Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands
7 Things You Wanted To Know About the New Prince of Persia Title
Written By
View author's profile

The announcement of the new Prince of Persia title, The Forgotten Sands, actually raised more questions than answers, like... Why go back? Where does this fall in the timeline? Are there any donkeys? Thanks to Graeme Jennings, Producer on the title, he's responded to 7 lingering questions that we've all been curious about... although he didn't confirm or deny the existence of donkeys in the title. We'll get back to you on that one.

____________

Why are you going back to the Sands of Time storyline?
The Sands of Time universe is one that’s a real favorite of the developers at Ubisoft, as well as fans. A great thing about the Prince of Persia series is that it allows us to tell stories in many different settings, with different Princes, while always retaining some core elements that fans expect. Returning to this series is something that we’ve had in the production for quite a long time now, and we can’t wait for everyone to get a look at what we have coming up.

Is there any link between The Forgotten Sands and the upcoming movie?
The Forgotten Sands is not related to the film in any way, other than being based within the same overall universe from our own Sands of Time game series. The Prince from The Forgotten Sands is the same one that players controlled in Sands of Time, Warrior Within and The Two Thrones, and its story is unrelated to the film. We are very happy that the movie will expose so many people to the universe that we love so much, and very happy at the amount of talent involved with it!

Where does The Forgotten Sands fit within the Sands of Time timeline??
The Forgotten Sands takes place in the span of time between the original Sands of Time and Warrior Within, soon after the Prince’s adventure in Azad.

What is the story for The Forgotten Sands?
Following his adventure in Azad, the Prince journeys to visit his brother, whose kingdom is under siege from an invading army. In defense of his people and kingdom, the Prince’s brother is prepared to go to any lengths necessary. Through his brother’s example and his own adventures, he will learn that the mantle of leadership comes at a severe price.

Can you tell us about some of the powers the Prince will have?
The Prince will acquire powers that I can only refer to as mastery over nature. What that exactly means is not something I can talk about at the moment, but I think it will be extremely exciting to fans when we reveal it in more detail.

How would you describe the visual style in Forgotten Sands?
We are going for what we call Arabian Nights-inspired realism, in keeping with the other Sands of Time games. We have some very powerful technology at our disposal, which allows us to bring set pieces and memorable moments to life that would not have been possible before.

Can you explain what the combat will be like in the game?
Given that we’re designing the game with the Anvil engine, we have a tremendous advantage with the amount of NPCs we are capable of displaying on screen at once. The scale of the battles that you’re going to take be involved in when playing The Forgotten Sands are on a level that have not been seen in the series so far. Also, as was teased in our first trailer, we have some encounters in the game that will pit the Prince against the largest enemies he has ever come across, which we will be showing in more detail later on.
____________

So if you like the 2008 Prince of Persia game, then this sounds nothing like it.... which is a shame. We thought it was pretty damn awesome. Still, the original Prince of Persia games were equally as great.

Check out the trailer from the VGAs below if you missed it.

I thought the last PoP game was the best, maybe I'm in the minority but I'm a little disappointed they're returning the series to the original universe

Is it continuing with that black outline borderlands style graphics? (because i hope not). I probably would of bought borderlands if it weren't for this.

#4 I highly recommend Borderlands, you will be missing out on a true gem if you don't play it purely for the cell shaded art style. I am fanatical about Forza 3 and MW 2, but Borderlands is my favorite for GOTY!

Sigh... I'm one of the few that likes where the new Prince was taking us... Not that I didn't like the old series, but I'd rather keep going with the new Prince and his story. Oh well, hopefully the guy's comment about being able to switch Prince's and all that will mean they'll continue the new Prince's story in another game soon.

Honestly I put down the PoP game after the first section was reached. The wall running (IE: falling to my death) was maddening. If this game isn't dependent on that I'm all for it.

#6, true that. Borderlands was the best game of the year in my opinion, and easily one of my all time favorites. It's silly to pass up something so good because you don't like the art style.

They do seem to have modified the prince's looks to slightly more resemble those of Jake Gyllenhaal, though...

Oops, sorry. Anyhow, looks interesting. The Xbox PoP were quite good, and yes that means better than the 360 one. I have little tolerance for cel shading, it kills nearly all realism and immersion. And it seems like a way of cheaping out on development to me. Not to mention games that don't challenge you (such as, with the possibility of death) are far less rewarding to finish.

@10, If you found wall running hard and had to suffer the consequences, then maybe the original PoP isnt for you?

Just wait for the kiddies PoP, I'm sure they'll bring out a sequel to the kids one that came out last year.

Seriously, who makes a game where you can't actually die?

As for the "never dying" thing, seriously, who else would have just saved every 2 minutes and reloaded if you died anyway? They were just making you have less downtime when you "died" by getting you back into it. I'm tired of everyone complaining about that. Mass Effect... if you died, you just reloaded a previous save. Prince of Persia, you fell, you "reloaded" to the last platform. I don't see a difference. Yet apparently, it was a game killer for a lot of people. The mechanic is still there, it's just simplified for you, it's an uber Auto Save feature.

At least Ubisoft didn't listen to all the people complaining about it and put in some lame "Brass Balls" type switch so instead of rezing, you just had to reload a save. The only difference is the mobs got their health back, oo

It seems like a bit of a waste to create a brand new PoP universe and then discontinue it after one game, as far as I know PoP '08 did quite well critically and commercially. Why did Ubi leave the Sands of Time universe in the first place?

I actually loved the '08 one though I still think Sands of Time is one of my top 5 ever but they kinda changed things for a reason: they wanted to do something new, re-invent and explore and to see them go back instead of forward is....I don't know, disappointing?

This should be an awesome timeframe for a game from the the Sands of Time Trilogy. We'll finally get to see what made the prince go from the good prince in SoT and what turned him into the BAMF in The Warrior Within.

Probably going to be my favorite game on the 360 if Ubisoft stays true to this prince, which I have no doubt they won't 8).

@ 15: well, they dressed up Gyllenhall to look like the WW Prince...

@ everyone: The last PoP was a let down not because of Elika's savings, but because exploration is too easy and fights even easier. And there are 50 enemies in all the game... a bit too few.

@ 33: Ubisoft mediocre offering? Are we seroius? Ubisoft got out some of the best games I ever played between Rainbow Six, Splinter Cell, PoP, AC, ecc.

@39 I can see why people said there were too few enemies but if you think back to the original PoP (which is not SoT I'm talking about 2D Platformers) the system was very similar. It was more of a throwback.

I don't like the idea of them going back to the SoT story. As a trilogy it was pretty good but I got a feeling they are only going back to it to capitalise on the film.

Personally... I don't care how many baddies you can put on a screen, or how big they are. Dynasty Warriors can get hundreds of lackeys on the map, and many games have humongous boss battles. Big effin' deal.
I want to know COMBAT! I want to know if this game is going to fill the void left by the originals, or if they're gonna continue with the shitty "Oh wait! Lemme block you some more until I hit you ONCE!" bs done in the last game.

Give me gameplay, or give me death!

ok to the ppl who dont fully understand this game is not a continuation of Prince of Persia for Xbox 360 as they said they reverted back to a realistic graphics engine and the story line takes place in between the sands of time and the warrior within im hoping they will make a continuation of the PoP that realeased on xbox360 because i wanna find out what happens with the prince and elika if they dont finish that story line i will hate ubisoft

Loved the Sands of time series, loved the new one too. I don't know whether to not care or not though because I did want to see what they do with the new one now but I am pleased to see they can bring back the sands cause I did very much like those mechanics.
