X10 Interview: Capcom Talks Lost Planet 2

Capcom came armed to the teeth with more than just Dead Rising 2 at Microsoft's exclusive-centric X10 festival and alongside their zombie mashup sat their very own Lost Planet 2.

Amongst the hustle and bustle of the event, we managed to grab a few words with Capcom's Marketing Co-ordinator, Ryan Mcdougall, to ask a few of those burning Lost Planet 2 questions.

So your multiplatform Lost Planet 2 is at Microsoft’s X10... what exactly are you showing off today that fits in with Microsoft’s exclusive to the 360 mantra?

So what we’re showing today is the 4 player co-op. Lost Planet 2 is all about the 4 player co-op. When you get 4 people in the same group together, it’s important to have them look different, so the game has a really robust and thorough customisation system where you can change the way you look, change the armour you have, change the weapons you have.

As a unique part of that is these skins that we’re showing off: Albert Wesker from Resident Evil 5 as well as Marcus and Dom from the Gears of War universe who are joining us in this game.

How did these characters end up in Lost Planet then?

Well Resident Evil 5, that was easy... it’s the same producer and we’re really happy to have Albert Wesker in the game.

In terms of the collaboration with Epic and the Capcom Japan R&D team [research and development], that one was really special. We had that opportunity through a conversation. Both groups are fans of each other’s games, so we’re really quite proud to have them in the game. We obviously wouldn’t have passed down that type of chance.

Can we expect to see any Lost Planet characters in Gears?

We’d love to have it mutual, but right now we’re not making any announcements are far as that goes.

Will there be any differences between the characters? Weapons, unique feel to them?

Well those two characters will be playable in the campaign and in the online modes, so you’ll really be able to experience that from all different perspectives. In terms of the play styles, the different weapons and anything like that yet, we’ve not made any announcements yet.

How are you planning on pushing Lost Planet 2’s experience and differentiating it from the original that was an acquired taste?

The main different between this game and the original is the 4 player co-op. That really changes everything. Besides that, the snow planet that you remember from the first game, this is the same planet, 10 years later. In between they’ve done what they call terraforming and warmed it up. That’s released these epic environments like the jungle you see, as well as the deserts, the cities, the wastelands, even the water. All those different parts of the game really change the way you play. Every environment is completely different and when you see them you’re really going to understand what we say today.

What sort of weapons have the people going hands-on today at X10 got at their disposal? Any unique ones?

What we’re keen to show today is really all the customisation, so if you like a short range weapon and don’t want to use a shotgun, you can change it up to be a flamethrower... you can change it up to be a revolver. If you like long range weapons you can use your energy weapons and that type of thing. I believe the guy behind me is using the customised shotgun along with the normal standard assault rifle.

So the bosses are obviously a big part of Lost Planet 2 and have been covered a lot in your screens to date in the build up to the game’s launch. Can we expect the traditional formula of, the further in, the bigger they get? I mean so far, the earlier chapters have shown some ginormous bosses... can we expect even bigger bosses?

It’s not a linear relationship between time and size of boss to put it that way, but yes, we will be getting bigger and bigger bosses throughout the game. When we start off with a normal boss, he’s the size of a building... we end up with bosses the size of a city by the end of the game. We’re really proud because when we have those bosses, they’re fully textured and high-res and they all have their own AI.

In other games, these guys would be going around in circles on train tracks. These guys will hunt you down. If you take one tactic, they’ll counter it with another. They know where you are and they will find you.

So there are massive improvements with the AI?

Absolutely. Especially with our bigger bosses, but even with your co-op friends – if you don’t have 3 guys to hop on with you, you can replace them with AI partners, or if you choose not to, you can play literally by yourself. Those opportunities, we have really great AI, so if you want to run ahead and capture all the data posts and do all the objectives, they’ll do all the firing for you. If you want to be the guy at the back doing all the firing, they’ll capture the objectives for you. They react to you. They know what you want to do and it’s really quite impressive.

It seems that the bosses aren’t just more elaborate either, but the standard enemies as well...

