Call of Duty Map Packs Pass More Than 20 Million Sold
Written By
View author's profile

During the quarter ending June 30th, Activision reportedly shifted more than 20 million units of its Call of Duty map packs, generating massive additional revenue on top of the millions of copies of the hugely successful series it has also sold to date

Both the Stimulus Package and more recently released Resurgence Map Pack have continued the ongoing success of Call of Duty, which Activision has labelled "the number one best-selling first-person action franchise in the US and Europe". This success has prompted Acti CEO Bobby Kotick to look at formulating other methods for monetising billions of hours of online CoD multiplayer.

"The Call of Duty franchise is unique in the world of entertainment and delivers one of the best multiplayer experiences ever," stated Kotick. "We are thrilled to deliver to fans exciting and engaging content that has the intensity they have come to expect from the franchise."

While rumours that the series would be going pay-to-play proved untrue, there may yet be plans to introduce a premium multiplayer service that would offer up optional extras at an additional cost.

So they still charge us £12+ for each map pack, when they're rubbish anyway, I've bought both of them to play with friends, but I wouldn't of bought them if I knew they we're going to be like that.

All i can say is well done activision, you cant blame them for putting the price up when every single 12 year old that plays this 18+ game is stupid enough to buy them yet still stupid enough to play it....Hopefully other developers such as dice and bioware e.g companys that dont just think of the $ sign wont look too much into this and start to put prices up. 5 maps? 2 from the old CoD (shud be free) for what was it 1200? thats the same price as battlefield 1943 and that game is by far better than MW2 imo.

Why do people want to get noobtubed / care package glitched in a different enviroment for 1200m$? when you cud have the likes of castle crashers, splosion man, shadow complex for less /equal to the price? It astounds me

WOW! So this proves theres 20 million kids with rich parents!

If they made it half the price, they would have sold 100 million - Great selling tactics Activision, when are companies going to realise that more is sometimes less...

I will tread very carefully around future Activision Releases as they seem to be tainting the 'Gaming experience' even more than microsoft!!

This isn't right, I have read by multiple sources that it's spread over the whole Call of Duty franchise that obviously includes Call of Duty, 2, 3, 4 and WAW..

Kotaku, for example, states this too..

The people who bought those are tools.

Modern Warfare 2 = 60$ assuming you bought the non-limited editions + 15$ a piece for both Map Packs = 90$ and if you were dumb enough to give someone 1600MP for a 10th Prestige hacked lobby your total comes up to 110$ wasted dollars, multiply that by a 20 million and that's not counting the extra 20$ - 50$ for Limited and Prestige Editions.

I bought the 1st map pack and I didn't feel I got close to my money's worth so I traded in CoD not long after. No new guns or attachments and not even a single new perk!? Fuck that! Worst 1200 points ever spent.

It really is shocking to think they made so much from such little content. I just hope that other companies don't follow suit...

anyone ever check out the average COD players gamercard half those people have under 1000 gamerscore because all they play is call of duty and its hard for me to catogorize them as true gamers or just fad follwers...... and thats why we cant stand up to the over priced content. i would have bought it at 800 points but they did 12 cause they can and knew everyone would buy it. not to give stupid ideas but they couldve charged 1600 and all those people wouldve still bought.

@ 43 - Somebody needs to take math class again. Halo maps NEVER exceeded 800 MSP and regardless, if you buy ODST, you get em all for the retail game price.

Oh and COD recycled maps from it's previous entry (unoriginal much?) and still charged excess for 'em.

It was 1200 because it had 5 maps! I dont think anyone understands that they were charging LESS per map in each map pack. IW charged 240 per map, and every single map pack had guranteed 2 great maps since they brought back from COD4, IW and Treyarch suck at making NEW map pack maps. COD4's was terrible, Stimulus was ok, and Resurgence was ok,but neither of the maps had good NEW maps.
Everyone thats is ripping on COD's uniques, you do realize that COD COMPLETELY made COD WAW, which was horrendous, and BFBC 1 and 2 sucked, but if it wasnt for COD, then Medal of Honor would have been set in the past, and not have the COD and BF like shooting system? IW COMPLETELY redefined the 1st person shooting game genre. (Except for Halo, but that is a different kind of shooter.)

