The North American ratings board - the ERSB - has revealed a lot of new Resident Evil 7 details.

The ratings board has since taken the listing down, but luckily we managed to get the details before it was removed.

This post will contain a lot of spoilers, so be careful. We'll put the game's most recent trailer under this sentence, consider that the boundary of spoilers.

Right, now, here we go.

According to the ERSB, you'll be playing as a man named Ethan, who is searching for his wife in a derelict mansion.

You'll be able to use  pistols, shotguns, flamethrowers, explosives and chainsaws to kill not zombies, but 'mutant creatures', as the description puts it. Combat will feature 'realistic gunfire' and 'exaggerated blood-splatter effects', too.

Here's the sort of violence you can expect, too:

"As players progress through the story, cutscenes can depict instances of gore and intense acts of violence. A character's arm dismembered by a chainsaw; a man's leg taken off at the knee with a shovel; a character impaled through the face with a shovel. Some areas also depict mutilated corpses with exposed organs/viscera."

Resident Evil 7 will launch January 24th for Xbox One, PC and PS4/PSVR.

  • everything seems normal then?
  • I can hear the tweens now "mommy we just kill zombies!"
  • looks like im going to pass this time around :( first person twitch shooting is just fine... but if you add exploration and problem solving to first person i really get dizzy :( and resident evil is known for these puzzles
  • I hope the character "Ethan" doesn't have a whiny voice. Please give him a deeper voice for RE7 maybe like Liam O'Brien, Travis Willingham, Etc..
  • @4 I honestly dont care who it is, as long as it isnt Troy Baker or Nolan North.
  • I have a question for you RE diehards. I have only played RE5 in the series. I know a lot of RE players don't like 5. I loved it. That being said I was thinking about getting the 4 remake on the one next week. Knowing that I really enjoyed playing 5, will I like 4? I think I will but so many people have said in other posts how unlike Resident Evil the 5th one was. So I was wondering what you guys think. Cheers
  • resi 4 is very similar to 5. If you like 5 you will like 4, the only thing that may or may not be an issue is controls.
  • Resi 4 is way more suspense than 5 . for me Resi 4 is the best game of the Franchise you have the perfect mix between intense scene , Action , Terror many people dont like the Ashley stuff but I think its fine
  • I looked up Ashley in RE4 and oh man she could be a deal breaker. An AI companion thats 10x worse than Sheva in RE5..... People really hate Ashley from posts online. Most say the second half of the game is unplayable because of her. This is not boding well. Oh well. Saves me $20. Thanks guys.
  • Is this a leak if Capcom is okay with them putting this out?
  • #9 thats bullshit. the amount of time you play as her or protecting her is pretty small compared to the entirety of the game. Its the worst part of the game yes but it also makes the entire thing ten times as suspenseful as when you play as leon, alone. but if you want to miss out on one of the best games of the last couple of decades because of some whiners online then go right ahead
  • 11 Passive aggressive much? I much preferred The Boss Speaks sending a polite message over Xbox Live telling me that the game is worth it. PS because of that nice message I will most likely end up getting it. You couldn't just tell me the good things of the game you had to get uber aggressive, not the best method for convincing someone.
  • @12 the Ashley stuff can get a little tedious, but as least you don't have to worry about her getting in your way and watching you die like Sheva. I played both and I liked both, but I much prefer protecting Ashley than Sheva watching me die! lol
  • @12 No, he's right. If 10% of something is bad, while the other 90% is fantastic, and you base your final judgement on that 10%, than you're a dummy. RE4 is an amazing game, even by today's extremely high standards, and you're gonna pass it up because of a tiny portion of bad gameplay, and one passive-aggressive comment from a random person online?
  • hissingmeat like usual your comment is not good. Did you even read my post? I said I was probably going to get it. Dummy.
  • @15 read it fast, thought it said most likely not end up getting it. That, accompanied with your earlier comment saying you werent getting it. Excuuuuuuuuse me.
  • there was nothing passive aggressive about my post. ill admit it was downright aggressive. re4 happens to be my favorite game of all time so when people pass it up for a really dumb reason like that, then its really their loss i guess. and i could care less whether or not the way i said what i did changes your mind. im not going to sugarcoat it and hold your hand, walk you through all the good things as that would just take wayyyy too long
  • @ Sonnenberg - Get the game, it is definitely worth it. Even the Ashley parts are not as bad as anyone has made it out to be so far. IF by some chance you get frustrated with the few sections of protecting her or playing as her, just find a walkthrough to get past those parts, but I swear it is not that bad at all. @ HissingMeat and RiseofMrBlonde2 - He's going to get the game, but probably not because of your comments. Just be happy he is joining the RE4 family and leave the poor guy/gal alone and move on... Nobody likes the peanut gallery
  • @6,9 resident evil 4 isn't just the best res evil game it's probably one of the best games of all time, as for Ashley if you unlock her bonus costume she's really useful plus you don't actually spend that much time with her only a bit
  • reminds me of resident evil survivor & given that it was the 1st fpv re game released when i was 11 during 2000 way before outlast & pt. vii does take its aspects returing to this format improving upon 16 years later & applying it with some elements todays generation like in horror. i understand fans really did want re vii returning to form with fixed camera angles & tank control mechanics in a modern fashion for yearly generations to adapt with that didnt experience what re was truely like before going over the shoulder. & i ask myself if the outcome wouldve been different if capcom finally did what i shared on the last sentence, & if they did would fans finally be fulfilled saying aww capcom heres a cuddly hug, was that really too hard to ask ;)
  • 17 Apparently you care A LOT. And you sound like a dick. You don't know me. Be polite. Posts like yours are a big problem on this website. "Sugar coat and hold my hand?" Sounds like you're just an angry person in general. 18,19 Thanks guys.
  • @Sonnenberg: RE4 was a matserpiece. I say was, because even if the game is still incredible, it does feel a bit outdated, I'm not gonna lie. RE5 and 6, whether we like them or not, respond well and still look gorgeous for 360 games. RE4 is a bit older and it shows a bit. Gameplay is a bit clunky now, and it's not visually a slap in the face, obviously. That being said, in terms of pure campaign, challenge, and stress (yes, it was pretty scary), it's still an extraordinary game. So, yes, you should definitely get it. It's just a gem that shines a bit less than 10 years ago.
  • anyone who needs to ask about RE4 doesn't deserve to even read a RE related article.
