Ubisoft has announced that there will be no Assassin’s Creed game in the main series this year, confirming industry rumours that first circulated back in early January.

Speaking in “A Message From the Assassin’s Creed Team” published on the Ubi Blog, the devs said “we… are stepping back and re-examining the Assassin’s Creed franchise. As a result, we’ve decided that there will not be a new Assassin’s Creed game in 2016.”

“Since the release of Assassin’s Creed Unity, we’ve learned a lot based on your feedback,” continued the post. “We’ve also updated our development processes and recommitted to making Assassin’s Creed a premier open-world franchise.”

“We’re taking this year to evolve the game mechanics and to make sure we’re delivering on the promise of Assassin’s Creed offering unique and memorable gameplay experiences that make history everyone’s playground.”

In early January it was rumoured that not only would the main Assassin’s Creed series skip 2016, but it would return in 2017 with an Egypt setting. Codenamed Empire, the game would be the first in a series of three direct sequels, with subsequent entries set in Rome and Greece.

Ubisoft has yet to reveal any details about Assassin’s Creed: Empire.

  • YES. Finally a break even though they released two AC games already this year. But hopefully this AAA title won't suck
  • So they arnt new, can we still expect the Assassin's Creed Collection they bought the domain for earlier this year?
  • Good call from Ubisoft! I think pretty much everyone has been thinking they needed to do this for a few years now, even before Unity. I like the series, but the games simply weren't getting enough time to be as good as they should be. I also think a lot of people were simply getting burnt out with the series too, such were the relentless releases. Personally I think I would have skipped Syndicate if it hadn't been set in London. Looking forward to a more polished AC game in 2017 (or maybe even beyond!)
  • I think its needs more than a year brake personally. And how can they say there is no NEW assassins creed this year?! Have they not recently released chronicles?! The good thing about this news is that the rumoured watch dogs is gona be their big Xmas release this year!
  • I said this in early January, but this series has certainly hit the point of fatigue, and most likely even surpassed it. The best game in the series (inmy opinion,) ACII, had a two year development gap after its predecessor. There is nothing wrong with taking an extra year or two to make new entries in a franchise as good as they should and can be. Just take The Witcher, Batman Arkham, and Deus Ex as examples.
  • Watch dogs 2 even!
  • Maybe we'll revisit Prince of Persia.
  • Assassins Creed Ultimate Collection announced at E3 then
  • Good to hear. Assassins's Creed 1 and 2 were so amazing and fresh back then. Tho AC1 was repetitive. After AC2 they dropped the ball and released just pile of unfinished games. In AC3 there was zero stealth gameplay and half way I just hoped it to end fast. Just wanted my gamerscore. Didn't like AC4 either. Played it maybe one hour. Don't usually pay much attention to graphics but damn that game looks ugly. All in all devs should think over what made AC so damn good in the first place.
  • But there hasn't been a new Assassin's Creed game in years, though.
  • No Assassin's Creed, except two Chronicles, a mobile game, and a movie.
  • @4 They said no new MAIN Assassin's Creed game.
  • Assassins creed syndicate 2 please. Make it a trilogy loved jacob and evie fry.
  • @12 true, there could be a movie tie-in. I'd be very surprised if there wasn't.
  • Thank God. Give it 4 yours then make a new one
  • Someone please show EA this.
  • I'd wait a couple years, start fresh with a new trilogy. Maybe revisit Desmond? Idk but they certainly do need to rethink the animus stuff.
  • Rather have AC than the shit show that was Watch Dogs.
  • This is good news maybe now I can actually catch up on AC. Every time I would play one of them 2 more would come out before I was ready to dig into another one.
  • Good thing. I love the series, but a little break is welcome. It allows everybody to catch up some games. And hopefully they find some good new idead.
  • Good! As someone who is just about finished Clumsy Creed: Syndicate I really hope they go back to being an assassin and not a boxer.
  • A new trilogy in ancient Egypt, Rome, and Greece? And taking a year off to improve everything? This sounds great!
  • they wrote themselves into a hole 3 or 4 games back and my bet is we get a retcon / reboot next time out expecting us to swallow the insult to our intelligence once more ... those predicting a movie tie in won't be far wrong I think.
  • This is the most excited I've ever been for an announcement that a game isn't coming out. This series needs a breather big time, should have probably had one a few years ago.
  • Maybe they will find a plot for the series again, while they are out in the wilderness.
  • This doesn't feel like news.
  • Yeah this feels like the right move. I thought the past story was great up to Rogue everything after not so much. I don't hate Unity the way most people do but nor do I love it, I would say it's mediocre at best. And I really haven't played enough of Syndicate yet to thoroughly judge it but I think at this point it takes more than that to impress us. As for the Present day storyline it's been god awful since Black Flag, hacking computers? Interactive cutscenes? God I remember when people used to make fun of Desmond to no end it's probably those people we have to thank for the sorry state of the modern day section. Oh well this year break might just be exactly what Assassin's Creed needs...
  • Awesome. I stopped buying these games because they were coming out too quickly for me to play properly and the loss of the story (Desmond) to be exact kinda through me off also.
  • Thank god! I need a break from playing the exact same game every year.