Why all the hate on CoD. If you don't wanna play it then don't. Just stick to your halo, battlefield, and what ever game you want. Yes MW2 mp is/was broken but I just quit the matches those people are cheating in and move on. You should do the same and MOVE on. Can't wait for MoH and reach to come out so then I can read on how everyone wishes that the little kids and modders/hackers would go back to MW2. Oh btw @48 I'm your average "cod player" and I broke 1000 gamerscore 5yrs ago. Why can't we all get along. Its all entertainment that's the main reason I read this site to be entertained by people who "THINK" they know what's going on.

It's sickening when you can pick up quality DLC for next to nothing (L4D DLC etc.) to know that these are selling, I bought the first map pack and would love to get the second but I cannot even get into a game anymore! I literally have to find a recent player who is online and joinable AND playing the same game mode I want to play! To even consider asking for €15 euro for three maps is dispicable!

I have nothing against the studio/franchise for liking money. Just think that there marketing staff are idiots.

I mean seriously, If there was a free map-pack released for anyone who played a certain amount of hours, It would go down very well! It would get people to play more and reward the loyal players, making them very happy campers

@ #51:
I'm not a genius but I know basic math...
MW2 1200MPS/5 Maps = 240MPS per map. X2 map packs = 2400MSP
Halo 3 800MSP/3 maps = 266.67MPS per map. X4 map packs = 3200MSP
Difference: Halo 3 you get 3 more maps for an additional 1200MSP and one of them was free.

MW2 had 4 throwback maps.
Halo 3 had 5.

ODST's map disc was put in to justify the $60 price tag... so it's about a valid argument as trying to use the GOW2 "all fronts" bundle as a price scale.

MW is not revolutionary for having a modern setting lol. Plenty of other games obviously had that. It's revolutionary for introducing a shitty experience system with unlockables that greatly hinders the experience but satisfies all the people who suck at video games by making them feel like they are accomplishing something. I don't even understand why anyone wastes their time playing this glitchy as fuck game anyway.

I didnt buy them, btw medal of honour was a way better fps then cod originally, then cod muscle their way in copying medal of honour with the whole ww2 setting and cods multiplayer isnt unique the whole create a class thing came from somebody modding cod 3 on the pc. Theres no original thought anymore with this company or companies that are similar. As soon as one company decides to make changes to setting or how their game works every other company decides to. bfbc1 was modern war and because activision knew everyone was bored of ww2 they decided to copy and now moh is copying. why dnt all the little kids pick up a good game and play it. bioshock had a great multiplayer and an amazing story. how about alone in the dark, enchanted arms, lost odyssey or gun. They may be old but still amazing. Or maybe go back even further to games like SWKOTOR one and two.

to be honest i dnt actually care who copied who i was giving a reason how its not unique and i dnt care about crap football games that they bring out every year which is wat cod is becoming same old boring shit in a different setting least other games are actually unique and i wouldnt say crackdown copied gta just because they are both sandbox. your abit stupid if you think that and the reason i put moh and cod together because they bring out games side by side for ages and pretty much on the same consoles. what was counterstrike on the pc only. wow great.

also counterstrike was only a mod when moh 1 was a fully functioning game on the ps1. thank you. same year. just counterstrike was a mod in october 1999 and moh came out in november 1999.

I like MW2, I played the hell out of it. But I recently started playing BFBC2 and that's a whole different FPS imo. I must say I'm enjoying it. AND I'm still playing MW2. While MW2 = arcade FPS, BFBC2 is more tactical and bigger. I'm looking forward to play Halo Reach, Mafia 2, Crysis, Portal 2... If you're a true gamer, you play and enjoy (almost) everything and don't try to be a fanboy for any game. Each game has it's uniqueness to it...

True, Activision wants $$$ but so does any company..... My respect goes out for all the devs!

awwwwwww you are abit stupid thanks for proving it. i dnt care wat u meant i was just trying to prove things follow after each other nothings original. u could say the whole modern warfare era came from the old helicopter games that i used to play on the sega megadrive. theres nothing unique about most games. granted the create a class was quite unique but they cant say they developed that or created it. they might have introduced it well done but that was cod 4 not modern warfare 2 and their franchise isnt unique when theres so many fps games out their.

