Dead Space 2
Interview: Steve Papoutsis Talks Dead Space 2
Written By
View author's profile

At EA's spring showcase last week, we managed to catch up with Dead Space 2's Executive Producer, Steve Papoutsis, to talk all things Dead Space.

Being the video geniuses we are - self proclaimed by the way - we decided to shoot the interview in the darkest of areas in the spirit of the game... or, if you don't believe that, we had to make do by catching the local fireflies, sticking them in a jar and using them as our only source of light, Yeah, we did that... Orrrrr, if you don't believe that, then, that's where we were stuck.

Talking to Papoutsis, we sought to get Visceral Games' main objectives for Dead Space 2, why Isaac now has a voice and a face, and whether they're planning a Left 4 Dead style versus mode for their multiplayer. All that and so much more!

If that's not enough and you didn't check out our first impressions last week, check it out now. Go on, it's full of lovely words.

EA is making them add multiplayer, which dead space DOESN'T NEED, just to force people to pay for the 'online pass' BS. Of course if you don't care about achievements then it doesn't matter just play Single Player and be done with it, but we all know (esp on this site) that achievements matter to a lot of the 360 community. Screw EA and I won't be playing Dead Space 2 I'm boycotting their BS.

Man EA is starting to get on my nerves. Do they honestly have to put their name on every game? Dead space is fine without a multiplayer system I enjoyed it being a single player game. I just hope it doesn't hinder the storyline or I will be really pissed at EA.

EA is not making people pay for the 10$ Inititive. It is simply for those who are cheep, or cant afford to buy the game brand new. To be able to access the content. People such as "achievement whores" who buy every game used then sell it off will be affected by this. Personally being a person who wants to support the industry and buy most of my games new I love that I get free access to things in games. I think Dead Space could have some sick multiplayer but thats my opinion.

Companies want to destroy the pre-owned market in hope their sales will increase. I think it's fair to say that unless you're a complete idiot, you're aware that it for most people has nothing to do with being cheap but being able to afford it. They are under the impression that by making certain things available to brand new purchasers and more expensive to pre-owned that sales will increase - it will likely in fact be very different. People will NOT buy their game or will buy it pre-owned and NOT play online. Quite frankly, if you want to be a smart guy and support the industry, you'd be better off supporting those who think this is a stupid attempt at further money making (as if they aren't making enough) because THEY are the CUSTOMERS, CONSUMERS, THE MARKET.. without them, games

Paid regardless of sales, I might add. The fact of the matter is, people are fucking greedy and have no idea what it's like to be grinding for all the money you earn, to the point where if you are a gamer and have a family you struggle to buy brand new titles.

The above isn't me, I'm fortunate enough to be in work and earning enough money to buy whatever I want, but when I was unemployed, the pre-owned market was a god send.

First of all its only been anounced for EA SPORTS, the code thing being required for online play, which i could care less because I hate sports games. Secondly, as much as I dislike what they are doing, I am not going to let the developers who make these good games suffer for what their publishers do.

That and Dead Space could have some cool multiplayer (dismember your friends and enemies anyone?) lol

Also, I love the franchise since the first (and extraction) plus the comics and movie, so I will definately be buying it day one anyways (even if im broke, i'll find a way!) Same goes for Mass Effect 3.

I agree that it is good for the gaming community to have the abillity to go for the used games but it sickens me when a company goes under that makes incredible games and the reason why because of lack of sales of the game. But with the used copies the resales are through the roof. I hardly see a good selection at any of my local games stores of new games but there is always used copies. It seems that right now the Used market is killing the Game Companies. In addition Gamestop is going to start selling dlc in stores this fall. If the used game price goes down to compensate for these dlc initatives then the dlc purchase requirment will change nothing. But that is only if gamestop takes the cut in used games overall prices.

I am glad they are implementing the $10 initiative because Gamestop has a license to steal and I would love to see them go out of business. It is ridiculous how cheap they buy games that have been out mere weeks ($20-$25 tops) then they put them right back on the shelves and sell it for $55. Not only that, but they are always the last place to see games go on sale. Fuck you Gamestop!!!!!!!! They haven't seen my business since I traded in all my old systems + games 4 years ago for a 360. I don't care how good their preorder incentives are. I even bought Lost Planet 2 at Best Buy and went home and bought the map pack for $5 when I could have gotten it for free because I would rather Capcom and M$ get my money than Gamestop. Never again I tell you.

Oh dear god is nothing sacred anymore? What game francise is going to get multiplayer next.....

I'm sick of this trend. And I LIKE multiplayer, when the game is fashioned for that purpose. Games like Left 4 Dead, Modern Warfare, etc. are perfect for multiplayer. Games like Bioshock, Assassin's Creed and Dead Space are perfect for single player. Why do they need a Multiplayer component? Ugh. I bet there's going to be a ton of grinding for the online achievements too......

I feel like the single player game is going to go the way of the dinosaurs.....

I'm guessing your in the US? I'm in the UK and places like CEX/Game/Gamestation and indy shops make pre-owned selling a decent prospect for everyone. I'm personally fed up with playing 39.99 which is roughly the equivalent of what you're paying in currency for a game that's good, but ends in 6-10 hours. I just spent 39.99 on Alan Wake and have 1000/1000 on it already, it's crazy.

