Red Dead Redemption has joined the growing list of backwards compatible Xbox 360 titles now available on Xbox One, but before you get your game disc out and start trying to install it, note that it's currently only available if you own a digital copy of the game. Bah.

Other backwards compatible titles that have been spotted on Xbox One, but have yet to be officially announced by Microsoft and added to the BC list, include Alan Wake's American Nightmare, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Left 4 Dead 2, Halo Wars, and Tekken Tag Tournament 2.

You can find out how to download some of the games in the video below, courtesy of friend of the site Maka91. However, you'll be doing so at your own risk, since these have yet to be officially rolled out onto the Xbox Games Store. It might be worth waiting a wee while.

  • As much as I loved red dead redemption and I really loved that game I am not sure if I want to taint the memory as games have moved on so much since then.. I would prefer to remember it on the 360 and how amazing it looked at the time If this was a HD remake I would be all over it but as it stands I'll pass nothing bad about the game but so much has changed since
  • Thanks for the mention :)
  • Where's my Tales of Vesperia?
  • Castlevania says unavailable for me at the moment, hope that pops up soon, easily one of my favourite 360 games, never played the original version somehow. Cheers for the pointers!
  • "Insert wheres black ops 1 comment here"
  • Still waiting on Alan Wake, Dead Space, Dark Souls, Enslaved, Castlevania LoS, Mass Effect 2 & 3 (or remaster), Assassin's Creed Brotherhood/Revelations/III, and Tales of Vesperia, and Brutal Legend. Apparently RDR and the other games have also been patched and you can no longer play them.
  • I am not seeing that on my xbox one and I have Alan Wake American Nightmare on my xbox account
  • #1 I think you won't be disappointed as much as you think. Last summer I played RDR for the first time and loved every second of it, to this day it is the only open-world game in which I achieved 100% completion (I did everything except multiplayer and DLC stuff).
  • @6 what? What do you mean patched and can't play?
  • @ it is HD tho, graphics have improved since then obviously tho, better to just wait for the next one which id be surprised if its not announced this year
  • Still waiting for skate 3 :D
  • I'd rather have Castlevania SOTN be a X1 release with new achievements rather than the backwards compatibility.
  • How do the achievements work for backward compatible games? If ai play a game for the first time do the achievements unkock for 360 and the one?
  • @13 All backwards compatible games are the 360 version of the game with the 360 achievement list. There is not a new list for One.
  • I might just have to buy RDR again for this!
  • This doesn't work. When I try to play RDR my console instead launches Hexic.
  • I downloaded red dead redemption and Hexic HD loads up instated
  • Mine wants a patch which doesn't exist.

