E3 2010: Rock Band 3 First Impressions - So You Wanna Be A Rock Star?

View author's profile

Rock Band 3 excites me as both a gamer and a music fan. Not only does it introduce the much-loved keyboard – yes, I love it, so I can get away with saying that – but it’s trying something that will open up learning real life instruments to the masses with its Pro mode and series of guitars.

I know that there are some people out there that will ask, “Why don’t you just buy an instrument, you tool!?” but that’s not the point. Buying an instrument is easy, but learning a skill like playing a guitar is not only a lonely affair, but it also requires supreme amounts of dedication and patience. Doing that alone is tricky, but learning while Rock Band is there to help, assist and make the experience bearable – pro-tip: learning instruments can be frustrating! – what else can you ask for?

That doesn’t mean Rock Band is going hardcore, no way, it’s just broadening its horizons and it’s every bit as accessible or challenging, whatever end of the spectrum you sit.

As always, it’s all about the music and with close to 2,000 tracks said to be available in the Rock Band Music Store this holiday season, 83 on disc, fully confirmed backwards compatibility, it’s clear that Harmonix are on track to deliver on that front.  You can expect “songs ranging all the way from new bands like Rilo Kiley and Metric, to White Stripes and Them Crooked Vultures, all the way back to bands like The Doors, White Snake, Huey Lewis and the fucking News, Queen... we have Bohemian  Rhapsody in the game,” says Harmonix’s singing maestro, John Drake. Of course, we know all these already, right? And as expected, all your old instruments are compatible as well.

So what’s new from a feature standpoint?

Rock Band 3’s improvements seem to be subtle – but effective – tweaks for the most part. Not only will Rock Band 3 feature drop-in/drop-out support, meaning a friend can jump in and out of a song at any time, but also a filtering option, allowing you to choose genres, key support, length, time period, etc, meaning you can manage your collection effectively. The new “Overshell” will also give each player their in-game menu as well, meaning if someone wants to switch to lefty – weirdoes – you won’t have to back the whole thing up to the main menu just for one person and it stops them from getting evils all night from your cronies.

There’s also the ability to save setlists to your console and share them with your friends – you can even make them on the web so they’re ready to go when you get to your console – as well as Song Recommendations in the Rock Band Music Store and these things called “Road Challenges” which are 2-4 hour challenges for the veteran and hardcore players.

There’s even persistent careers as well with hundred of goals, achievements and character unlocks for the player that really wants to excel with their desired instrument – or all of them if you’re feeling up to it! No matter which mode you’re in, you’ll be progressing through your career goals.

Wait... there’s more...

That’s not including the vocal harmonies that are coming across from The Beatles: Rock Band and All Instruments Mode which is 7 players at once playing on one screen. Nothing game-changing, but like I said, subtle tweaks that make it a much more enjoyable experience... That is until you mention the all-new Pro mode and the new keyboard which smacks you in the face and says, “Innovation!? I’ll show you innovation you varmint!”

The keyboard looks every bit as impressive as I had hoped it would, with a few different ways to play it. The standard mode is traditional Rock Band stuff, known as “Keys” mode, which is a “representational simulation experience” and gives you the usual 5 lanes to play through. Ultimately that means if you don’t have the keyboard peripheral, you can use one of your plastic guitars to simulate it. If you have the keyboard, each lane will be mapped to your C to G keys.

More importantly I would say is the keyboard’s “Pro” mode, where the keyboard peripheral comes into its own. Giving you two octaves worth of notes, the keyboard’s Pro mode is pitch accurate and will offer one octave on screen at a time. Admittedly this does mean it will jump around a bit, but if you take the notes away with you to a piano, you’ll genuinely be playing that piece of music, which in my opinion, is quite mind-blowing. Learning an instrument through a game? Incredible.

