Midway Games Delisted from Xbox Live Arcade
Written Wednesday, February 17, 2010 By Alan Pettit
View author's profile

In the midst of all their financial troubles in 2009 (filing for bankruptcy, selling all their assets and studios, etc.), it may not have occured to Midway that their licensing agreement with Microsoft to continue publishing their Xbox Live Arcade titles would fail to exist once the company itself was purchased and renamed by Warner Brothers.

Officially, the switch happened a while ago, and to be honest, I'm not sure when the games were actually delisted. It must have been recent as I've not seen word on it before tonight when an eagle-eyed forum member posted that all of the company's arcade titles have been removed from the marketplace. Without a word. Gee, thanks for the heads up, guys!

The removed games are as follows:

  • Cyberball 2072
  • Defender
  • Gauntlet
  • Joust
  • Paperboy
  • Robotron 2084
  • Root Beer Tapper
  • Smash TV
  • Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3

If you have previously purchased any of these games, you should still be able to access them through your Download History. Be sure to click "Continue" once they are downloaded and not "Play Now" to save the game fully to your hard drive before playing them. The online servers should still be in tact (if you can access the game still), as those are hosted on Microsoft's end.

If not, you're out of luck as these are gone forever. Not a good day for achievements becoming unachievable, is it?

To be honest, the game that probably is gonna be missed the most is UMK3. The good news is that new Xbox Live Gold Bundles might include another game than Joust...

Yeah I'm shocked that these games were taken off.

@3
You can always download a N64 emulator and play MK: Sub Zero on that. Probably the only way to play it other than to buy the original copy.

For all you people who couldn't get these games now i'm sorry for microsofts fudge-up I wish they would have let you guys get them, I have all the games except Joust, Paperboy, and Robotron. I myself woulda probably gotten Robotron no matter how shitty but oh well. I think microsoft didn't give free downloads because they still need money to fix RRoD lmao

Oh well. I'm sad that Midway has come to this, but that's business. I don't know all the legalities about such a thing, but it would be nice to see these games return to XBLA at some point in the future. It probably won't happen, and I won't really notice either way, but it's never a bad thing to have these products available for public consumption.

You would have thought that they would have given us some advanced warning over this. They always say "Don't worry if you need to delete it from your hard drive, you can always download it again!" But now that chance has been lost forever, which means that we paid for something which we can no longer access. I know that they qualified the above with "...for as long as it is available", but you would have thought that they would have given people at least a week's notice before nuking them. Not a good way to treat your patrons.

#32 ...huh?? dead online? maybe it was just me but i attempted to boost many times, during many different hours of the day, and i can vouch for running into at least 20-30 different gamer tags every time i played...or boosted. And the peeps on there were crazy amazing at the game!

By the way, you can re-download any of those titles listed above.

If you sign-in either on your console or via Xbox.com, you can go into your download history (purchase history on Xbox.com) to re-download any item.

http://marketplace.xbox.com/myAccount/PurchaseHistory.aspx

If you are doing it on Xbox.com, knowing the date when you downloaded the full game helps. If you are like me and download lots of [free] stuff, then you'll be in there going page by page until you them.

And if it helps, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 will be listed as "Ultimate MK3".

NOTE: Even Yaris full arcade game and the Yaris Picture Pack can be re-downloaded via this same method, but only if you downloaded it before it got delisted.

If people already had these games but deleted them and they cant them back from their download history then they should get thier money back or a way to get the game back otherwise that would be unfair. Im sure thats a problem though, midway would have to pay up except they are backrupt..

They would never do that, they don't care about us, they care about our money.

This situation supports my opinion that I really like to buy hard copies of things instead of downloading them on the internet. You know that when you buy a hard-copy of a game, it won't be delisted from servers IN MOST CASES (if an online game's servers go down then your game is still useless, but that's not the point here).

I hate how you never know for sure if you'll still have what you have bought the day after you buy the games online.

This is just like the time I could have met Mr. T at the mall. The entire day, I kept saying, 'I'll go a little later, I'll go a little later...' And when I got there, they told me he just left. And when I asked the mall guy if he'll ever come back again, he said he didn't know.

Well, I'm never going to let something like that happen again!

#10, no they should have warned us.
It wouldn't surprise me if warner brothers released a compilation disc to try to make up for spending money buying the company. Sure you might not be able to get the individual 200gs each but maybe they'll do it like the konami ones and not the sonic's genesis collection.

i agree with these people on here, UMK3 sold pretty good IMO, very classic and its one of the games that has cool fatalitys and nice kombos, no one likes that Batman MK with Orginal MK3 fighters, lmao, that was a joke, there suppose to be MK9 for the next gen consoles sometime in 2011 i think. and it will be like M and not T, with lots of blood.

@20 &71
If I remember correctly, those cards are not for download of specific games, they just have a picture of a game to display what one could choose to buy once they buy the generic msp card attached to the picture.

@80

No, actually there are unique download codes you can purchase from amazon and walmart. I've done it for Streets of Rage 2 and Splosion man. I'm also curious to know if these cards work, but I'm assuming that they do not.

Glad I got Smash TV, UMK3, Joust & Gauntlet when they were orginally released a few years back. No notice just sucks. Might have picked up Defender and Root Beer Tapper, but I guess no sale now.

First EA and now Midway...Maybe they will be on a collections disc. But the lack of heads up from Microsoft is a pain but expected.

RIP Midway you had some cool and different games. Time to go back to Paperboy and UMK3 and finish those achievements in your honor