Absolutely. With every new environment we get a whole new set of creatures to fight against. The two legged guys we’re showing here are brand new to the game. What’s special about them is that they’re very quick, they’re very fast and they’re very aggressive. However, they do have one major weakness, those two legs, if you knock one out, they’re very vulnerable on the ground. You really have to think about these things when you play Lost Planet 2. It’s all about new tactics and new strategies to work as a team. You can’t just run ahead like you did before.

Does the difficulty scale up depending on how many players you play with?

In terms of whether you play by yourself or you play as a group, it’s the same campaign built all the way through, it’s really up to you how you want to experience it.

If you want to play it by yourself, the first thing I would tell you is that there are difficulty settings, use them. The second thing I would say is that you have a shared life pool throughout the group and that’s the same whether you’re playing by yourself or with 4 people. If you think about it that way, you get to die the same number of times, but you get to control all of your lives. So if you’re playing with a bunch of guys on live, it’s important – just like real-life – not to die.

So what you’re effectively saying is that it’s harder to play as a co-op team then, right?

What I would say about the pool of lives and how you have to share them between a group of co-op players is that’s when the communication comes in. The game is probably going to be best played as a group, you can do things like... with the first major boss, you want to be fighting him from the inside of the boss as well as from the outside. The only way to do that is with a co-op team that actually talks to each other.

The AI partners can do part of that and they can actually work with you in exactly that way, but when you get online and you’re telling your friends, “I have a shotgun and I’m going to get close to him,” and the other guy has a sniper rifle and he’ll stay far away.  That type of communication and those type of tactics are what makes the 4 player co-op experience special.

What sort of competitive multiplayer modes can we expect?

So we are shipping 16 player online multiplayer. We’re going to have normal things like deathmatch and team deathmatch, that type of thing, as well as really unique Lost Planet modes like capture the territories, fight for data points, or you can play as the Akrid.

Loved the demo, already preordered. The only thing I'm NOT stoked about is Marcus, Dom, and Wesker. Yeah, they might seem cool but they just don't belong in the LP story....I don't give a f*** who produced what. That's like, for instance, throwing the guy from God of War (sry not into PS3, don't know his name off the top of my head) into the Halo universe.....hmmm.....NO! But, hey, whatever makes a sale right? Should be an epic game nonetheless.

im really skeptical about this game, Just get the feeling that the AI will probably suck despite what this guys saying, i mean anyone remember Sheva?!? Also lets not forget the cut content. Its a shame because i was looking forward to this.

On a positive note atleast its actually shipping with multiplayer...

Not going to touch a capcom game till they sort the shambles of a game called darkvoid out!! I want my grase monkey achivment only one i need for the full 1000!!!! But the glitchy game wont give it to me!! So no more crapcom grames for me till thats fixed. Shame cause so looking forward to dead rising 2 and lost planet 2.

I more worried about the set of achievements, lacking multii-player and terrible insane difficulty from the 1st game. We know how 4 player co-op games work it's nothing new.Left 4 Dead, Halo 3 etc. Hope they don't have that shitty collection thing that they had in the 1st game.

It seems to me that the majority of people in support of LP 2 are the people who haven't really played the 1st game or colonies. Just speaking from what they seen in the demo.

What I"m basically saying is that they should fix the core aspect of lost planet 1st then promote 4-player co-op on the side. Many of you are forgetting how unsucsessful the campaign and multiplayer was. With the constant T-Eng drop, fall back get up time, boss battles that required the same thing over and over. @ 21 I wouldn't recommend it but you can get it extremely cheap nowadays.

Crap my original post got cut off, I basically said in it why multi-player in that game sucked, bigger boss battles does not mean better, adding gears character etc to cover for the flaws, Gamers nowadays raising expectations too far getting disspointed too often, Flaws from the 1st game. All in detail, damn it got cut off!

There was nothing wrong with the original Lost Planet.

The single player was Easy on Easy and Hard on Hard...these days "Insane" difficulty is a joke. I like to see a game where the hardest difficulty punishes you. Besides it wasn't exactly Ninja Gaiden.

The online was brilliant and had an amazingly good community.

Personally I'm hoping for more of the same, hate when they try to cater to the casuals and piss on something that was already good. (Resident Evil, MW2, Mass Effect 2 etc.)