Pro mode isn’t just confined to the keyboard either, oh no and every instrument, whether it be drums (with additional cymbals), vocals (fully pitch accurate) and of course, the guitar – which can be a proper guitar that is both amplifier and Rock Band compatible – will be supported. It does require purchasing new instruments though and as well as the drums with extra cymbals, the keyboard, there are also the Pro Guitars that come in two flavours: the Fender Mustang: a button based controller with 102 buttons and six strings and is a great in between for Rock Band players and guitar playing wannabes who haven’t mustered the confidence to make the step just yet; and the Squire Stratocaster by Fender, which is a fully functional 22 fret, real wooden guitar with built in technology in the neck that knows where your hands are and which string you’re strumming. Impressive! How does it work on screen though? Well, it’s your traditional Rock Band setup, but with the game giving you a string and a fret number instead – so the A string on the third fret.

Again, it’s fully pitch accurate and once you plug the Stratocaster into an amp, it’s a proper guitar. Yes, a real guitar! That means skills learnt when playing songs on your guitar within the confines of Rock Band can transfer to the actual guitar when you hook up your amp  - of course, you need to remember the notes or chords from the note chart. It’s the bridge between real music and music games which truth be told, signifies the next big step. Take that one Noel Gallagher!

Sounds complicated, right? Well, yes, with the Stratocaster especially, you are effectively playing a real life instrument and playing actual music – although two octaves on a keyboard won’t allow you to really simulate a proper chord and harmony piece. Thankfully Pro mode doesn’t drop you in at the deep end though (if you don’t want it to that is) and you can choose Pro mode on easy and it’ll select key notes instead – while staying pitch accurate of course – and ease you into the whole experience.

If the small tweaks to the Rock Band franchise weren’t enough to persuade you to part with your cash this holiday period, I have two words for you: “keyboard,” and “pro.”

Who said the music genre couldn’t innovate, huh? Here’s some humble pie. Eat it! Eat it!!! EAAATTTT ITTTT!!

Rock Band 3 is heading your way in holiday 2010.

I have to say that RB seems to be taking a bigger step in the right direction tha GH. Most of the tweeks were already included in GH5 tough (not counting pro and keyboard of course). My two biggest fears are that the song list could be... a little limited with the keyboard and the prices. Honestly i'd rather play metal than elton john tunes but I guess it's just taste. The bundle will probably cost something like $250 with the keyboard and if the pro guitar thing is anyhting decent it could be an additional 250-500 bucks. With all these good games coming out this year I don't think i can afford this and I might just stay with guitar hero. GHWOR has a really good setlist so far.

Still, the game is a must buy, but maybe not the new guitar and drums, as aweome as the new features sound I doubt I could afford it.

I really don;t like the six string controller idea! but the keyboard and pro drums could be great!

I personally think there should be a well defined line between games and reality! (nobody wants a shooter where your dead with one shot)

I will NOT be forking out hundreds for a guitar! (I already have one and the best part of rockband is that it is not real) Thank god you can still play it normally!! :) :) :)

Guys, just buy the real instruments. You can get an entry level guitar and amp these days for about £120. (thats less than the fucking full plastic package!!) it really isn't hard at all to play the majority of rock songs minus the solos :/

can't wait for all the youtube shitheads to think they're top shit now for mastering their spoonfed musical 'talents'

The keyboard is an absolutely idiotic as well as Pro-Guitar. I think at that point, you should buy a real guitar. Pro-drums? Absolutely amazing idea. I do think that my biggest worry is how I absolutely loathe most of the songs on the main Rock Band 2 set list, as well as RB 1. I have a huge taste in music, but please no more crap like "PSYCHO KILLER."

@#28 & #31 - RTFA!!

I'll cherry pick some stuff for you because 1,000 words is obviously too much to handle...

"Wooden guitar" that plugs into an amp and be used as a proper guitar.

"Fully pitch accurate"... and note accurate!

Also... And paragraph 2.

Thanks... I guess...

I play guitar, but unlike many other guitar players, I don't hate on music games. I actually think the pro mode guitar seems a lot of fun. The only bad thing is the large pricetag, but when the controller doubles as a real guitar, it's the price you have to pay.

Already have the RB2 drums with Madcatz Dual Cymbal extension, so i'm good there.

All i'll have to do is buy the keyboard. Then the guitar when it goes down in price.

