos on it and a fire burst design to complement it.
The system also features material support and camos as well, both of which are meant to complement the custom paint jobs, not replace them.
Of course, these aren’t the only customisable aspects of Black Ops 3, as players will have chance to customise their online and campaign avatars, but this is a nice start.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 is scheduled for a worldwide release on November 6th 2015.
