Asteroids/ Asteroids Deluxe
Enter the Xbox Live Time Warp and Travel Back to the 80s'
Written By
View author's profile

Until April 25th, Xbox Live is going retro with a host of old-school content including classic 80s' movies like Top Gun, Scarface and the stop-motion version of Clash of the Titans in HD on Zune.

Game Room also goes retro (wasn't it already retro anyway?) with Asteroids Deluxe, Scramble, Red Baron, Football, Tutankham, Star Raiders, Lunar Lander, Mountain Madness Super Pro Skiing, Centipede and Yars' Revenge.

Finally, there's a range of retro clothing over on the XBL Avatar Marketplace, including big hair, neon pink shirts and more big, loud clothes from the decade that fashion forgot.

And then there's Lips: I Love the 80s' too. Far too much 80s' stuff if you ask us.

Click here to go to the Xbox Live Time Warp page.

@ 1 - Were you born after the 80's or before?

If you were born after, you don't know your penis from your thumb. The 80's had the best of everything except Movies. That goes to the 90's:

Music
Games (classic Retro, the true start of Gaming)
Clothing
TV
Cartoons

@ Comment 4 - Because older gamers want to relive the classic's on newer machines - i have to admit half of the games i dont remember (espically on Atari 2600 / Intelivision) - but its nice to see classics like that make a come back - sucks about the choice (and prices) though.

on another note = 80's Rocked! (espically movie and TV Wise)

The 80's were awesome! And yes you could get those games on Game Room when it first came out. So that is just wrong acting like they are adding something cool. Who cares about paying for movies when you can just watch them on Netflix. So over all a pretty crappy selection if I do say so myself. Im bummed out now. Thought it was going to be something exciting.

@ 12 - Uh, you still have to PAY for Netflix bucko. The only difference is that for streaming, you get unlimited so long as you're paying for a DVD rental. With Zune or Marketplace DL, they cost per video.

You don't have to buy any of this, its just being made available. The majority of gamers are 80s babies and i'm sure a lot of people will dig this. I'm not a fan but i wasn't around then, so i wont dog this.

Why hate something you can just ignore?

and why has the poll on this site been the same forever?

The movies (Raiders, Empire, John Hughes, Goonies, etc.) and games (NES era Nintendo, every good arcade game outside of fighting games) in the 80s were awesome... the fashion and the music was god awful, but in a tacky, ironic, easy to make fun of way.

In any case, not buying any of this junk.

the best of the Indiana Jones movies, the best of the Star Wars movies....and of course Labyrinth and Willow, its officially when George Lucas wasn't a tw@(ignoring Howard the sodding Duck)

How about no Bee Gees or Gloria Gaynor? Shaft wasn't all that hot of a movie, and have you seen the pants they wore in the 70s? Sure, those were some great music acts you listed, but on a whole, the 70s were pretty much abysmal unless you were a fashion tragedy or stoned....or both.

Why do they always remember the shite stuff when they do retro themes, the 80's was the prime for all the old school metal bands! So why not celebrate by releasing a classic metal track pack (Iron Maiden, Slayer, Judas Priest etc) for rock band or guitar hero, that would actually give this crap some significance!

Hey I have an idea, if you don't want to spend the money on the stuff then DONT!!!! Stop complaining about themes that Microsoft is doing, just ignore it if you don't like it! Guess what they're a company and yes they need/want to make money to survive, if you don't like it go live in a shed and poop in an outhouse! Funny thing is most of the people complaining about this have a GS of over 60,000 which means YOU SPEND THE MONEY ANYWAY you F'ing hypocrites!!

#62: Dragon Ball?! Haha OK, so the only good thing to come out of the 80's was a fuckin anime? Yeah, you're right, the 80's were pretty terrible.

How about Labyrinth, The Goonies, Stand by Me, Aliens, Blade Runner, Terminator, E.T., Platoon, Empire Strikes Back, Blues Brothers, The Shining, and on and on...Come to think of it, the 80's were pretty awesome. I'm guessing it's pretty hard to appreciate it when all you know about the 80's are the deluge of crappy synth-pop tracks that now pollute the music world.

80s movies are baller-status. The Terminator, Aliens, The Thing, The Fly remake, etc etc.

The early 90s did have better music though.

Also, if you're going to mention 80s anime, instead of that faggot Dragonball shit, why not throw out props to things like The Fist of the North Star, Akira, Neo-Tokyo, and The Professional: Golgo. That's real man's anime, not that trite bullshit like Naruto.

By the way, guys: it seems we're getting the original Double Dragon in the Game Room eventually (not the one that was on the XBLA, but the actual arcade one with mullets). I was getting kind of bummed out that I wasn't able to beat up Abobo since the XBLA one got delisted.

To be honest games developed ov er the years into something GREATER than they were in the 80's. We owe alot to the building blocks of atari and the 80's for bringing us the games of today but I really dont understand the big huph in playing really old games that are really out dated. Yeah i can understand playing an old classic like space invaders and maybe frogger too but some of the titles in the arcade room just dont hit the mark. Its going to be a huge flop guys - sorry :(

The 80s had several cool things. It was the start of a new era. Reaganomics, MTV and 8-bit fun are just a few of them. However, many people have mentioned the music of the eighties and not mentioned the Dire Straits. I'm relatively certain that anyone who fails to mention them in ANY conversation about the 80s is destined for failure. You can argue back and forth over which was better, but just remember that you're all wrong and I'm right. No, but seriously, it's all opinion based and having seen the majority of the eighties, all of the nineties and whatever we call the 2000 - now years too. The eighties had as much to offer to certain audiences as any other decade.

Now, as for the games. They aren't new, they're "featured" this is a marketing term that they use to make you think it's

I got cut off and I can't remember the remainder of my point, but just know it was well thought out, well written and exactly what you wanted to read.

Did you seriously just thank the 80's for MTV? Here's a gun, now go shoot old yeller in the back yard. She needs to be put down with the 80's.

Okay, as far as I'm concerned every decade has had it's ups and downs; I could sit here and list a bunch of them about the 80's, but I really came to comment on the game associated with this thread. Asteroids seemed a lot easier to play on the coin-op stand-up booth console than it is on my Xbox. Does anyone else have that opinion or am I an only gamer-child?