I mean, I love these games, but they're just eating at money and it's ridiculous.

I already have an actual guitar now, so I'm learning with that. I admit that it'd ease you into it with a game or whatever as compared to trying to find good guitar tabs/trying to learn by ear/etc. But I don't know, it's still way too much money to throw at it when it's still just a game.

@33 - I read though the article. You make it sound like a real guitar takes 1000s of hours to get good with, yet virtual guitars take 15 mins. I guarantee players of this 'pro' mode will sink hundreds of hours into this bloody thing to get to expert difficulty, only to learn a few chords. Why not just buy the real thing? This is taking the 'virtual' play too far.

I think the price for the squier strat (the realistic pro guitar) is probably going to be $150 or $200 max. It shouldn't be too expensive since it's a Squier guitar, and pretty much all they add is the thing that knows which note your playing. It could be $300 though, if they decide that they are marketing it towards the hardcore RB fans (those who would buy an ION drum set).
I wonder how much a pro Drum set would cost though...I would really want to try that out.

I think this is a great idea. I've played both series and own most of the games (except some of the band related ones) and I feel this will be a great addition to the series and quite innovative if not prohibitively expensive.

I'd really like to see them stray away from pro mode-centric achievements. Achievements that require you to utilize a specific (and, in this case, likely expensive) controller always seemed to go against Microsoft's "rules" to me.

Ok, awesome on the keyboard, but I'm more concerned about the bands due to said keyboard, and how that aspect will affect me and my choices of songs.

I don't think they're doing a full set SKU this time. The only bundle I know of is the game and keyboard, which most places have listed at $129.99.

@46: So people spending money is bad for the economy? LMAO!

I think this sounds really exciting, really. I only have Guitar Hero games, but I am willing to commit mutiny for this. All I need to know is a release date and the price. ^_^

With everyone thinking that the end of the music game genre was coming, I think Harmonix basically said fuck that shit and by bringing in this pro mode Rock Band will be more than just a game. I know a bunch of people who have gotten into certain kinds of music because they heard it through Rock Band, and now the option is there for people to flat out LEARN how to play because of Rock Band, which I think is absolutely awesome. In 10 years we'll see the first band that learned music from start to finish through Rock Band, and that just blows my mind.

Oh how people can be so narrow minded. "Just buy the real instruments".
If that's the case then go buy a Ferrari and race around the streets at night instead of playing Need for Speed, or join the army instead of playing Call Of Duty. You types of people really annoy me.

On the game itself in agreement with most people about the price, will it be worth it? In terms of innovation I would say its a huge breakthrough in gaming not just the musical genre, keyboards, actual guitars, pitch sensitive singing! All, sounds delightful.

@#62 - Why not buy the real thing? It can be the real thing when you plug it into an amp. It also doubles up as an learning aid when combined with Rock Band. Your logic is flawed on every level.

by spending money you actually help the economy don't even argue with me. I'm taking a political history class right now and the only way to get out is to spend money.

This game is going to be amazing but wheres the pro bass mode because I'm a bassist. Still will get the game with or without pro bass. I will also get GHWOR because it looks like a good game. Plus I have the ion drum set that I got last Christmas.

Damn. Another game on my Christmas list, this could get expensive.

After failing at learning the guitar in real life, this looks more fun and less stressful :)

man, this is impressive. and what is GH doing this year? I heard something to the effect that you use the main characters to battle your way through a story. GH just hopped aboard the FailDozer.

@#81

There's a Pro Bass mode.

Also, the only bundle is the Keyboard Bundle which is $130, not a big deal. The guitars and everything else is separate. But heck if you're cheap and not into innovation or whatever, just get the game for $60.

82: I think the game will be fun, but don't count on it being that much less stressful than learning the real thing... I've tried (and failed) to learn the real thing, so I'm not just flapping my gums. I'll definitely be buying this, along with the pro guitar, in an attempt to learn, but I'm certainly expecting a hell of a challenge.

If they don't include a Yes song I'm going to cry (well not really). Nothing could beat having Close To The Edge as the last song in the game, NOTHING I TELL YOU!!!