Now on the flip side, I just bought Red Dead and I got it a day early at an indy shop and I'm 10+ hours in and only 24% complete - worth the 49.99? So far an astounding yes. I guess it's all about variants and if more games were 20-30+ hours or even 50+ like Fallout, then I think people may very well be more inclined to TRY at least and purchase instead of waiting along time for pre-owned. Again though,

You sir, speak the gospel. Why IS multiplayer necessary? Maybe it's because of the achievements themselves...the developers and microsoft know that (for some reason) the whole achievement thing causes people to buy games. Even if it's only for some imaginary number that is totally meaningless to anyone outside of the community; probably even to most casual gamers anyway. I'm guilty of it, most of the people on this site are. But I will still pick this game up, mostly because I have faith in this franchise. I bought DS 1 new and played though it 5 times because it was awesome. I hope to do the same with DS 2; but if they make me grind through hours of shoddy, tacked on MP I'm gonna give up on DS.

Point is, make a good game. Go ahead and make money, but don't destroy a fran

Did you seriously have the words "EA" and "developers who make these good games" correspond to one another? EA has been at the bottom of the barrel for over a decade in my eyes. After they turned into a pack of self-righteous morality-faggots and shelfed a completed Thrill Kill back in 1998 they've only released two good games.. Dead Space and the original Army of Two (the 40th was such wasted potential). Dead Space 2 is going to be casual action-horror for all the limp-wristed pussies who couldn't go 10 minutes in the original Dead Space without calling out for mommy to turn the lights on.

#12, they have to do that. It's called "making a profit." If they wanted to buy a recently released game form you from the same price, what would be the point? They would tank, and frankly, It's something I don't want to see. I've gotten some pretty sweet deals through GS.

@6 couldnt agree more.

If a games company is making such incredible games then it wont go under like people are stating. If games are good then people will buy them.
If developers are talented then they will be re-hired and make good games with someone else.

Another problem is that games are far too expensive in the first place. New games are coming out every week almost and i want to buy them all. It's not a case of people being cheap or having shit jobs, its just i would rather not pay 160quid a month on games. There are other things in life to spend cash on.
Also 40 quid for 7 hours of gameplay on games such as alan wake or bioshock 2 leaves most people no option but to wait for pre-owned games. People dont want to wait for new games to drop in price - look how long cod4 was £40

@ 3 - If you read anything, you'd know the EA Rape Initiative is only for Sports titles ATM. It very well could stretch into other genres but not the case now.
Regardless, DS 1 was amazing and it does have a great team working on it so I have faith. Kind of excited for the MP myself but I'm keeping faith it won't take away from the story.

# 26 - "Franchise - A form of business organization in which a firm which already has a successful product or service."

When they announced after the first games success that they were building a trilogy. Not to mention the animated movie, comic and book. When you build a backstory into lore through other medias or sequels - You have a Franchise.

They'll give you what's in the game, and that will be the full game. If you're going to not buy it because you're assuming it'll be bad, based solely on the fact that it's a sequel; please, go ahead and be done with games forever.

they always put out "full" games. DLC is extra stuff and DOES NOT have to be purchased unless you want to experience for story that they have initially ADDED. if you want to quit playing games because of that, go for it lol

anyway, my outlook on this game is that it's going to be fantastic. the first was great and the second is going to be the same, this is a pre-order for sure once i get paid w00t

Exactly. The only thing I would disagree with on a similar matter is when you have to pay for an unlock code, and so the data is actually already on the disk that you paid for. That's just annoying.

"What we discovered is people were-believe it or not- were too scared playing Dead Space" Steve Papoutsis. Because of that they're gonna have moments of rest between moments of intensity. Ok...... if you're 17 or older which is what you're supposed to be to play the game; and you're too scared while playing Dead're a major pussy. I'll admitt the game had some "fuck me!!!" moments but, I put 4 hours into the game when I 1st got it. Multiplayer is totally gonna ruin this game!!!

MULTIPLAYER?! No thanks. EA, you just lost a customer. I'm tired of this multiplayer trend oozing over into my favorite single-player games. All for the excuse of easily produced MP maps that you can charge a rediculous 800 microsoft points for tagged witch achievements that can't be unlocked without 2 or more microtransactions, yes?! Next you want us to buy avatar props and clothes for cheevos... BLAH to you. I swear, ps3 looks purdy sometimes.

Yeah, Dead Space shouldnt have multiplayer. Its survival-horror, so that should be single player. Look at Resident Evil 5, they tried multiplayer and that was just a big stinker. Haha, ill still be getting this game, but hopefully they put more effort in single player than multiplayer.

Co-Op campaigns would be pretty cool for Dead Space. That's all I'm going to say, because I don't feel like getting into this silly argument about "OMG EA IS SO GREEDY" or "DEAD SPACE DOESNT NEED MULTIPLAYER" as if you people actually have any idea what the final contents of the game are going to be at this point.

It's not the multiplayer I hate in games... It's the ridiculously stupid achievements for multiplayer that irritates me. If I look at an achievement list and see that the multiplayer achievements are going to be difficult or REQUIRE boosting to even get reasonably... I don't buy the game. There's no point in buying it. Why should I waste time in multiplayer trying to get these achievements?

Multiplayer is for playing with/against your friends or other random players. It's not for trying to get 1000 kills in ranked matches. It's not for playing 100 hours of ranked games. It's not for winning 30 games of Free For All Slayer.

Multiplayer should be about the fun and not about forcing players who want achievements, to play a specific way and ruin their own experience online, just to get something as simple as an achievement.

While I loved the immersion of the first one (damn 2nd Hunter encounter). It really comes down to what kind of multiplayer it is. If it was a co-op or multiplayer mode that maintained the atmosphere, I doubt anyone'd be complaining
