Rumour: Activision Remove Senior Infinity Ward Staff For "Insubordination"
Written By
View author's profile

Apparently, Activision has actioned some fairly heavy-handed organisational changes at Infinity Ward, the uber-developer responsible for the CoD: Modern Warfare games.

According to G4TV's The Feed some non-uniformed "bouncer types" showed up outside the Infinity Ward offices unannounced and studio heads Vince Zampella and Jason West weren't seen again by fellow employees following a meeting with Activision on Monday morning.

In a SEC filing made this morning, (an overview of the company's finances) Activision detailed a human resources investigation into "breaches of contract and insubordination by two senior employees at Infinity Ward." The two employees are reportedly the aforementioned Zampella and West, though what these "breaches of contract" were is currently unknown.

Infinity Ward community manager, Rob Bowling attempted to address the situation via Twitter, writing "I should also say, while I appreciate all the calls, tweets, messages and hearing my ringtone a lot, they're in vain - as I have no info."

Jason West updated his Facebook status today to unemployed, ending his 9 years and 3 months with Infinity Ward. This lends a great deal of credibility to the story, though the nitty gritty details remain unconfirmed.

Activision is good at fuckin up pretty much everything they get involved with (IW, Guitar Hero, etc etc)

Youre right, insubordination is worth firing people responsible for one of the most successful games of all time, GREAT logic

#7 Thing is, insubordination is near enough a meaningless word, it is so general. A great many things could be filed under that term. Sounds to me like the sort of word that you might use if you were trying to cover something else up, if you know what I mean. Looks like some big time "office politics" going on.

Ouch, can't wait to hear this definition of "insubordination". LOL @ #5 : "Stick it" may be the polite paraphrase of what was said.

Zampella and West will just start up an indie studio and honestly can't wait to see what they come up with not having Activerlord sitting on their heads. (but guys please please please beta first and give your fans party chat back!)

Activision are awful,

IW are rumoured not be developing another COD game, perhaps activision wanted them to hand over all there work to the new developer (rumoured to be a startup developer. Or perhaps they were asked to work with treyarch, whcih wouldnt have gone down well after the WaW build up

I'm normally quick to pull the trigger on Activision but until the details are made public, I'm gonna play devil's advocate on this one. If I tell an employee to do something and they refuse to do it, I would consider that insubordination. If that's the case I would've fired them too to keep from losing control of my own company. Let's be honest, if you find out that you won't lose your job whether you do what the boss says or not, how often are you gonna follow their instructions?

It'll be interesting to see the dirty laundry when it leaks. Wonder which group was being the arrogant dick and making a power play. Its either:

IW: We made you more money than everything else you released put together, we want more money.
Act: Fuck you

Act: We made all this money with your last game but we own the franchise and are ordering you to make the rhythm based COD Hero MMO with special controllers and pretty colours for all the noobs. Oh and you can't kill players because it makes them sad. And the guns have to shoot rainbows that make people happy and peaceful and eager to run off and cuddle a puppy. And there has to be another nuclear explosion for no readily apparent reason. Oh and you don't get royalties because we own your studio and therefore your staff
IW: Fuck you

i hate people complaining about bugs in MW2 every game has them its just MW2 has more people playing it then any other game ever sales wise so bugs are found alot faster. No game is truly perfect and IW dident ever say they would stop COD they just wanted to work on MW games instead of historical games like WW2.

I know it's cool to hate Activision right now, but did anyone actually stop to think that maybe they were justified in firing those two people? They must have done something wrong if Activision had an investigation going. I doubt this is because they looked at Bobby Kotick the wrong way and he decided to do his best Donald Trump impression and say "You're fired."

I'll just wait to hear about more details (if any can come) before I jump on the "fuck Activision" bandwagon for this one.

Exactly right @35.

How do we even know what happened yet? I'll put on my flame suit for this one, but IW are not perfect. MW2 has become a haven for jackasses, with all the cheating, hacks, exploits, etc. It's entirely possible Acti just simply got tired of them not responding quicker to issues. Or it could be completely different than this altogether.

Infinity Ward isn't that great a Dev team. They're only "well" known because of the CoD IP which they flog time and time again.

Lol get out with that crap ass excuse. No game has ever come out with that many glitches. All of this could've been avoided if IW came out with a multiplayer beta. Halo 3 and CoD 4 had betas. Sure they still had glitches, but good God not as many as MW2. This is Gears 2 all over again....

Also, on Zampbella's Linkedin page, his current employment is listed as TBD (to be determined) and one of his past employments is "Studio Head/CEO of Infinity Ward". This whole thing with IW and Activision is all over other gaming sites, especially Kotaku and G4.

Activision wanted IW to make another COD but as everyone knows, IW was thinking about not making another one... Activision probably got pissed and that could be one of the reasons why these guys were fired.

The guys that got fired should team up and start a new company similar to IW... but WITHOUT the greed and influence from the corporate whorebags like Activision... if they start a new company, then people from IW will most likely quit and join the new company... the new company should be an Independent one so they can create any game they want and go to any publisher they want

@51, that could possibly be the reason.

Another possibility could be that even though the game made a nice amount of cash, Activision is worried about their public appearance with all the gamers trashing MW2 because of the bugs/glitches. I sort of doubt that Activision cares about their public image though as long as they bring in that money.

@52... Activision doesnt give a shit about anything except bringing in money... thats why they want to turn Call of Duty into a "subscription" game so that we have to pay even more money to play the game when we already pay for xbox live... the most likely reason they wantto do this is because they dont get any money from xbox live subscriptions so they want to create the subscription game so they can bring in more money...

Everything Activision is doing is just destroying their reputation. Activision is just too big and too greedy now... and all this is going to lead to the destruction of a great franchise (Call of Duty).

Don't forget, IW was EMPLOYED by Activision. You don't like what your employer wants you to do? Get the fuck out, or get fired. End of story.

I am not surprised at all the hate towards Activision, when they act and sound like a giant evil organization people tend to stereotype the company.

Pro Tip: If you start a video game development company, don't sell out or at least make sure you have controlling share of your company. Then you can't be fired because you don't what to make WWII games anymore =P

2 things:

If they (Vince Zampella and Jason West) breached the contract that they had with Activision then they (Activision) have the right to fire them.

Now if they (Vince Zampella and Jason West) broke the contract for a reason such as suggested in awesomepizza's article than that is a completely different story. Until details emerge then all we can do is guess.

And to your comment on the russians in the airport if you remember at the start of the game it gave you an option to play that level or not its not there fault if you decided to play it and was offended also they have put a rating of 18 on it so if under 18's play it, it isnt there fault. If you are going to complain about that then what about films united 93,Omagh,Flight 93 all terriost films you see my point. IW makes good game when it is just them calling the shots, it was not till active started directing that is went to crap! But then on another side it is the best selling game ever, so what does that say!!!

The on-disc DLC definitely did it. Activision probably thought there was gonna be a DLC boycott if they didn't stomp them out, so they did.

Doesn't stop them from milking the shit out of the kids for some DOLLAHS, RITE. Where is the on-disc DLC anyway? Would'nt the RIGHT thing to do would be to release it for free, right NOW, because it's already ON there, right?

Oh yeah, right. It's Activision.
