Infinity Ward Suffers Another Wave of Staff Walkouts
Written By
View author's profile

Following the firing of Infinity Ward founders and former studio heads Jason West and Vince Zampella, no fewer than nine employees have now left the Modern Warfare 2 developer.

With  two key players - Lead Designer, Todd Alderson and Lead Software Engineer, Francesco Gigliotti - leaving at the beginning of the month, seven more have since followed suit over the ensuing weeks, taking the current tally up to nine.

Three Infinity Ward devs left the company yesterday, all of which were also key team members. Senior Animator Bruce Ferriz left to join Big Red Button Entertainment in Santa Monica while experienced programmer Jon Shiring and Lead Designer Mackey McCandlish also quit the company separately.

Today, another four staff members have joined the wave of walkouts. Steve Fukuda, Zied Reike, programmer Rayme Vinson and lead artist Chris Cherubini.

Since being dismissed from Infinity Ward, West and Zampella have formed Respawn Entertainment with EA and their lawsuit against Activision is still ongoing.

Surely this is good news, all the people pissing and moaning about broken games and over priced DLC should be really happy now. Infinity Ward are going to have to restructure, and hopefully as part of that they'll take on some testers who know what they're doing.

Meanwhile, the people who made the game who left can go somewhere else and make a game that rivals MW2 but delivers better unbroken gameplay and without stupid DLC pricing.

Is this such a bad thing you've got to admit modern warfare 2 was nothing like it predeceasing call of duty games. It was more about special ops mission and government conspiracies. I'm not saying that's a bad thing but isn't call of duty meant to be about the struggles that every troop had to endure... the hardships they faced in battle... the franchise should really get back to what made the call of duty games great... your average everyday solider

OT: im not sure what to think of this. I like all kinds of games, so i guess in the end if these companies get it straightened out and end up making good games for the respective companies then its win/win for all of us. We shall wait and see

There is one word about this all to Activision.....KARMA

Serves them right for becoming a major cashcow and overcharging just because its a brand name...shame the same thing aint happening to the guitar hero devs... I am sick of the XBL marketplace and game headlines being spamed with guitar hero crap

@24 You barely ever see guitar hero songs on the marketplace, it is mostly filled with lips and rockband.

@26 I really hope they don't win cause i would much rather MW under activision then EA, no matter how bad they are MW and MW2 were great games and EA would probably just fuck it up turning it into medal of honer or battlefield.

@27 EA would probably let West and Zampella do whatever they want. Also, let me remind you that West and Zampella were actually on the original Medal of Honor team. After that, they created Infinity Ward and I think that that's the last thing they want to make is another MoH. EA has been pretty relax with companies such as BioWare to pretty much do whatever they want. I don't see why Respawn would be any different.

EA can pick them up and deliver the final blow to Activision and the CoD franchise once and for all, they killed CoD, 4 was amazing and WaW was really good but MW2 was just milking the franchise, just like Guitar Hero games, hope they teach Activision a lesson

@7 Activision is witholding the royalties that IW is entitled to, which is why Zampella and West filed the lawsuit in the first place which got them canned and started this whole mess; because Activision is a bunch of greedy pricks the gamers have to suffer. I never thought I'd say it but GO EA!!!

This had to be expected. This means that Zampella & West were icons in the development of the franchise. Maybe those who've left will be joining the Respawn Studios. If so, there will probably no more MW nor other CoD (unless from Treyarch, but they suck!).
Keep your eyes focussed on Respawn Studios/EA, as they'll probably bring something wonderful by Winter 2011, Spring 2012!

Call of Duty will still be produced. Activision owns the rights to that, but also in the lawsuit, West and Zampella are trying to get the rights to the Modern Warfare franchise, since that's one of the many things Activision promised them yet failed to deliver on.

I wonder, if all these people who had a big hand in making the MW series what it is leave the company, does that mean that IW will go back to making games more like COD1 and COD2? I hope so. Then those who left can go to Respawn and continue the MW games from there for those of you who liked it.

Clearly it's not the end of MW, it's activision guys. They will milk the name for all it's worth and make every last penny they can before they run it into the ground. They'll find someone to make a game with soldiers and guns and call it MW and shove it down our throats.

Am I the only one that feels that IW is way over-hyped? Seriously. They are good at making theatrical moments in games, sure. But how about fixing what is not working in the games? I made the decision to trade in MW2 (after having not played it much in the last few months anyways) after I read about the latest exploit with the 9 harriers at a time...And the article says that IW has known about this since January. NO EXCUSE TO NOT FIX IT.

Most people treat them like they are curing cancer or something.

Anyway, best of luck to Respawn. Hopefully, COD can be salvaged in the future because we all know Treyarch does a pretty shitty job with the franchise.

lol I'm loving the new game company name, considering the situation. And I'm glad that the founders are keeping their passion for what they do strong with doing so, despite Activision kicking them right off the map. Hopefully these other walkouts have done so for the right reasons.

@ #4, i agree, i play video games for entertainment, as a means to relieve stress, and to experience fictional drama, not real drama, haha

i just hope the online community doesn't suffer anymore... MW2 really does have great potential, and can be one of the best online shooters i have ever played, and i play it just about everyday, but the drama of even online play is getting to be too much, with all the glitches and mods and what not

I wouldn't stay if everyone else was leaving either. Who would want to work with a bunch of new guys.

Call of Duty isn't going anywhere though. Someone else will pick up Modern Warfare and Treyarch can hold it down until then. Thank God too! First Rainbow Six is buried and now threats of this. No matter what happens I won't be playing that crap pile of a game BF:BC2. Such a lame game...online at least. I didn't give the story a shot after playing the idiotic multiplayer. (I like how people also assume that someone must suck at a game if they don't like it, I was actually really good, too bad the game wasn't)

You guys aren't reading what I'm saying or you obviously haven't read everything going on. If this lawsuit that West or Zampella are on goes the way they want, and it just might. Activision or IW CAN'T do anymore MW games for the sheer fact that the MW rights belong to West and Zampella like Activision promised them.

