During the quarter ending June 30th, Activision reportedly shifted more than 20 million units of its Call of Duty map packs, generating massive additional revenue on top of the millions of copies of the hugely successful series it has also sold to date
Both the Stimulus Package and more recently released Resurgence Map Pack have continued the ongoing success of Call of Duty, which Activision has labelled "the number one best-selling first-person action franchise in the US and Europe". This success has prompted Acti CEO Bobby Kotick to look at formulating other methods for monetising billions of hours of online CoD multiplayer.
"The Call of Duty franchise is unique in the world of entertainment and delivers one of the best multiplayer experiences ever," stated Kotick. "We are thrilled to deliver to fans exciting and engaging content that has the intensity they have come to expect from the franchise."
While rumours that the series would be going pay-to-play proved untrue, there may yet be plans to introduce a premium multiplayer service that would offer up optional extras at an additional cost.
