It astonishes me to see how quickly games are becoming mainstream, despite still being looked down on by certain tiers in the social structure. It's like the kid at school who was a social recluse who used to make fires in the wood and burn small animals in it, but as he got older, wiser, more mature and richer, he started to become liked.
Why am I chatting shit you ask? Because today Activision released a few internal figures regarding the Modern Warfare 2 release and it's frankly mindblowing. It triggers that sort of retrospective glance... for me anyway.
Activision today announced that in North America and the UK alone, Modern Warfare 2 sold approximately 4.7 million copies in its first day. Across the US, 10,000 retail outlets held midnight openings to meet the consumer demand and it helped Activision accrue a first day opening of $310 million. Not bad for a day's work, right?
The impressive sales will no doubt carry on from here throughout the Christmas and 2010; and with new maps and downloadable content hopefully on the way, Activision could be hitting the $1 billion mark in revenue in no time whatsoever... from one game.