  • @1 I agree. Most BC games are becoming that way.
  • so do at your own risk as MS stated it violates code of conduct.
  • Alan Wake AN is still working
  • L4D2 but no L4D, or is that out already?
  • RDR's multi-player was littered with hackers last time I played and that was a while ago. Obviously this doesn't matter if you only care about the single-player. #23 First L4D hasn't been released as BC but hopefully they do both.
  • @1 and if it was a hd remake there would be 50+ comments stating that they would rather have had bc..
  • Glad this wasn't official. I'm still waiting for Bioshock.
  • Hopefully it doesn't take forever for disc support because there's no way I'm paying for BC games again if I still have the discs. RDR is $29.99 digital? What?
  • This are now pulled from being downloaded and need updates that can't be downloaded to work.
  • I'm surprised that Microsoft haven't put the all the Xbox exclusive already. But I am excited to play RDR again since my original xbox 360 console can't handle that game anymore.
  • @27 its been multiple times at $7.5, but I understand your point.
  • I know it's sad, but as this is an achievement website, I'm going to post anyway. Really wanted Halo Wars to become BC, as I own two copies and aimed to play multiplayer by myself for the achievements. I only have one Xbox 360, so this is perfect. Still going to wait for it to be official before I bother, though.
  • It's such fucking bullshit that you need to purchase the games again if you owned the physical copies. That NEEDS to be addressed and fixed.
  • @ #32 You must be living under a rock for the last few months. If a game gets officially backwards compatible (which these games are not at the moment), then the disc version you own will work. Only the digital versions worked in that case cause it was a system bug that gave access to those games unofficially.
  • Well that's another 3 that can go on the x1. my 360 is gonna be gathering dust soon
  • Why would you want L4D1? Shit is super inferior to L4D2. Also #1 listens to Linkin Park
  • @35 The hell it is. Left4Dead is one of the best games I ever played for the 360. I can't say the same thing for L4D2. To each their own tho.
  • I hope L4D1 comes out soon. I've always enjoyed that one more than the sequel.
  • @32: What do you mean? As #33 said, the discs are supported too. Are you bitching because you gave away or traded in some of these games over the years? Because that would mean you don't own the game, and they're not going to change the system to just give away more stuff than they already do. Even the Minecraft $5 Xbox One deal was easily exploitable by just borrowing the game and launching it once under your gamertag. There's nothing wrong with the Xbox One backward compatibility system. It's the same as playing on 360 - you either pop in your disc or launch the digital game from dashboard.
  • Never played L4D but would buy it if it became BC and there were others playing. Need to mop up L4D2 soon actually.
  • ugh but i have a disc :(
  • @26. Totally agree. I want BioShock so bad. I could play it on the 360 again but I have a nice pair of gaming headphones and want to experience it in surround sound. The sound and environment is what made that game.
  • @1 ya a HD remake is better delusional you are I don't want remakes I want #BC titles to keep coming you don't like it isn't your choice , others do you miss out and keep waiting for a remake that will never come
  • YAAASSSSSSSSSSSS!
  • this doesnt work anymore, or it never did for me as every game shows up as being "unavailable"
  • How can a game from 2010 be HD remade when it was already released in HD? Gosh you kids are silly these days. Good news though as I think RDR was the most popular game when they announced backwards compatibility. One of the best of last gen if you have yet to play it. :)
  • @45 there are a lot of games that were made in HD on the 360/ps3 but got remastered even past 2010
  • Halo Wars does not work
  • #47 Xbox hasn't officially added them to the Xbox store yet so of course it wont work just yet gotta wait a bit longer
  • I've been out of the backwards compatibility loop for a little while so what's the current status on DLC? There are a lot of games already on the list that have it - World Of Keflings as an early example has an Aliens expansion.. Do they appear to download in the same way or do they have to be queued up via Xbox.com / download history?
  • DLC for BC titles show up in the store. If you've previously purchased DLC, you will be able to install it via the store or via the manage game option.
  • I must be the only person who never liked RDR. Just felt to empty a game world. Plus I never got into the story. Despite making 3 separated purchases over the year to try and get into it. But glad its coming for the legion of fans.
  • Good batch of games
  • Lame that Red Dead is digital only... Very lame. Yay for Halo Wars though.
  • #53, What do you mean? When the game becomes officially BC, you will able to use your disc.
  • Will the servers for Red Dead be reopened !?
  • No idea why #1 got so many down votes, he clearly wants to cherish his experience with it and remember it fondly.
  • The reason we might not be able to use the disc yet for Red Dead Redemption might be because if you have the GOTY Edition, the MultiPlayer and the Undead Nightmare are on a seperate disc. I would like to think they are working on making both Discs Backwards Compatible.
  • The cynic in the thinks they might not release L4D because all the L4D maps went into L4D2 as DLC. I have that DLC though so having L4D2 available on my Xbone is pretty sweet. I love a little bit of L4D2. More games added is always a good thing, though I haven't actually used the BC much on Xbone, other than playing Meat Boy and Banjo Kazooie again.
  • @ 51, your not the only one.
  • @51 I think the emptyness is wanted to a certain extend as it works well with the setting. You being the lone rider riding throught the desert. I still feel the world has quite a lot of variety and remarkable landmarks. But to each their own. @58 I personally haven't really touched L4D since the cold stream DLC and I would probably be fine with only L4D2 being BC but I think once they get L4D2 running for good it wouldn't be too much of a hastle to get the first one running as well. On their individual content I prefer L4D1. Death toll is still my overall favorite campaign. Overall a pretty solid list. They covered quite a few of the most requested games this time. Sure some games I want are still missing but I guess you can't complain on this heap of games.
