Red Faction: Armageddon
THQ Unveils Red Faction: Armageddon
Written By
View author's profile

Ahead of the upcoming trade show, E3, THQ recently announced Red Faction: Armageddon for a March 2011 release.

Set decades after the events in Red Faction: Guerrilla, you take control of Alec Mason's grandson, Darius Mason, who after an apocalyptic series of events is forced underground with the rest of the planet to start again in an underground network of caves.

Mason - who is an entrepreneur of sorts in the new underground civilization and profits off of mining, scavenging, etc - is paid to mine in the wrong place at the wrong time, disturbing something dark and something very evil.

The official site also teases an improved Nano Forge - said to give the user super-hero abilities - and a repair ability that allows Mason to resurrect once damaged objects by firing a swarm of nanites at decimated man-made structures to repair them.

Expect more details and screens early next week when the weekend passes, but in the meantime, here's the official first look trailer which debuted on GameTrailers a few days back.

We'll be checking it out whilst we're in LA for E3, so keep close by and we'll bring you our first impressions.

@#3 - I assume there was a commercial before it... I never saw it. If you don't want to sit through the advert, click on the official site and watch the trailer there. Sorry, we have no control over that stuff =P

Looks sweet. Developers decided to add a bit of horror element to the game...but i'm not sure RF needs it though.

@#7 - Well I assume that most of the third party pubs don't have press conferences, so announcing before E3 and showing at E3 seems to be the best way for them.

Let's hope they ease down on the collectibles and races. They were tough in the first one. The mp challenges were tough, too.

Pfffttt, why would I repair things with a nanite gun when I can destroy them? JK. This looks like it will be an improvement on Guerrilla which was a lot of fun. @18 I agree with you about the crates, I spent hours destroying those things with my maul only to give up on finding all of them around 30 hours later.

I did really like the Guerrila but it was soooooo frustrating, plus I hated that buildings would stay standing on one support. This one looks way better though, AWESOME ALIENS! Hopefully the campaign may have some co-op the other members of Red Faction sucked ass!

@#21 well spotted :)

I'm a little concerned seeing this trailer. I loved RFG but didn't like the overated constrictive orignal games and this seems to take a leaf back from the original. Also, if your underground, what can you destroy without the whole mine collapsing on your Noggin?

Red faction 1 and 2 back in the day were a pair of awesome games, wasnt so keen on guerilla though to be honest.

Hopefully with this one going back into the mines like RF1, it will be a bit better

@18 @20 You didn't have to find the all the crates, only 250 and all them were around buildings or other things, none were just out in the middle of nowhere, very easy to find. The ore collectibles you had to find all of them, but they showed up on your map when you got close to them. The collectables in this game were rather easy compared to other open world games.

Really looking forward to this game. I'll be buying it for the MP alone, really loved the MP in Guerilla.

I loved RFG however, what is there to do undergroud?
There can't be many buildings to destroy and it looks alot like you are fighting aliens. I really do not understand. I hope it takes place outside with buildings and such otherwise being cooped underground really doesn't seem like my sort of game. We will have to wait and see what THQ/Violition say about this game.

Here's an idea, what if they make Red Faction an FPS like it used to be. I know that there is quite a saturation of FPS's on the market but back when the first two came out the kicked ass and I'd like another one like them but with updated graphics like these. I'm just saying, it would be nice.

I like how they've listened to fan complaints about RF:G and added a gun to repair buildings.

Not sure if it will be free roam by the trailer though... I mean, there won't be any destruction events if the main enemies are aliens.

More than likely the reason they are announcing it now is, A: Its going to be shown off with one of the big three's press conferences, B: They have something bigger to announce and didn't want it to get lost in the shuffle, or C: They've got nothing so they wanted something to get the press to come to their both and see more info on yet ANOTHER WWE game.

It wasn't brilliant but I liked Red Faction II just enough to pick up Guerrilla and to begin with, while I wasn't too sure about the change to 3rd person, I loved the capability of the physics and Geomod 2.0 engine. However, as I progressed through the game it dawned on me that the game offered very little else, it had sparse, once building had been destroyed that was that, between settlements was vast barren areas (understandable considering the setting but not particularly fun) and a very weak storyline, so much so that I had to force myself to complete the story.

It's a familiar storyline but then a lot of games use themes similar to other games and movies so I can't begrudge them that, however, I'm not so sure that Armageddon is going to fare any better than Guerrilla unless they pull something quite special out of the hat.

Was waiting for someone to mention this. Notice how many people said they haven't finished, or had to "force themselves" to finish the last game?

I'm glad they're trying to do something different as far as scenery. The last game had great MP, although it was overshadowed by bigger titles.