Collecting the target markers was a bit shit though. I don't mind collection things but I prefer audio logs and shit that adds to the story not floating coins that don't "exist" in the game's universe.

@ 23 I completely disagree with you about the view that nothing was wrong with lost planet.

If anything comes to mind it was the original T-Eng systems that limit every, YES every aspect of the game such as if you wanted to explore, or be in a mech suit without feeling presses for time, the higher the diffculty the worse it got, not the games mechcanics itself but the constant feeling of rushing things before you ran out of T-Eng.

Another example would be the boss battles, it was basically the same over and over, shoot the bright spot. No matter how big the akrids became the same core repetitive outcome would not change. Another issue that is Very Very important was the duration it took to get back up after being hit back down. It so silly because by the time you got back up the ene

Crap I keep getting cut off, I writing from an iPod but still....

Anyways llike I stated in that cut off piece. Lost planet is an okay game but by no means is it a great game. And when comparing Ninja Gaiden to this it's apples to oranges.

Ninja Gaiden is hard for numoirous reasons such as the games unforgiving nature, the sheer amount of skill needed to be developed, the extreme cheapness of some moves, enemies use. Etc..

Lost planet on the other hand is the stupid amount of ammo you have to burn at the enemy mixed with the oh so very very limited T-Eng.

I don't mean to spam this article but I would also like to add to the mid-information that the online and it's community was brillient . By no means was the online great , a fact supported by it's lack of popularity on the xbox charts when it was released to today. Players do not get a clear sense of the objectives and it was a real mess online. The community is very small and continues to be so everyday. The only people that play are the hardcore japenese players that have reached the level cap so reset themselves to level one in order to dominate without being a target. New players easily get dominated and people just boost online. Which was the sole reason why colonies came out to fix these issues. However to a huge extent remained unsuccessful.

A few months ago, I REALLY wanted this game. Now my interest has waned a bit because of the fact that they had to Gimp it because of the DVD9 restrictions. I'm not about to pay $60 for half of the supposedly "originally planned game", only to later find out that it was all on the disk in the first place, they just wanted to make money on DLC unlocking codes.

So, I'll wait for reviews and I'll see what the length of the game is, but this is definitely not a Day One buy.

@Spartanwarninja: Lost Planet 1 was a good game. It certainly wasn't perfect, but it was unique and fun. I didn't have a problem with the T-Energy, it gave you good incentive to blow the crap out of every thing in sight. On normal difficulty they gave you plenty of T-Energy to do a fair amount of exploring... not so much on the harder difficulties, but all Capcom games are ridiculous on hard. Not that any of this matters, because from what I see, Lost Planet 2 will not even have T-Energy.

Oh, and the bosses were cool, even if they were a bit repetitive. Besides, most game bosses are kinda repetitive in my view. That doesn't mean you can't enjoy unloading a few metric ton of bullets in them.

So, lets review: One; You're actually a Lost Planet hater in denial (judging by the five volume book you wrote, you don't really think the game is "okay"). Two; there's really not much in your criticism that even applies to LP2 (the game this article is actually about). Call me ignorant but would anyone care to explain to me how you still need T-Eng to survive in places like the jungle and desert? The whole point of the T-Eng was so that you could survive the planet's extremely cold temperatures. Oh well I guess we'll have wait and see. By the way I completely agree with you SpartanWarNinja. Took the words right out of my mouth.

i hope there's still a man hunt mode on line. it was a crazy feeling knowing that 10-15 guys were out to kill you and only you. trying to pick them off one by one without letting anyone know where you were hiding. that was epic!

Last time I checked LP was unforgiving, took some real skill to beat on extreme with all targets and could be cheap sometimes. Sure NG is a hack n slash and LP is a shooter but I mentioned NG for a reason - they're not entirely worlds apart.

2. Yes this does apply to LP2, it is relevant, just read my 1st post. In order to expect a good sequal the original should have been good as well no? I hope they pull a Killzone on this game. :) 3. Yes I was extremely bored but I enjoy writing if it's something worth writing about, I wrote this on an iPod waiting for my friend to come over. No, I don't see how this pertains to LP2, since one of your big complaints was T-Energy (which I mentioned is fixed), and you don't really know what Capcom did or didn't fix since the game isn't even out yet.