@78 see this is what i am on about stop playing the same old crap over and over again play somthing different and hes right about people should stop fanboying everything. In the end their all just games and if your sad enough and actually believe that its alrite to mod and hack consoles an games and boost your rank or w.e ppl do these days then you must have been dropped on your head. everyone of you who hacked your rank or modded your gamescore or lag switch or have a modded controller are all pathetic and arent any better then the little 9 year old who scream and shout in multiplayer lobbies because their parents dont pay any attention to them and let them do it.

To those that bad mouth all the people who bought the map packs. There are games that you like to play and you are satisfied with the content and then you have your (for example 3) favorite games where you just buy anything. And I am sure everyone here has bought one or two pieces of dlc for a game just because the dlc was part of their favorite game.

And for a company like activision it is normal to sell the map pack for 1200MPS. If a game like CoD constantly is in the top selling charts you just go and try for the first dlc a high price, if that sells good too, well you charge the same amount of money for the second dlc. Big publishers don't care about our opinion. You buy the dlc so you like it. That's what the numbers of sold units/dlc tell them and the first look for feedback is always at the numbers.

This is a no brain er that it sold 20 million I am just surprised it didn't do a little better like 50 million sold but whatever it is a blast well majority rules but I guess there are always going be those whine babies who think it shouldn't have done this well and all I can go and say is QQ.

I dont understand why people would pay 1200 MSP to be camped on in this maps...the amount of camping that happends in this game is just incredible...and some of the perks make the gameworse...call me a n00B all you want to but taking out Jougernaut was so dumb...becase they still left stoppin power...WTF? They made the game even more unbalanced when they decided to add a camper's delight the heart monitor and the thermal scope...they have two map packs each at a price tag of 1200 MSP..they are overcharging the comsumer...I love Call of Duty and I just hate when developers overcharge for their products...especially when their products are broken..like the online in COD:MW2

btw to anyone that didnt quite understand they sold 20 million units of all cod map packs in Q2 of this year thats a 3 month window ending 30th of june. that doesnt mean it was just modern warfare 2 map packs that includes the waw ones and all the others.

Also @24 activision get all the money from dlc and the games that they sell. Infinity ward and treyach get what activision give them for developing the game.

#82 Please stop posting about pointless crap, this is about COD map packs it has nothing to do with hacking/modding/Alone in the dark.

As for the stupid comment? was that due to my typo on eunuch? I could have kept the logography as it was as im sure you would have been clueless as to the meaning / spelling of the word anyhow.

Who are you to tell people to stop playing MW2? Then bitching at people who boost there rank when its not much different to boosting for cheevos that many on here are guilty of myself included.

On topic as i said before I dont blame them for seting the prices as high as they did i only blame the people who bought them.

@87 agreed

The most balanced games activision have published in the cod franchise was cod 1 and 2 because they didnt rush them out every year with a 2 year development cycle it started to go down from there with abit over powering in cod 3 and cod 4 but they had pretty good multiplayers not to many glitches. it all went down hill when they decided from then on out to bring out a game every year and all they were thinking about was money. which they can do but it was to late before anyone noticed that with every new game they bring out more problems would arise, you would think that with mw2 being the same as cod 4 apart from som extras and beta graphics and so all the glitches they fixed with cod 4 would be fixed in mw2 and so all infinity ward would have to do is just test all the new stuff they added in. but because they had 2 years to make it. they didnt test it properly and with every new update that they dnt test properly more and more glitches come.

Just imagine how much money they made off of map packs before Q2 2010. They had about two years to do so with Call of Duty 4's Variety Map pack and World at War's Map Packs 1-3.

