Lionsgate is teaming up with Take-Two and Gearbox Software to bring a Borderlands feature film to the big screen, with the renowned producers behind Marvel movies like Iron Man, Spider-Man, X-Men, Ghost Rider and Blade, Avi and Ari Arad on board.

The deal between Lionsgate, Take-Two and Gearbox will see the hit sci-fi FPS' unique brand of humour translated to the silver screen as a "tent-pole feature film". "The Borderlands games don't pull any punches, and we'll make the movie with the same in-your-face attitude that has made the series a blockbuster mega-franchise," said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Co-Chairs Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger.

"We're thrilled to extend our partnership with Jon Feltheimer, Michael Burns, Rob, Patrick and the amazing team at Lionsgate and join forces with Take-Two and Gearbox on this incredible property," said Avi and Ari Arad. "Borderlands has a unique story-driven narrative energy and rich multidimensional characters that position it to become a singular motion picture event."

Since its launch in 2009, the Borderlands series has shipped over 26 million copies, with 8 million shipped in Take-Two's fiscal year 2015. It's perfect movie fodder then, with a built-in audience who lapped up the games.

"Creating, developing and continuing to build the Borderlands franchise at Gearbox Software has been an incredible ride where the most powerful fuel to our engine has been the astonishing outpouring of love and devotion from the fans," said Gearbox President and Co-Founder Randy Pitchford.

"It is the passion of the fans driving the growing success of Borderlands that brought what I believe to be the best team of film producers, marketing and distribution experts in the world together to deliver the exciting story and unique characters of Borderlands to the big screen."

No date has been set for the release of the Borderlands movie as yet. Watch this space.

  • I wouldn't mind seeing Bradly Cooper play Handsome Jack.
  • I'm curious about who tiny Tina would be. I don't know too many young looking actresses that would be able to pull off that role. Maybe Chloe grace moretz or jodelle ferland?
  • Ugggghhhhh why movies based on video games are never good Doom being the prime example
  • Yes, because Borderlands 1 had the best ending in video game history ever!
  • Aw, my "slash sarcasm" didn't show up... wonder why?
  • 0% on rotten tomatoes here we come!
  • At least Borderlands will finally get a story Kappa
  • Will we get a game based on the movie as well?
  • I will watch it in the theatre. Actually kind of excited to see what they can do. Hope they go all out on it with huge explosions, hilarious scenes and a very hot Lilith.
  • @3 no, super mario bros. being the prime example
  • @2 All of the casting will most likely go in the wrong direction and the movie will suck ass and tank. Hollywood has a tendency to cast roles based on name instead of talent.
  • With Avi Arad involved I'd be worried. He's infamous for forcing changes on films and turning them into disasters. Also, I don't think Borderlands can be done justice in a 2 hr. film. I know, the first game barely has a story, but still, not really feeling this.
  • @10 You beat me to it...
  • @12 you're probably right but I still have hopes for it. Honestly with it being a video game movie with borderlands humor I'm surprised it isn't uwe boll making it. I'd personally like to see another movie like postal.
  • Danny DeVito as Salvador!! LOL!!
  • I'm surprised no one has thought to make the Modern Warfare trilogy into a set of movies. Most war movies your thrown into the middle of it, but the MW trilogy has a beginning, middle and end. Decent story which could be made even better with great writers behind it. As for Borderlands. I dunno. Maybe a Manga series or something would work.
  • @2 I could see Maise Williams (i think thats her name, Arya Stark from Game of Thrones anyway) playin Tiny Tina
  • @18 I didn't even think about her lol she has a pretty good sense of humor and is pretty badass so I could see that working
  • whats a "tent pole feature film"? lots of moxxi?
  • Why do we keep playing these games?! They're boring and Randy Pitchford's a dick. They need to check their numbers... 26mil units, divided by 3 games is roughly 8mil consumers. I probably wouldn't see the movie, but for arguments sake let's say I do. Generously adjusting for inflation let's say an avg of $14 per ticket, which brings the gross to 112mil. It'll probably cost 160-200mil to make, so there. Already projected to fail. Hope it puts Gearbox out of business.
  • @1 Jack wouldn't be in it if it's borderlands 1 or a different story on pandora all together. Movies based on games have pretty much all been terrible, can't think of a single good one, I hope to christ this is good.
  • "Creating, developing and continuing to build the Borderlands franchise at Gearbox Software has been an incredible ride where the most powerful fuel to our engine has been the astonishing amount of outsourcing we do and of fleecing the fans whenever possible," said Gearbox President and Co-Founder Randy Pitchman. Fixt that for you. Frankly, I'd be happier to hear you're announcing that you're going to finally drop the price of the BL: TPS season pass on the 360 you money-gouging cocksuckers.
  • Did someone actually think we needed a Borderlands movie?
  • @23 the only ones that I can think of that I liked were doom, resident evil, postal, rampage. But some of those I don't really think followed the game too closely so I don't know if that still counts...
  • It is strange, but I just don't see much of a movie for this game. All I can think of is Mad Max - and that is already done. But you never know, some good writers could make a good story in this 'universe.' There have been a few decent movies from video games - granted they tend to be poor, but Tomb Raider and a few of the Resident Evil movies were pretty good. I also liked the Prince of Persia and it made something like $350 million so that is not to bad.
  • I love Borderlands, but I just have a terrible feeling about this movie. I'm not convinced that the things that make the franchise great will be translatable to a movie. I hope this doesn't torpedo the video games along with it if it fails, and to be honest, it probably will
  • This will be a terrible money grab after lionsgate saw Mad Max's success. Shame really, because if they put some love into it it could be pretty cool.
  • @3 with all the fuck-turrible video game movies you name-drop DOOM? That wasn't even in the bottom 90% of terrible video game movies. Do the words Uwe Boll mean anything to you?
  • A great Borderlands movie is already out its called mad max fury road. This right here will flop
  • Good, bad, I don't care if it flops, I'll still watch it anyway because it's Borderlands and I love it.
  • Well consider this franchise dead.
  • @23 The only video game movie I enjoyed was the very first Mortal Kombat back in the 90s. Although afterwards they did Armageddon and that one was absolutely horrible. Video games just need to stick to making their games good rather then trying to make a movie that will probably end up horrible.
  • @19 There are plenty of bad game movies that haven't torpedoed the game series. Starting with Super Mario Bros. and continuing on up to the present day.
  • This will do bad because 3 out of the 5 marvel movies listed were bad. They just got lucky with the other two. I would have gone with non-fox mavel movie producers.
  • @1 I second this motion. I'm having trouble picturing a Borderlands movie that doesn't seem like a Guardians of the Galaxy clone. It'd be good if they took a similar approach to the Assassin's Creed movie, and just used the lore and setting, with a completely new story and new set of Vault Hunters. I'll remain on the fence for now, until a teaser poster of CL4P-TR4P surfaces.
  • This movie will feature a character not canon to the video game franchise: Milla Jovovich as an unnamed siren. Sean Bean will play as T.K Baha, but he'll die in the first five minutes.
  • Anyone that is excited about this may wish to temper their expectations. Outside of the glorious B movie martial arts cheesiness of the first Mortal Kombat, every video game adaptation has ranged from bad to fucking shocking. Just saying.
  • @40 Silent Hill was epic.
  • @10 Mad Moxxi Fury Road