I'm kinda happy this is happening, Activision bought blizzard and ever since they have done that, they thought they were untouchable and could screw up the gaming industry as a whole. So good luck to respawn entertainment, I hope they do well. On a side note EA hasnt been as bad since Peter Moore took over.

The only other news that would top this for me is if EA COMPLETELY re-staffed it's whold division that doesn't handle sports game. Also the team who made Dead Space should stay.

God I have to add this!

@83 that's the cover up for something that was probably true. We can tell when Modern Warfare nubs come over. They love to just run into the middle of everything its sooooooooo pathetic! No tactics whatsoever, They made it a point so that anyone could pick up Modern Warfare and they succeeded....a retarded monkey could prestige all the way. lol

i would find it funny if everyone left and activision went from having the biggest selling game ever to having none at all cos they got too greedy and only cared about seeing how much they could charge for a game with broken mp that is extremely noob friendly, and dlc of just 3 new maps. I just hope west and zampella create an original game at their new studio and if they win the lawsuit not go back to just making one game all the time like with activision.

hmmm....no more DLC for MW2? Who develops MW3 if there is one? What madness will Respawn come up with with EA publishing?

Also will Treyarch step up out of the WW2 era? Please! At this point I'm not too sure if what I've heard about them going to Vietnam would be all that enticing either. Wouldn't it just be the same thing but instead of Germans you now get the Vietnamese in the jungle?

Also a lot of people knock MW2, while it's not as groundbreaking as COD4 campaign was fast paced and pretty sweet, spec ops was amazingly successful, and the online was more enhanced. Now if they can fix lag issues, glitches, and a few other things this game isn't polished in high gloss but is still great nonetheless. Why else would it have sold near 10 million copies?

I agree with #99 I want to see how the ends begins at the end of the beginning when this trilogy ends. But lets face it there isn't going to be much of IW left soon. I can see Robert Bowling being the last man standing doing everything on his own very soon hahahaha what an awesome interview that would be. I'd love to see a tour of IW when that day comes.

I love how whenever i see a MW topic i see hundreds of BFBC2 fan boys (who are no better than MW fanboys) trolling about how its "Such a better game". Shouldn't matter they are both clearly good games since MW2 sold like what a billion copies i heard or made a billion dollars or something and theres plently of BFBC2 fans that are'nt fanboys so lets just get along and respect others likes and dislikes you dont have to force your opinion on people like a dictator.
On another note Activision is greedy not IW (activison priced the map pack at $15).IW workers are clearly showing that theyre not greedy by leaving and not caring about their royalties. They are "fighting for what they believe in".

OT: I really think they will all leave and go to Respawn. That wouldn't be all bad. The only thing I hate about EA is EA Sports since they capitalize on sports fan every year with games that make little innovation. Seriously I have 4 or 5 friends that buy NCAA Football, Madden, and NBA LIVE every year for the last 5 years and plan on continuing for as long as they keep making them.

This was probably pointed out some where between comments 10 and 130, but MW as a series will continue. Its quality? Who knows. (Which was always up for debate anyway) but Respawn will make their own IP now.

So in short... who cares?

@138 EA sucks big time they somehow ruin games all the time they are much more greddy then Activision EA makes like 7 sports games ayear and they shut down servers witch saves them money on thare part but F's over all of the games that have got that game if EA gets MW and make MW3 thares no way in hell im buying that game i dont care how good it is EA sucks and they F over the gamers and if you think Activision Spamed the Guitar Hero games EA spams us with Sports games with at least 6 to 10 a year.
-------------
@124 Microsoft Priced it they paid for the DLC they got to price it also Microsoft prices 60% of the DLC anyways so........
------------
EA sucks!........if EA did not shut down thare servers to a game thats 1 or 2 years old i wont hate them but they do like F'ing us gameers Ov

EA is slowly taking over the gaming industry.

When you look at it though all those sports games per year make a ton of mulah. :p

At this point, and with seeing all this non-sense, I would say Treyarch are more reputable with their development of a particular series.

YEAH!!! After they took a great game like MW1 and turned it into garbage for the sequel who cares what happens to IW already... played MW1 off and on with Bad Company till COD:WaW came out, MW2 was garbage straight out the box. Storyline wasn't impressive, MP has too many bugs... oh well Treyarch FTW... I liked IW till MW2, but then again you can't please everyone, IW will always have a fan base.

It's about time that some studio showed these big companies that they can't be controlled. I'm tired of EA, Activision and all these big companies bossing around these great developers who have never done them wrong all so they could boost their sales. I know it's business, but they have to realize that they aren't going to take this shit lying down. I, for one, am glad that Infinity Ward is falling apart. Maybe now Activision will realize how stupid they were in firing two of the guys that have made them so much money. I highly doubt MW3 will be a good game with a great story like MW was. It's too bad really, but Respawn Entertainment will come out with something good I'm sure.

@146 unless I am mistaken Halo still holds the xbox record.

Halo 3 sold 8.1 million units
MW2 sold 7.5 million units

These are just sales on the xbox 360. If halo had a multiplatform release it would sell more but we will never know.

As far as the guys leaving, good for them. They see how the treat people and do not care to continue with the company. I really hope they get the MW name even though I HATE HATE HATE EA.

IW and the MW2 fanboys can plant their thumbs firmly up their... noses, for all i care. Overpriced game and DLC when the original MW was so much better.
Also, comment #159 was awesome.