If you don't like Lost Planet, that's fine. If in fact you do like it, that's fine too. I just thought your interest in the game, and your apparent contradictions in opinion were odd. You wouldn't tell your friend he's an okay dude, then say you dislike nearly everything about him, would you?

It's funny how you quote every negative aspect on what I said and then label it as evidense for contradiction. I stand by what I say, I would"nt recommend it but it is still a okay game. I want LP 2 to be good, the demo in my opinion was pretty fun. But you have to understand that by addressing the flaws In the orginal, it can act as a basis for a better sequal. You don't have to agree with me...

Plus if you thought my intepretation was too harsh why did't you say so before. Instead of finding something in my post to argue with you could have listed what you thought was good about the game and compare. I don't mean to set out on finding a fight. I just stated that I didn't understand the megahype for this game after playing the 1st. Plus I do agree with some of the feedback you and others posted.

Lost planet has the best online community.I just hope capcom improve the online connection unlike gears 2 online connections. Youn can sell the 4 player co-op etc but any lost planet fan will tell you is that they actually buy the game for 16 player multiplayer.I hope capcom do not dissapoint because alot of gamers will not stay for laggy online play.

I quoted all the negative aspects, because that's the only things you had to say about it. I'll explain the contradiction (again); most people would probably agree, that an "okay" game would be in the 7/10 range, one that has it's share of flaws but is still kinda fun. And, a game with a dozen major flaws, hardly any fun, and that you tell people isn't even good enough to bother picking up, would be like a 5/10.

So, one minute you effectively call the game an okay 7/10, then turn around and rip it apart like it's a 5/10. Hence, contradiction. I'm probably being too generous, the disparity could actually be more like 7.5/10 and 4.5/10.

I thought it was pretty obvious what I was getting at in the second post, that you were coming across like the game is absolutely terrible. In other words, that you were being too harsh. And I did list things I thought were good about the game, I just didn't feel like listing all of them.

The "megahype" is because the game has nearly everything a video game nerd could hope for: mechs, big guns on mechs, fighting monsters the size of shopping malls (in mechs), and exotic settings for it all to take place in. Oh, and pirates... any kind will do. It would seem you don't care much for these things however.

LP2 may not live up to the hype, and I agree, it would be great if all previous issues were fixed, but shouldn't you give Capcom the benefit of the doubt? It just didn't seem like you

I wasn't trying to start an argument (although it certainly turned into one), and you're more than welcome to your opinion. The issue is, I take exception to people (and I've known a few) who will act middle of the road about something, then tear it down like it's the most loathsome thing imaginable. It's either alright or it's horrible, you can't have it both ways. If the major gaming sites reviewed games that way, we'd never know if a game was decent or not!

Sometimes you just have to cut a game some slack. Appreciate what's fun about it, and don't overly dwell on it's minor shortcomings. You'll probably get a lot more enjoyment out of gaming that way.

That's about as clear as I can state the matter. I'm glad this article is now old, but I still apologize

The game could just be average. I " dwelled" on the shoutcomings to address it flaws. I do agree with some of the things you mention but everything I say you will just counter argue. It's just turned into me defending my statements. You're no longer talking about my thoughts on the game but myself as a person. That was why I kept commenting back.

I don't disagree with your opinion on the review, I'm disagreing with your indirect personal attacks.

Well, it's a little late to address issues, since LP2 is surely a finished game by now. The "attacks", you pretty much asked for with your rant. You can't expect to post like that and not aggravate people. Somebody else said something about banning someone for spamming so many news articles. That was before I joined the spamming party, so he must be referring to you.

I figured this was what you wanted (for entertainment?). Would it kill you to admit you were being a little too hard on the game, or alternately, that you just don't care much for it? It is, after all, not worth buying. But this is all now irrelevant.

While you were gone, the judge ruled you were in contempt of court for obstructing due process, and evading the facts. Case dismissed!;)

I was fucking right. All this bickering and what did i say.

Failed Reviews.
Failed Fanbase.
Low Population.
Bargain bin game after 1 week.
Failed critical reception.

I had every right to say this game was gonna become a disapointment and i still think lost planet 1 was average game.

I think this Judge needs to get fired because he clearly is in denial.
