Mass Effect 2
Retailer Quiz Hints at a Plethora of Mass Effect 2 Post Release DLC
Written By
View author's profile

If there was one thing that really sucked about Mass Effect, it was most definitely the tepid and severly disappointing post release support.

For a game with that much scope and critical praise, you can only presume that BioWare had some sort of mild stroke around the time and totally missed what was a golden opportunity to strengthen their brand. Thankfully it appears that this trend won't continue with the  sequel, which according to a retailer quiz (a quiz used to get retailers up to speed on certain products) is looking to get a ton of post release support.

According to Destructoid, who received the tip earlier on today, the game is set to receive "planned episodic combat via DLC," weapon and armor packs, new downloadable characters, new downloadable worlds, as well as "full campaign expansions for download."

Furthermore the retailer quiz mentions "periodic updates," which will be delivered via the "Cerberus Network" - Mass Effect 2's unannounced in-game network.

In the words of Terry from Layer Cake, "about fucking time!" I mean seriously!

I hope they really do keep with the post-release DLC. Mass Effect 1 let me down so much in that department.

Good... as long as its all reasonably priced. I dont want to end up spend another $30-50 in DLC for a game like i did for Fallout 3. Still, I can't wait.

"planned episodic combat via DLC," weapon and armor packs, new downloadable characters, new downloadable worlds, as well as "full campaign expansions for download."

really? I remember seeing the same claims for other games, like Too Human, which never panned out. I would prefer something along the lines of what Bethesda did with Fallout 3, or even with Oblivion (except the horse armor...). Regular releases for several months of a nice bite size chunk. Enough to at least keep me interested in the game during the downtime before the next one comes out.

Seeing this, and the planned releases of DLC for Dragon Age, gives me hope that Bioware might actually deliver, but probably not the quantity most of us would like.

why is that? people who have a problem with DLC that comes out at the release clearly have don't have a fundamental understanding of software development. Code freeze often happens months prior to the game hitting the shelves. After that they go through QA and the only coding being done is to fix bugs, not to add content, for several weeks before it hits the shelves. Whats wrong with the developers working on additional content that couldn't make it in by the code freeze if they CAN get it done by release date as DLC?

Now, content that is purposely REMOVED from the game to be sold as DLC after the fact, is ridiculous, but its actually quite rare. Anyways, believe it or not, there is often a LOT of content that gets cut out in order to hit deadlines. Prior to the current generatio

Prior to the current generation, most of that content never saw the light of day. I have zero problem paying a little extra for some of that content, myself.

(and I saw a misprint in my last comment, scratch the "have" prior to "don't have")

Personally, I'll believe it when I see it. Did they not say the exact same thing about ME1?

About the massive amount of DLC being released for games lately: I have no problem with it if it comes out a couple of months or so after a games release to give people a reason to fire it up one more time, but when DLC is available on day1, I can't see it as anything other than trying to get an extra 5 or 10 bucks out of an already complete game, code freeze or not.

By the way, let me add that I do believe in Capitalism and I say if they can make money off of day1 DLC, then more power to them, go for it. I blame the people who spend more money on content for a game they haven't even finished yet.

I'll believe it when I see it. ME1 couldn't keep this promise.

As for GOTY, I think it will be awesome but console exclusive games hardly ever win GOTY. Therefor Bioshock 2 or Final Fantasy XIII have a better shot than ME 2 or GoW 3. Simply because more people have access to them. Sometimes this means the GOTY simply isn't that. Like when everyone said GTA 4 was GOTY when it was a great game, but GOTY it was not.

hopefully mass effect will be the new fallout in terms of dlc. as much as i hate spending up to $50 on dlc, mass effect is one of the only games that is an exception (for me) and a game that i just can not resist to support and play.
the more mass effect the better, and im sure the quality of dlc will be better than the pinnacle station dlc that was recently released lol.

Hopefully they deliver this time. I seem to remember Bioware saying the same about the original:

Funny how that never happened. I'll believe this when it actually happens.

The game's were already finished. Developers usually do this because they don't want to hold the game another 2 or 3 months. So they release it to the public so people can play it while they work on other ideas ( i.e. DLC)

...sounds like I will get the "GOTY-Sith-All-DLC-in-One"-Edition of the game. I'm done with buying a retail game for full price and afterwards play half of the price AGAIN for half-assed DLC. Not every DLC hast the quality of GTA and Fallout 3, after the sub-par DLC-packs for Mass Effect 1 my expectations for high-quality DLC for Mass Effect 2 are considerably lowered.

I only have to figure out whether to get the game immediately and dl everything, or wait for a GOTY edition that has all DLC included, like Fallout 3.

Probably the first one, because I love this series so much.

In case the majority of you haven't heard, which you obviously haven't, Casey Hudson (Project Director) came out and said why they didn't have more DLC for ME1, basically the game wasn't built to support it well. It was a large pack or nothing and they had never done DLC before so they underestimated what it would take to make. No excuse for Pinnacle Station which sucked, but he went on to say that ME2 was built to handle DLC of "any size" and that pretty much the entire team would shift into DLC creation mode besides a select few that would start work on pre-production ME3.

Whew. That's done. GOTY 2010.