@89 y dnt you read all my comments properly and then go look at yours and what this article is actually about. its got nothing to do with the price of the dlc. its all about how many units they sold. so your still making ppl think your stupid by putting:

On topic as i said before I dont blame them for seting the prices as high as they did i only blame the people who bought them.

its not on topic. i am generalizing about this game and about ppl comments further up.

and i was saying stop playing the same crap over and over again and that would stop all the bitching going on in the comments and it would pull activision off their high horse.

i knew you wrote comment 24 and you must be dumb to think treyarch actually get the money made from their games and dlc that get sold which they dont.

i can comment what i like and all of these comments are mine and mine alone. you take them how you want and your just making yourself look like a complete knob. you must be one of those little 9 or 12 year olds as you said further up (because that was on topic) that cries and shouts in the lobbies.

And i know what your going to do next through every comment of mine taking every little spelling mistake and trying to say i'm stupid because of that. which i actually don't care so don't waste your time.

dear Activision,

your game was terrible. the online was a sham. campaign was good. map packs were bogus, making us pay for 2 maps that we paid $80 for already. go back to how you constructed COD4. that's why MW2 sold. COD4 created it all and made the franchise of modern warfare. go back to COD4's online experience and make it like that. it should be classic. and come on, enough with noob stuff. i thought Call of Duty game were suppose to be competitive? how is it fair that a 10th prestige level 70, is still equal to a level 1. i have traded my MW2 game in. i wont be buying mw3 until the glitches are fixed and it actually takes skill to kill someone. thanks.

i said im possibly wrong but dont treyarch..... and i think youll find your wrong this comment is about BOTH pricing of the dlc and the amount sold otherwise there would be no reason for everyone to mention the price.

Stop playing the same crap over and over again? Im sorry but i was under the impression that multiplayer games such as CoD were developed for repetetive use.

As for my comment "On topic as i said before I dont blame them for seting the prices as high as they did i only blame the people who bought them." I clearly state both price and units so if your going to try and nit pick try it abit better.

Well done.

I've not bought them because of the price, and I told myself that I'd buy them when they get cheaper.

But now I don't even play that game any more. So I shall never be buying the maps. Oh well, whatever.

It's no skin off MW2 back if one person doesn't buy their DLC. It's price should cover me in no time.

Enjoy it, if you still do. Peace.

Say what you like about CoD: MW2, the matchmaking pisses all over the likes of Halo 3 and GoW2.

Also, no, not a fanboy - COD: MW2 has overpriced maps when compared to the GoW2 pack of 19 for only 800 points, or the 13 Halo 3 maps being bundled with ODST.

The fact that there is 100+ comments in a day proves the franchise's success.

Love how people say they "didn't fuel the machine" but admitted they bought the game itself. TOO LATE.

Big THANK YOU to Activision for making the best game ever, Call of Duty 4, and a great game, Modern Warfare 2.

Still yet to buy a single CoD DLC. And I won't either. I think it's unethical to sell a game for £45 new. Then 6 months later, release another version WITH the maps for the same £45. Both prices end up going down at the same rate, but one has the maps. Bad stuff man..

#17 you are retarded to bad there is no more care package glitch stop crying because you are trash at the game BFBC:2 has more problems. Also other companies charge 800 Microsoft points for 3 maps Activision gives you 5 maps for 1200 Microsoft points so on other maps you spend 400 Microsoft points on one other map what would you rather have 5or6 maps but the 6 map are 400 points more.

Here's the deal. I'll give you a third of an already finished game for the price of $60. Then, after a month or so, i'll upload the remaining pieces of the game for you to buy. This was our intentional purpose but we'll call it "DLC" as if it was extra material we made after the game was done. This way, I/We get far more money from you. LOL

Some of us adults that have a decent paying job, a morgage, three kids, utility bills, and everything else that comes with living, which is the smart buy? It's basic economics, but then you have to actually have at least a GED to understand I guess. So let me explain it to YOU Idiots, $15 for new online maps or $60 for a new game, yeah those that bought it are really stupid. How many copies of Bad Company 2 were sold? Was it 20 million? So for a kid or an adult, for 10-20 more hours of gameplay, which is a smarter choice? Now since most people here are out for the gamer points I don't expect you to understand.

If $15 helps fund those that made the game and make it so we have another great game in the future, then I'm glad to have made the purchase.

So before you call 20 million people idiots, be sure you know them.

@1-129 get off your high horses. You wanna ban DLC on principle? Fine, don't enjoy it. No need to judge everyone because activision is so money hungry and 20 million people enjoy a good game. Simple supply and demand. At least 20 million people represent a demand for the best FPS experience and find that COD is that.

