Rockstar Games has now shipped a ridonkulous 14 million copies of its 2010 open-world western, Red Dead Redemption.

Take-Two revealed the stat earlier this week in a “shareholder outreach” document filed with the United States Government. One million copies of Red Dead Redemption have been shipped since 2012.

Also included in the document is a statement that Red Dead Redemption "rejuvenated the western entertainment genre" and that the game’s zombie DLC Undead Nightmare was "commercially successful."

Sooo… how about a sequel, eh Rockstar?

  • I'd like to think those kind of numbers warrant a sequel. So make it happen Rockstar!
  • Looking forward to this and halo reach for backwards compatibility. If you haven't played RDR pick it up, it's awesome.
  • "Red Dead Redemption Ships 14 Million Copies Worldwide - Which is a lot." Unless you're Square Enix.
  • #2 i read somewhere that Take Two aren't doing the backward compatibility, so I don't think it will be unfortunately
  • Usually when the thing are brought up in a shareholders meeting its to convince people that another fame in the series would be a good thing. So, as its been rumored for a while now, I think we can expect another red dead game.
  • If they don't make this backwards compatible it will be a shame......but I am keeping my 360 so I will be good either way. I would rather see a hi-Def remake/sequel.
  • My favourite game from last gen, really can't wait for a sequel, & would rather it be sooner than later that we get our grubby mits on it!
  • Jesus it's been 5 years already????
  • @6 What is the point in remaking a game from last gen, especially when it still looks amazing? I never understand people like this. Why waste development time on something we can already buy & play? We don't want this generation to be the generation of remakes, it's already happening WAYYYY too much.
  • #4 it looks a bit weird with Take 2, 2K games which is a subsidiary of Take 2 are on the backwards compatibility supporters list. So it would be strange for them to bring their 2K published titles to BC but not their Rocester games.
  • How Black Ops II has more votes for backwards compatibility than this I'll never know!
  • @10 yeah it looks strange that way. @11 it's sold way more copies than rdr...years ago...that's why
  • @11 Don't get me wrong, rdr is by far the superior game
  • I think ots obvious that all the big hit games and triple a titles are going to be backwards compatible
  • @10 if anything I would've thought that rockstar would be the ones to support BC rather than 2k @11&12/13 Also I'd say that the thing witH RDR versus Black Ops 2 is that with blops you pick it up and keep playing it on your Xbox one if it gets BC where as with red dead its for the people that want to pick it up and either re visit or they kisse out on it. All this said out of the two I'd think RDR is mor likely to get BC seeing as giving a call of duty BC has potential to hurt the sales of new releases
  • @1 They started working on red dead 3 ages ago. Hopefully it releases the end of next year at the latest.
  • Anybody else feel this article is an anti-climax and reading "red dead" in the title?
  • I bought 2 of those :D Standard and GOTY. The game was amazing fun to play, as well as being a true work of art. The game should have been given a BAFTA. Awesome voice over work from all, and a very good story to boot.
  • I didn't like RDR, but thats a healthy amount of sales. Congrats to them.
  • So confirmed RDR for backwards compatibility lol
  • These are "shipped" numbers. What are the actual "sold-in" figures? People see "shipped" and automatically assume that means "sold", which is incorrect. Shipped means product purchaed by retailers....sold-in means units moved from the retailer to a consumers home, which is way more important. So yeah, its nice that they shipped 14 mill, but out of those 14 mill, I'm curious how many actually were sold to customers.
  • @21 retailers wouldn't buy huge amounts if they weren't selling, it's be a waste of profit. I'd say a very, very high percentage of that number has been games sold.
  • yet they still wont port it to PC, feels bad
  • #22 oh for sure, I'm sure the number sold-in to consumers is equally as astronomical. I just wonder why at these shareholder report meetings why they only talk about "shipped" numbers. Sony did the same thing in June in regards to number of PS4s sold. I suppose its because 14 million sounds better than 8-9 million?
  • why not port it to pc now ?
  • Sorry was any of you doubting the 14million figure at the share holder meeting, or even bother to click the link that Lee actually provided in green, go on try it, do some research, as it states in said document "red dead redemption has SOLD IN more than 14 million units"
  • Why the hell would the government be interested in open world western video game sales figures? 0_o
  • So how 'bout fixing the goddamn servers then? R* will never make another game as great as Red Dead Redemption. Not even the sequel, if they can ever figure out where to go with it.
  • @1 What makes you think they're not making it already? They like to take their time with games and release more quality games; which I'm perfectly fine with, especially if it means another amazing game in the series. Remember, Rockstar are not Ubisoft and Activision. Other companies need to look at Rockstar and Bethesda as examples in how to make games that people will play for years.
  • I may try to finish this game again. I'm not trolling, but I've never been able to finish this game. Started it three times and it bored the shit out of me. After an hour or two playing it, my mind drifts to all of the other games I would rather be playing. So far, I don’t understand the love this game gets, but to each his own.
  • @24 because shareholders only care about 'shipped' numbers. RS has already made their money selling copies to retailers. They aren't the ones taking the hit for copies unsold to consumers.
  • I was about to post how I'd never heard of anyone not liking RDR, and there you are #30. Good timing. Personally, I think it was one of the best games of last gen.
  • Big developer sells a big game a bunch.
  • @ #26 Okay calm down, kiddo.
  • #26 for the purposes of this document, they refer to sold-in as sold-in to retailers, since that's all the shareholders care about. That is NOT the same as sold-in to consumers. GTA has sold-in 54 million units to retailers (aka shipped), but actual sold-in units to consumers is somewhere around 40-55 million I'd wager.
  • Look to all who seem to think I am not calm, I am just stating what the "actual" article ststes, I have zero idea on what shareholders, ship in, shipped to really means, but it does state "shipped in"....peace and love
  • Single player good co-op is good there is 2 things that ruined the game for me pvp and the stupid dlc where they force you to play card games for achieves if they drop those from a Red Dead 2 then I'll buy it if not I am not intrested in Red Dead 2
  • PC release with mod tools please!
  • I guess... I mean I don't know if I would be up for another one though....riding a horse took forever to get from place to place lol
  • Updated or Backwards Compatible please. Plus Sequel!
  • backward compat when?
  • Porkchop sandwiches.
  • Of course they'll put out another Red Dead. They're. Not just gonna put out one of their best-selling games then discontinue the series. With the technology of the new gen consoles they'll be able to do so much with the new game. I'm sure it'll be another game of the year contender.
  • Re-boosh on Xbox One and PS4 would sponduolarific
