Fight Night Round 4
Fight Night Round 4 to Have Zero Face Button Control
Written By

The guys over at IGN recently had an interesting interview with Fight Night Round 4 producers Brian Hayes and Mike Maher. One thing that stands out is that FNR4 will not ship with the option of mapping controls to the face buttons (i.e. A B X Y) and instead, you'll have to make do with the joystick.

"Joe_Jalbert posted: Is there an option for face button controls?
Brian Hayes: No, there is no option for face button punching in the final version, but we are investigating providing the option via DLC."

Despite the feedback and constant complaints from the community regarding the control scheme, EA Canada have failed to react in time citing a patch (they actually say DLC, but surely they can't sell that to the public?) as a likely solution. Now only time will tell how this oversight affects initial sales and even review scores. Uh oh.

I think the joystick controls work pretty good. It stops ppl from bashing the hell out of the face buttons like in FNR3.

I personally liked to use the face buttons. Now that you need to have to download it, which could possibly cost some points makes me want the game less.

Well all I can say is that sounds like some bullshit EA would pull. First they shut down some servers for there games now there gonna try and make a "DLC" patch for a controller configuration? WTF?!? Oh I forgot how "poor" EA Studios are...

Definitely not getting this now. I hate the joystick config because I can't make the appropriate motion consistently for the punch I want to throw, with the button config I could. I can't wait to see the reviews now.

They wouldn't charge for simple button mapping. Only people solely interested in money would do that, and we all know that video games are the last great bastion of true artistic expression.

Watch, it'll end up being a day one patch. EA can't afford to dick around if potential consumers are pissed before the game is even available. I don't need buttons, but am not so ignorant as to think there are some more arcade-minded gamers that would appreciate it. Like when you get buddies that come over and never want to play Madden with you because they don't want to get their ass kicked while you teach them the controls. There should be a "dummy mode" (no offense) for newbies. But they'd probably have to suffer with d-pad controls for clinching, low blows, etc. You'd still need the right analog to differentiate from left and right blows.

As far as paid DLC, for the love of god they should put out a Rocky character pack. Balboa, Creed, Lang, Drago...that would set a Marketplace reco

This is going to have to be first day patch because I played the demo and if your not down to a key on the Joystick it won't throw the right punch. And when you're in the heat of a fight you don't want to be screwing up because of stick movement. I love it in Skate with the Joystick responding to doing tricks because I can drop those tricks on a dime. Yet I wouldn't want to do it on a boxing game. I took FNR4 out of my queue on Gamefly because of Joystick punching. And if they charge for DLC with face button punching they can jump off a cliff with their game for sure.

Oh and you can still technically joystick mash with the joystick. I was doing throughout the demo to get quick knockdowns. Same works with Haymakers you can just keep throwing them as fast as they'll throw. You might wear out your joystick quickly though. So either way you can still mash (or just keep moving it.)

There was an opinion article a while back in GameInformer in which one of the editors cried foul over the relative lack of customizable controls on console games vis-a-vis PC games. I agreed at the time (i'd love to remap the Halo controls, for instance) and FNR4 is an other excellent example of a conceptual control scheme that should be optional. FNR4 doesn't need the joystick controls to make it work (unlike Katamari or even UFC Undisputed, a genre competitor), so it should have remappable controls. Without this option, I won't be buying or even renting FNR4.

This is pretty bad news for me as well. I was really looking forward to this game and now it's dropped off my list completely. I agree with 22 as well, just 'cuz you take out buttons, doesn't mean it stops mashing or spamming in general. Stick spammers will still be there.

@#24 That's exactly what 16 was saying. Gyp is the "correct" racial slur. From the racial profiling of Gypsies as thieves and hustlers. To gyp someone is to hoodwink, hustle, cheat or make fraudulent claims about an item or service. But what do I know about basic slang ;Þ

More BS from EA. Whether you think button mashing is for n00bs or not, you still have to agree that that's how a lot of people play those kinds of games. And when it comes down to it, are they selling the game or not?

face button mashing killed the online experience, so i'm surprised to see many people upset about this move. i guess a better compromise would have been remove face button config ONLY for ranked matches, that would have been a good idea.

i played round 3with face buttons and not played a boxing game without them... but this demo was great and no one should be complaining about the game itself... the stick is a very good thing to use and takes much more skill to use which in my opinion makes it much more realistic.. people who are complaining obviously have no skill or has not put the time into the demo to learn to use the stick

#30 I agree completely.

I hate fighting people on fight night round 3 who bash the hell out of the buttons, just because they can't use the joystick. I thought it took the fun out of the game because it wasn't challenging or fun mashing buttons.

