The Crew: Wild Run is The Crew Made Bigger and Better

Upon its release last year, The Crew didn't exactly set the world ablaze, even if its concept of open-world MMO racing was one with masses of potential. And while the game failed to live up to the loftiness of its ideas, The Crew: Wild Run is looking to make amends. You know what? It might actually deliver on that promise too.

At its most basic level, the release of Wild Run will also bring with it a free visual upgrade for anyone who already owns The Crew, while actually shelling out for the expansion itself presents you with all of the additional content like monster trucks, motorbikes, drift cars and drag racers. There's also The Summit too, where a crew can get together and engage in a variety of new events that put Wild Run's new vehicles to good use.

A lot of the new stuff in Wild Run is a direct result of observing what the community was doing in the game, the perfect example being players gathering on the wide open salt flats for drag races. “We saw a lot of players going here and just racing. We were just like 'what the heck?' We realised they were there because its the biggest and longest area where you can drive in a straight line,” Producer Stephane Jankowski tells us.

“They just wanted to do 0-100mph and beat times and stuff like that, so we thought we should create some gameplay around this. That's why dragsters were born [in Wild Run]; because of this,” he continues. “Everything that we've put in Wild Run is based upon what we saw from the players and what they wanted to have: new toys, having fun racing, etcetera,”.

Drag racing joins monster trucks and motorcycles in Wild Run too, which means Ivory Tower has had to make tweaks to The Crew's physics engine to cater for vehicles catching air. “Right now in The Crew if you jump, you can't control yourself [in the air] because the physics engine can't handle it,” Jankowski explains. “With monster trucks, we wanted you to be able to jump and do backflips, of course. So we added physics to handle this situation. You'll see this with the monster trucks and the bikes. It's an innovation for us and we put a lot of effort into it.”

Factor in the dynamic weather alongside the hike in visual quality, which in itself includes an enhanced depth of field, and physical based rendering, and The Crew: Wild Run sounds like an enticing prospect. Chuck in the ability to ride monster trucks anywhere you like in the game's open-world USA, and you have a recipe for potential greatness. I mean, c'mon. Backflipping monster trucks.

And anyone who doesn't own the Wild Run DLC can still play with anyone who does, so The Crew's audience won't be divided. You'll simply see the content in your world, but the bevy of new vehicles, challenges and events will be off-limits. It seems that all of the right moves are being made with The Crew: Wild Run then, transforming the game into something that will not only be far more palatable, but quite possibly essential.

The Crew: Wild Run launches on 17th November 2015.
