DJ Hero Sequel On Its Wicky-Wicky-Way
Written By
View author's profile

Activision has just issued a press release for this year's MIDEM event, a music trade show where the publisher is hosting an exclusive Listening Session, giving upcoming musicians the opportunity to submit a potentially winning song which will then be mastered, mixed, "and featured in a future installment of DJ Hero."

Woah there! Re-re-rewind. What was that? A future installment of DJ Hero, you say? We'll take that as confirmation of a DJ Hero sequel then, especially given that a couple of weeks ago, popular DJ David Guetta revealed that he'd again be contributing his tunes to DJ Hero 2.

The news follows poor performance reports for the previous game, which sold just 211,000 units in November. Similarly, Activision's Tony Hawk's: Ride managed to scrape a mere 114,000 units sold in the same month.

Seems Activision will continue to make sequels to franchises that require pricey plastic peripherals anyway, despite the market not actually being there. Discuss.

Sequals usually make more money anyway don't they, as all the stuff they need is there apart from the songs. They don't have to program anything else and i guess the graphics will be the same like it was for a couple of the guitar heros.

The game is actually quite good. I doubt GH1 flew off the shelves when it first came out.

Does anyone else agree that these music games are getting out of hand? Don't get me wrong; I enjoy them sometimes, but the market is getting saturated. They aren't selling as well, but they continue to crank them out.

i bought dj hero and was fairly satisfied with the game, but to make a sequel so soon is just wrong. They should really work on getting more DLC and hold off on the sequel.

I'll end up getting the first DJ Hero when it has come down massively in price. I cannot justify spending £60-£80 on a bit of plastic (that has been reported as breaking fairly easily by some members of this site no less).

The guitar peripherals are quite hefty and can hold their own, but the DJ set has too many small bits that look easily breakable. So drop the price and you'll see the sales increase. I guarantee it !

@#2 - Actually, Guitar Hero debuted at #2 in the US charts and made $45 million in 2005... which is pretty awesome considering that the game only released in North America and it didn't come out till November. Europe & Japan got the game in 2006.

its got my vote @5 they put out more to meet more demands, if they put out x amount of music games then people would say there's not enough choice or its to hard/easy so by putting out an array they have satisfied at least 95% of the people that play music games, i for one cannot wait!

DJ Hero was fun, but more in a gimmicky Nintendo Wii sort of way. Fun for the moment, but I personally can't ever see myself getting into it hardcore like I have with Guitar Hero.

Also, Activision needs to learn to let things settle. If you bring out more than one game in a series within a fiscal year, you're just on autopilot and not doing enough to breathe life into the franchise.

@5 If you don't like all the music games out then don't buy or play them. I'm a big fan of music games and will continue to play them regardless of how many get released. I don't play RPG's or FPS but never complain about too many of them, i just don't bother playing them.

You have to admit that there's a bit of a difference.
Look at the huge variety when it comes to style and story in both genres, (RPG and FPS).

But these game are the same as the one that was out only a few months ago.
Sure the HUD changes a little and there's new songs, but what really stops them from releasing this as DLC?

It's almost like if Bethesda had released each of Fallout 3's DLC packs as a full game, imo.

I loved DJ Hero, it was the highlight of my Christmas. But I agree that 5 or 6 months between 1 and 2 isn't long enough. Though you never know becuase Valve put L4D 1 and 2 out in the same year and the 2nd one became a hit with people even though everybody thought it would suck.

@ 14 - L4D came out in November 08, L4D2 came out in November 09, how is that the same year? Don't you mean Valve released two games in a space of a year (exactly a year or not don't give one, but the fact remains they are both top notch games).

All these music games though, there all for fags, casuals and wannabes. True fact.

@23 I agree, plus it would suck if I spent all that money and they never released another game, dlc is fine, but we're talking another 1000g and a bunch of new songs, not 2 or 3 songs every other week for 240msp and no achievements.

I like the way they say that they only sold over 211,000 units in November because in that same month they were sold out everywhere, it wasn't the issue of people not buying dj hero it was more you couldn't find it to buy it, IMO they shudda made more units.

I heard about them making DJ Hero 2 over a month ago, maybe not official but is was always coming.
Also, there isn't much point Activision commiting to alot of DLC for the franchise yet as the fanbase isn't there yet. So a DJ Hero 2 makes sense really, to get more awareness of the franchise.

not a bad thing, but seriously, why do they make peripherals (the turn tables, skateboard, band set ect) soo expensive!

when i found a guitar on games website selling for £15, it shows hat not alot of money is needed to mkae or design or even sell to make a profit!!!!!!

money hoarding SCUM!!!

@6 Yes, some more DLC would be plenty nice, I agree. The thing is, a lot of things are missing, such as a custom DJ maker, an actual "set" mode, where the music can bridge together and not stop (I admit this would take work to do, and likely the first incarnation would be preset with no way to customize), MORE techno-flavored music (that's my style although what's there is good too), and the ability to handpick EACH sample you want to use, rather than having to use default lists which often don't have all the sounds you'd like. They would need a new game to fit that stuff in, as DLC just wouldn't cut it for those kind of additions.

DJ Hero is an amazing game, even though it falls in the music game category. I feel like it is much different and better than its predecessor "music" games. And on another note, Activsion should sell a Limited Edition version for the upcoming DJ Hero which features the game disc and music CD's of the songs that will be featured in the game. I would buy it. I love all the songs on the first game and gladly would have paid more to get the in a one-shot package.

Not a shock. They weren't going to make a brand new plastic controller and only have 1 game for it. Kinda silly if you thought it would never have a sequel, despite its terrible sales. Acti is in trouble with this 10 new games a year business model.

GH2 is my fav guitar hero game, why? because it's a true guitar hero game. Well and Markus Henderson was behind it but also GH3 was all about guitar. How the fuck can you have Stacy's Mom in a Van Halen game? WTF?

They "Acti" brought it on themselves.

DJ Hero was rated well by the critics because they get a copy to rate the game with. If the critic would actually have to go out and drop $100+ bucks for it I'm sure they'd be thinking a little different.

But the title of the article is awesome, haha.

DJ Hero might have been praised by the critics, but when the next one comes out and it's the same damn thing except for the songs it won't get nearly as good of reviews as the first one. Activision needs to face the facts; music games are selling less and less; they can only go on with this for so long.

They should really put some trance/house/techno music in the sequel. The reason I didn't bought this game was because of all that hip-hop music. I want Armin van Buuren, DJ Tiësto, deadmau5, Markus Schulz, that kind of music :(.

@no. 5. Is anyone complaining about the amount of shooters being released? NO. People (such as me) obviously enjoy many genres and so activision is meeting the demands of their customers which is admirable, despite lack of effort and huge return we still enjoy music games.........

its fun but the only reason GH games are selling is so well is well, because we already own a plastic guitar. I'm not shelling out an extra $60 to buy another peripheral, lower the price and maybe I'll give it a look.

i agree with #48. BTW DJ hero is gaaaaaaarbage. i hate that game. it is nowhere near close to anything of turntablism. who had the not so brilliant idea of putting buttons on the platter? idiot. at least guitar hero resmbles the motions of playing guitar/drums. you press strings, you press buttons. you hit drums, you hit drums. you dont press anything on a vinyl record, you simply move it back and forth. stupid idea is DJ Hero.