Joystick all the way.

#6 Practice makes perfect. They should have REMOVED the face button controls for FN3, not add them as dlc to 4. FN games with the stick require skill, timing and dexterity. Any monkey can mash face buttons.

big mistake by EA they should at least give you the buttons as an option and to stop ppl getting annoyed create two online rooms for sticks only and buttons only. I loved FNR3 but because of the button layout for FNR4 I am not going to buy it. Also some of the stats are messed up if anyone knows anything about boxing Jorge Arce does not deserve a 91 rating.

who says they button mash ? hasn't it occurred to you maybe they just prefer the buttons ? I know how to play the game but I prefer using the buttons I don't mash it's just helps to know the x is a hook and y is a jab etc. I tried using the stick and it wasn't accurate. I really don't see the problem in having both sets of options to choose from. Who new EA would crumble at gamers whining about button mashing cause they don't know when to block and counter.

I cenceled my preorder after playing the demo. Not just because of the controls, but everything seems lackluster compared to FNR3.

I hate that EA had to shut down the Chicago studio, because I'm sure that if they had developed FNR4, it would have been a hell of lot better than what we're getting now.

EA are only shooting themselves in the foot with this decision, they are going to lose money if they think they can con fans into buying a dlc just to use buttons. I'd much rather buy UFC undisputed then shell out extra money just to use an option that should already be in the game.

Well i will admit i prefered the buttons to the stick on fnr3. I have also played the demo for hours in total and never managed a knockout or knockdown yet. I will keep learning the stick for sure and i will still be buying this game for sure.

There is no way EA will even think of selling button config as DLC even they are not that dumb.

Just because you all heard "DLC" your all assuming its going to have a price tag.

First of all, I need to note that this game is fucking gorgeous. lol, being able to a face into the game only makes me want it even more, despite the fact that I hated the demo.

On the other hand, even though I'm an avid user of the thumbstick, if they attempt to charge people for using the face buttons, I absolutely will not buy this game. The greed would overcome the good in that case, and as I am not living in a high-income family, they can shove FNR4 up their asses. If they try to charge for using the face buttons. I truly believe they won't.

Everyone's missing the real issue here: when will they fix it so one CPU punch doesn't land you on your ass while it takes you 15min of pounding to KO the CPU?

FNR3 was gay faggotry all the way. Got so sick of it I almost broke the disc in half, even though it was from Gamefly.

I can't stand professional "sports" like this, so this game was a no-go from the start anyway. But I can sympathize with most people; I dislike joystick-only controls more than I dislike button mashers, so this game fails.

if the gaming community decided not to buy the game upon release and says they gonna wait for the DLC. i bet you EA SPORT or someone involve in the FNR4 game WILL tell us a date for the DLC. i was excited when i saw the videos and heard abot FNR4, but now i have no interest in it, just because of the NO BUTTON CRAP, what da hell were they thinking? if they don't put an update out soon, that game will not stand a chance aganist UFC undisputed 2009.

Personally i think this is great i mean they designed this game based on there new Full Control joy stick stuff and guess what they stuck to that with not giving you the option to use face buttons.

In FN3 all i used was face buttons but after playing the demo for FN4 the stick is 1000% times better.

Good, the joystick controls should be the only controls. It forces the players to actual think before throwing a punch. I love the joystick controls for FNR3. To bad too many people opted for the easy button mashing way out. Losers.

It's sad to see this entire thread devolving into button masher bashing. Really now people, not everyone that uses face buttons are mashers, and this isn't the place to pound man chest to inflate net egos. It's a matter of preference to the player and common sense in game design and marketing. Make a game accessible to more people means more money and a better experience for more people in the end. If they charge for the re-config then they are really giving a haymaker to the face of gamers everywhere. I really hope they don't even think of charging for it.

I dislike button mashers in fighters and games like this too, but I prefer to use the buttons instead of the stick. Preference, opinions, everyone has them and it doesn't make them all the same as the worst of the sort they like.

LMAO at the people who think wiggling a joystick is a skill. The skill is throwing the right punch at the right time not getting the correct motion with the joystick. If you use buttons or the joystick its a control scheme, the skill is in using the control scheme right.

The funny thing is that I get so tired of people saying "Button mashing"..Most of those people cant fight in real life. If the stick had movements that were definite like real life people wouldnt complain. You flick the stick one awkward way and you through the wrong punch? thats not real life.

In real life if I want to jab you in the face Im gonna throw a jab. Im not gonna make a mistake and hook you. That doesnt even make sense.