@130 lol your an idiot. infinity ward made mw2, not activision. they just paid for it. if you havn't been keeping up on current events, you may not know that infinity ward is pretty much defunct now so you are not funding a continuing franchise, but you are giving money to a greedy publisher who will simply put that money to other uses, and not on another rehash of what you think was a "great game" (lol). Respawn (formerly infinity ward) seems like they're trying to get control over the modern warfare brand, but they forget that modern warfare is a Call of Duty, which activision owns. so if another CoD:MW game is in the pipes, which i doubt it is, it will probably be really similar to what we have now (yay?) I'm not sure i get your BF2 arguement...you say $15 for new online maps OR $60 for new game refering to BF2...but you had to buy MW2 first so MW2 is at $90 while BF2 sits at $60...where does the 10-20 more hours of gameplay come in??? please don't say the new maps...in the end though, enjoy your old maps

@132 franchise=COD. so he is funding a franchise regardless of who makes the games for it. DLC is the equivalent of refueling a game. Spending another what's it $10? $15? for DLC to get extra miles out of a game you already own instead of paying $55-60 for a new release (or used copy of said) is a potentially sound investment option. Even more so if you enjoy the game you currently own. Or maybe have a bunch of friends you play that game with online and if you're the only one without the map you're literally holding your friends back. I mean there are more scenarios than, "I LOVE FEEDING GAME COMPANIES!!!"

@133 you type as though CoD and BF are the exact same games. maybe buying some new maps, and a couple old ones can let someone get some extra mileage, but if your driving a toyota tercel...do you really want the extra mileage or would you just bone up and buy a new car...since everyone loves complaining about the price and how it's so expensive, and then other people counter about saying they have a job and a life blah blah, if they aren't so poor, what's the problem with buying a new or used game of another title with a multiplayer that's actually fair and cheat free. BUT if someone like you or #130 enjoys this game, enjoys paying $15 for 3 new maps, enjoys all the perks, then there is nothing more to say, but to enjoy your old maps and modded lobbies...PLUS, Infinity Ward MADE this game to WHAT IT IS TODAY. so if you expect the continually fund this CoD franchise, just don't expect much else to change in MW3...it seems activision already has their recipe for success...

I very rarely buy DLC anyway so there's no way I'm going to give them $15 for a map pack when they won't even fix broken things like nuke boosting in free for all.

what I find funny here is in this thread people are griping about how bent out of shape they are about old maps from previous games.

Where as Halo 3 did that with 5 of their maps (1 originally with the release, 1 free on Bungie Day, 2 in a single pack, and 1 with the final map pack)

Now if you go over to the story about the new maps revealed for Halo Reach... 2 of the 3 maps are remakes from Halo 2... and people literally sound like they are creaming their shorts.

@130 I'm not judging. The value isn't there. If the packs were priced better for what they are worth it wouldn't be a problem. There is nothing wrong with people buying the packs for a game they enjoy. They should just be getting better value for their money.

Honestly its the gamers fault if they feel outraged by the price of the maps, I mean if you truly are against the price don't buy the maps, but hey, you wanna be a pansy and not stand up for what you believe that's your fault now.

I'm sure if Activision saw a decline in the number of DLC being purchased they would have changed their marketing strategy, but people still bought it, I wouldn't be surprised if they charge 1600 and an "optional patch" next time around, people would still buy.

I for one am glad I stood up for what I believed and didn't purchase those maps.

In Halo3, you payed for alot more then you get in MW2, In the map packs you got multi player, forge and theatre, in MW2 you get just the multi player, yet they charge more. You could customise the Halo3 maps, rather then be stuck with the same old thing, e.g. Sandbox.

I didn't buy any of these packs, I've seen them played, but there's nothing there that really intrests me that the other maps haven't done multiple times over.

@146: That could be the first reasonably valid argument EVER for this topic. And not a sputter of fanboy-ism in there at all.

Bottom line is map for map the Halo maps are more expensive no matter how you look at it. You don't really need theater for MW2 because you're not doing all kind of crazy super soldier tank surfing stuff you want to show off later.

