Crackdown 2
X10: Zombies + Co-Op + Crackdown 2 = Survival Mode?
Written By
View author's profile
Over the past few years a re-emerging gametype has become a "must have" for game developers. Gears of War rebooted the trend in 2008 and since then World at War, Left 4 Dead, Halo and many more have made this survival type mode - where you face off against wave after wave of progressively trickier enemies - a staple of their franchises.
Obviously with Crackdown ticking two of the boxes needed for this mode - zombie type monsters, check. Co-op, check - we asked the game's Producer, James Cope, whether they had this in store for Crackdown 2.
"It's something we want to do," said Cope, "but it's not something that we can really talk about at the moment."
No flat out denial is always a win, but saying they want to do it and they're not allowed to talk about it at the moment is a double-win. An indication that this game mode is somewhat planned? We hope so.
In other Crackdown 2 news, check out our latest preview from X10 here and keep an eye out for the interview with game's Producer, James Cope, that's set to go live this evening.

Ohh look, more zombies in a horde type game mode.

How original...

I get the feeling that these horde type modes is turning into the new MP in that so much has to have it included.

@7 you're probably one of the few that thinks that zombie-related games in general are overrated. Zombie games are more popular than ever now.

@6 well it is a multiplayer, and it's popular, so they're gonna include it. Don't like it, don't play it :)

I think this should be fun. Flying around the map and smashing zombies with cars and sniping them should be fun. Looking forward to a rent.

I love this sort of mode: Love Horde(Gears 2), Firefight(Halo 3: ODST), Zombie Mode(WaW) etc..

So I'm happy about this, that is if it happens. I've also heard that Dead Space 2 is going to be doing a mode like this.

And Zombies are awesome! I've been a fan of the genre ever since I first watched a George A. Romero film.

@ #9 and vampires and werewolves are more popular than ever now. As is 3D movies.

If they put zombies in every game coming up we'll soon end up with Need for Speed: Undead

I have high hopes for Crackdown 2, the first was so much fun, it doesn't need to be plagued with zombie modes to be fun.

but these mutants were genetically created in a lab and then had an outburst and multiplied. Zombies are dead life forms that come back to life. So no, they're not the same... technically. =)

@7 and on the day that film series recieves a game on the 360, I will abandon all hope, lets face it, it's probably the only thing they have yet to milk, I've even seen bloody Twishite dining stuff, horror.

On topic, yes please, I do enjoy these modes, some more than others but to be honest it won't do damage if the game is as fun in co-op as the first it's just another +

Zombies in every game? Is that what people are complaining about? I think that there are only a handful of games that have zombies in them (that arent really supposed to have them, e.g. WaW, GTA4)

Personally, this comes as great news to me, as it is one of my favourite game types.

And cmon, are you people really going to give up the chance using a super soldier to fight waves of 'undead'?

I didnt think so...

I got to disagree with you Webb, I think it does matter where they come from. Ruffian explains how they only come out at night, but can change later in the game. That suggests its possible have a brain, they adapt and organize. If that's the case, then no they're not brainless. More like they have animal instincts, territory prone.

It's interesting to see how things are lumped together anymore.

First off, it's a survival mode, not Horde mode. Gears didn't invent the mode, so please don't act like everyone is ripping Epic off.

Second, the world needs to stop overusing the term zombie. Did they die and rise up? If not, they're not zombies. Hell, technically, if they weren't brought back to life by voodoo ritual for enslavement purposes...they're not zombies. Romero's "zombies" are, by definition, ghouls (a ghoul being an undead creature that feasts on human flesh).

I really don't like that zombie has become a buzzword and is just used for anything anymore. If they died and came back, fine. But, just because something is infected or mutated doesn't make it a zombie. That would make it either infected, or a muta

I too am tired of zombie apocalypses. Or "Infected" apocalypses as they are now (Always with a capital I for infected, its the new way to say zombie apparently)

I played Prototype and rolled my eyes when I found it too was zombie mania, then played Saints Row 2 and facepalmed at the Zombie Uprising minigame when I found it. Overall I dont mind them, but by god, it seems the market is oversaturated with zombies now.

I suck at Survival modes and therefore don't like to play them often.

As long as it didn't take focus from the main game I'm fine with it though.

And the market is not oversaturated with zombie games but i have to say that zombies have a huge impact on society since their conception and many games have shown that influence.

I just can't wait to throw cars.

Most of you guys don't know what the hell you're talking about. Even with the recent flux of zombies in gaming they are far, far from reaching the saturation levels of Nazis, space marines, aliens, thugs, robots, or almost any other antagonist. About the only thing with a smaller niche are vampires and werewolves. Also take into mind how few of these games involve SERIOUS zombie outbreaks, as opposed to ones involving comedic value for the sake of cultural trend (Saint's Row 2, Borderlands, hell even Nazi Zombies isn't real serious).

Also, zombie is a mass-encompassing term. If you really want to get technical about it the shortstory "The Birds" was the foundation for the modern zombie blueprint. It involved a family trapped in their farmhouse that was getting pelted by hundreds of insane birds who broke their bodies against the walls and windows without reguard to their pain or lives, trying to get inside the house and kill the family. Romero liked the idea and used it for his plot of Night of the Living Dead, but replaced the birds with undead humans.

Also, Horde/survival or whatever you want to call it is a breath of fresh air. I've played like a hundred different games with the same generic Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, CTF, etc. variants and its nice to have a new mode that encourages team-work without the slow pacing of a campaign.

'Infected' are not the same thing as 'Zombies'

Watch a Romero movie for a zombie example.

Watch 28 Days later for an infected example.

they are completely different.

Not fussed if it's in or not. I'll still buy CD2 either way. But considering recent history from Game Devs. I can see this being Post-Launch DLC :-S

Regardless, I bought all the DLC for the first game, so it'd be rude not to do the same for the sequel, which looks much better just from the screens.

Can't wait for CrackDown 2 X-D

I hope they don't burn out the gametype by putting it in games that don't need it (Uncharted 2) or games that half ass it (Army of Two). I love the gameplay of it (they used to use these gametypes in games all the time ten years ago), but they might just ruin it. Gears of War and Halo did it very right (well.. Halo WOULD have done it right if they had used a mother fucking matchmaking system like all of their other multiplayer modes- I would still be playing firefight to this day).

its such a popular trend that I can guarantee Crackdown 2 will have it. Gears of War 2 only made it popular again because its a mainstream game, such game modes have been in a shit load of games since the 90s but more popular recently because of GoW2 and CoD:WaW.

I was looking for a new sandbox game, and the trailers I saw pretty much made you out to be some supermutant guy on the run from the army. I knew there were mutants/zombies/whatever, but not that they were at the zombie apocalypse level. I would have put the game on hold if I did, to give some breathing room from the things

This could be interesting if it was city-wide or at least island-wide and there was no restrictions on vehicles or anything. Dropping from a chopper into a swarm of "freaks" and then blowing them away with 3 friends sounds like fun. Throw in those MAG grenades and it sounds unique enough to be enjoyable. Anything less than that and they can keep it. L4D2 perfected survival mode within the 'closed arena' rules.
