Leaked Marketing Materials May Have Revealed Call Of Duty: World War II - Report

Call of Duty may be going back to its World War II roots if marketing materials leaked by Youtuber TheFamilyVideoGamers are anything to go by.

The Youtuber uploaded a video on Thursday last week that suggests marketing materials were emailed to him by an anonymous source last week. The materials suggest that the next Call of Duty game will be going back to World War II, a la Battlefield's shift last year back to World War I.

Alongside a poster showing off some art for the rumoured game, there are also four steelbook concepts showing scenes reminiscent of the D-Day landings - the video cycles through all these images. Note that the font is the same from prospective developer Sledgehammer Games' last CoD title, Advanced Warfare.

Whilst the source is unverified and the materials could very well be fake, it's worth noting that Activision noted to its investors in February that the next entry in the series will 'take [the franchise] back to its roots'. The leaked materials seem to support that claim.

It's also interesting to note that last year, both Infinite Warfare and Modern Warfare: Remastered were leaked prior to their official announcement - that was at the same time of year. For reference, Call of Duty games are usually revealed in early May and launch in November.

You can take a look ar the video revealing the materials below:

  • I am all for this. I am tired of crazy future weapons and perks that do the kills for you.
  • This may actually get me back on board
  • I've been waiting for a civil war entry since modern warfare... Is that too much to ask? :'(
  • Didn't they mention this in the last Game Informer?
  • @1 there will always be perks that do the kills for you, it gives the illusion that even casual gamers can play and still have fun
  • This is probably the most creative name they came up with in the history of the franchise. *turns sarcasm off*
  • They should look at the Korean War. WW2 has been done to death.
  • I like that the future CoDs were very grounded in the directions technology is going (for the most part) but holy hell was the execution lousy. I can't say that I'm confident in the franchise any more despite the "roots" rumors
  • Im actually excited for a call of duty! Is this normal? Cant wait to see more!
  • By the time this gets released people will be bored of WW shooters again. This is what people asked for 2 years ago. Then they released more future, jetpack shite. Too late. Time for a revamp of CoD. Give it a rest for a couple year and release something new and innovative.
  • the problem with perks though for all COD games is you need to actually be able to get some kills in a row to get them so if your terrible at these games, its something you never get to use anyway I prefer playing these games just against friends rather than strangers anyway. Use to set up 3 xboxs, 3 tvs in my mates old flat and just the 3 of us, was way more fun, no radar on, sneaking about and actually jumping when you get caught rather than just running round constantly
  • They will figure out some way to twist this into some made up alternate version of WWII where there is mech suits, laser beams, etc.
  • I dont know if it'll work with COD. Though BF1 was set in a very early time period in terms of war technology, they didn't sacrifice much in term of the formula. There still was big af maps, fun vehicles, awesome frostbite graphics, etc. The game was a treat because the Battlefield template still works well in such a "minimalist" context. However COD strayed so far from its roots, the new staples like ridiculous weapon skins, over the top kill streaks, jump and parkour mechanics, and all that shit that's associated with the franchise nowadays won't work well IMO in this setting. So im thinking it wont be relevant to its own core fanbase which is the casual gamer who really don't give a fuck about where COD from.
  • I'd be happy if this was real but it looks completely fake to me.
  • Leaks, leaks, leaks and leaks on top of leaks - this time courtesy of Activision. You need to be mentally retarded in order to believe that stuff like this "leaks", rather than being deliberately released to the public to draw attention to a game, especially an Activision game. Man, am I desperately waiting for a Destiny 2 box-art leak.
  • More boring WW2 stuff oh well i'll get this COD when its under 30$.
  • Funny how after Battlefield have a very successful game after looking backwards Crapivision now want to do the same.
  • @17 both cod and battlefield are constantly copying the other. Neither has any original ideas left. And both are guilty of putting profits first. Which makes for terrible games
  • Yawn not another old war shooter. Probably first call of duty i wont buy. I am bored to death of old war shooters for like 15 years that all there every was. you all whined that call of duty wouldn't change up their game and were tired of it so they listened and went the futuristic way and you all whined again that you didn't like call of duty changing. I think alot of you don't know what you like and no matter what a game does alot of you will just whine and cry.
  • I really hope that's just a work in progress name... given the series has already had games in WW2, it makes little sense to have this game be called just WW2.
  • @19 Have you got any idea how many people play these games? You do realise that it's not all the same people asking for these things? They make a WW game, it pleases the people who want that, then the people that want furuistic fps complain that it doesn't match what they want. There isn't a group of people who keep changing their minds!
  • As someone who was an Activision employee up until a few months ago, and who's no longer bound by NDA, I can confirm that this is indeed true. The next entry in the CoD franchise is called CoD: WWII. And I don't want to spoil anything, so let's just say you guys are in for one hell of a treat!
  • @3: Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood is probably as close as you'll ever get.
  • This has definitely peaked my interest again for COD. I haven't played COD games since they went sci fi and tried doing a combination of Destiny/TitanFall/Halo. I will probably still do a wait and see as they could still drop the ball, but they have me at least paying attention now so that's a start.
  • I just wonder if they'll remember that their roots didn't include microtransactions out the wahzoo
  • now everyone is excited for a new COD, when yesterday they hated COD. way to stick to your guns.
  • If you arent willing to change your opinion when new information/facts come to light then youre no better than trump.
  • @27 these same people said "i'm done with COD" and "i will never buy another COD ever again". of course, most of those same people bought the last COD game, so it should come as no surprise. people say whatever they feel like flip-floppers) based on what mood they're in and what's trendy. no one is held accountable for what they say, including trump. I voted for hillary, would of voted for sanders, I take pride in sticking to beliefs and what I say.
  • @28 Your statement is too general to be accurate. You can't paint an entire group like. Yes, I did say I wouldn't buy another COD game...until they changed what they were doing with the sci fi junk. So I did stick to my guns by not buying/playing the last couple of COD games, but I never said I would never buy another COD game ever. That's the difference. Only a Sith deals in absolutes.
  • I haven't touched an CoD game since Black Ops II, but this game, if true, I will probably pick up. Won't be a day one purchase until the reviews are in and they show that his game will be worth picking up.