Forge would not fair very well in MW2 either. The levels are too big, and designed for large groups of players. Then on top of it you don't really feel like you're accomplishing anything by not earning experience to unlock stuff so you don't have just a handful of guys sitting around with a few 360's hooked together having a small game amongst friends. In MW2 if you are not earning EXP then you're just wasting time.

But then again Halo maps had achievements, MW2 does not even have multiplayer achievements.

So any chance everyone can just agree that while the halo maps are more expensive, you get what you pay for? ...a little more.

Kinda getting bored of everyone complaining about every possible piece of news on this website now.
"pfft who cares about [insert well established game here], they are [A rip off, shit, gay, overpriced, for noobs]"

All of you need to get over yourselves and learn that games are supposed to be different, if every game was like MW2, or Halo 3 or BF:BC then there would be no variety and you would probably complain about that.
Grow up.

This man speaks the truth. Give him a medal somebody. Reminds me of my last few years of high school when all "too cool for gaming" kids started playing GOW and COD. They aren't gamers, they are fools who dance under the strings
of the system.

Viva La Resistance!

Now that I've got that out of my system, who the hell bought these packs? Sold my MW2 months and months ago..

WRT Halo 3 maps being more expensive - 13 maps for;(0 [Heroic x3] + 160 [Legendary x3] + 0 [Cold Storage x1] + 400 [Mythic x3] + 800 [Mythic II x3]) = 1,360 for 13, so just over 100 points per map, 140 points cheaper per map than CoD: MW2 *right now*

Perhaps they (Halo 3 maps) were more expensive on release, but they are certainly not now.

@142 I hear what your saying. Some people don't find the value and just don't buy it. But then you have other people blaming those that did buy for all the DLC problems by calling them idiots. I enjoy all the COD games, expect for COD 3. The $15 for the maps isn't that bad in my opinion. Shit I waste $15 on lunches, dinners, and a couple drinks at the bar. Those forms of enjoyment only last an hour at most. $15 for the maps offer much more enjoyment, in my opinion. Has anyone gone to the movies lately? Talk about a rip off. $3.50 for a fountain drink, $2 for a box of candy, $10-15 for a movie ticket. I choose to waste my money on these maps.

@157 are you really trying to compare current prices? seriously? Anyone that was going to buy the Halo 3 maps bought them within a month of them coming out... at full price. Ever since ODST hit & came with the maps on a disc people would be bordering on retarded to actually buy them from the marketplace anymore unless they were free.

Seriously... you're comparing apples & oranges at this point. Also it's kind of arbitrary to use that argument for a game that's almost 3 years old vs. a game less than a year old.

but honestly #158 is spot on... people spend money of tons of stupid crap so why does everyone get bent out of shape about game dlc?

@159 Yes, yes I am - in the same way all new MMORPGs that launch are compared to WoW as it is today, not when it launched, so should all DLC maps for popular MP games be compared - if you disagree, that's fine - there's no right or wrong opinion here, it's just where I stand.

I have to agree, it's not the most current comparison.

*shrug*

hmm, 20'000'000 that's a lot of people who've had their brains removed! they must have, because these maps are the WORST DLC i've ever heard of.

heres the sales pitch: do you want a few new places to get noob-tubed/glitched to death on?

and my answer: no thanks, i'll KEEP my £9.99 (£19.98 if you want BOTH map packs!!) and get another game, or some DLC that is WORTH it...

"The Call of Duty franchise is unique in the world of entertainment and delivers one of the best multiplayer experiences ever," stated Kotick.
Hmm really, I disagree. I don't think that a bunch of 8 year olds sitting in corners with Umps and Noob Tubes that superglue there ballsacks to the ground and talk shit is the "best." Once Halo Reach comes out I will never play this broken game ever again.
Oh yeah eat shit Activision!

a shit price for some shit maps for a shit game aimed at people with very very very very little taste in gaming.

didnt even think of buying this game. and never will (might buy it just to attach to some fireworks).

every single wii game, 360 game and xbox game in my house is better than this shit (yes, even fuzion frenzy 2).

come on IW and activision, show your 'followers' some respect (bungie for example).
