Top Spin 4
No Kinect Support or Individual Online Doubles for Top Spin 4

View author's profile

Speaking to X360A at a recent Top Spin 4 event, 2K Czech President, Stephane Dupas, told us that the upcoming Top Spin 4 would not function with Kinect or even include the fan-requested individual console doubles.

In iterations gone-by, Top Spin’s online doubles was only playable if you had your doubles partner sat next to you on the couch. Individual play was not permitted, and according to Dupas, things aren’t set to change in the upcoming sequel.

“The thing you really want to understand is, we care a lot about the technical performance, you know, we don’t want lag to be disturbing the result of the game,” said Dupas.

“From the test we had, four consoles, with the sort of gameplay and the faster volleys, we were not happy with the result. Depending on the lag, you would win or lose. This is not something we were happy with. So for this time: Top Spin 4, online doubles, two consoles.”

Can we expect the implementation of it in future iterations? If the words of Dupas are anything to go by, don’t hold your breath.

“Well, for us I would not say that this is one of the main priorities for our development. We’re always trying, one Top Spin after another, to make the gameplay more interesting and to push the visuals. I think this keeps us busy enough.”

To rub a little more salt into the wounds of Xbox 360 owners, although Top Spin 4 will support the PlayStation Move controller, Dupas told us that Kinect would not be supported.

“The difficulty with Kinect, how are you going to move your character around? With the motion controller, you can move with the thumbstick and do the shots with the gesture, which is quite nice. Kinect, it was difficult for us to find a good way to move your character around.”

Is this controllerless motion capture device all it’s cracked up to be then, if it’s asking questions that certain developers can’t answer, or is it just that 2K Czech aren’t the right people to answer them?

I, myself, would have thought that moving around in the game space would have worked, oh you know, like a certain Kinect Sports table tennis title.

Top Spin 4 is set for a March release. In the meantime, why not have a read of our wonderful Top Spin 4 preview and don’t forget to check back later for our full interview with Dupas.

Shame on the Kinect. Shocking on the doubles. Been after that since TS1 on the original Xbox.

There is a much bigger playing area on a tennis court than a ping-pong table, kinect just cant do rapid movements which is what this requires. This shows that kinect will always be nothing more than a childs toy, if a tennis game cant incorporate it what chance do we have of seeing a AAA title attempt it, my kids have one and the lag between when you (example) jump and the character jumps is nothing less than terrible.

Sad that 2K couldn't figure out how to do Kinect, but Sega has announced it for Virtua Tennis 4. I know which one I'll be buying.

hopefully it's a software issue that can be improved with regard to lag and space required to play... but, not holding my breath.

Let's not all just right off the kinect. This isn't the end game of the kinect by any means. It's just one developer's take on it on this specific title and time. We'll see how everyone utilizes the hardware in the future. Keep an open mind on new things and give it time just like everything else.

To be honest, 2K Czech don't seem too bothered about pleasing their fans and pushing the boundaries of their game, like the individual console doubles, only better visuals.

If they won't put in something requested since the first game, what chance was there of them making it Kinect compatible?

That's a shame. I was never really into any sports games, but I thought this would be pretty fun with Kinect.

If the lag is a problem, how about Y'know, doing your job and improving the engine or netcode to make sure it can work, instead of making what will be most likely a cut and paste version of the last game, with a slightly different roster and a few tacked on "exciting features"?

Some lazy bitched at 2K I guess. hey more power to them, maybe they will be closing down after this game too^^ I know that if you don't online coop in a game like this that is big downside. This isn't Virtua Tennis for Dreamcast and year 2000...

After MLB 2K10 I won't buy another 2K game again anyways. That game was the most unfinished piece of crap to ever hit retail stores. They were lazy and achievements are still glitched. Hell, I'm still waiting for them to patch NHL 2k7.

Kinect games CAN do this easly! YOU move around! are these developers lazy, idiots or both. just look at soccer. see how much room is needed to save a courner shot. i own kinect day 1.

to move swing & such is all you. these guys dont get it. its simple, you track the player. what the player does the charecter on screen does! well no kinect = no sale here. way better tenis games than this. table tennis + soccer = full tennis court!

I'm more insulted by the lack of online doubles over the lack of Kinect support.

It seems crazy that the game wont be compatible with Kinect, when Micro$oft have sold 8 million of the things. Are these games companies fuckin stupid or what. I will get Virtua Tennis 4 instead, like 8 million other people will lol.

@7

I think this is a sign of a new controller coming into the picture. Something that fits directly in hand, yet can be controlled with only one thus giving you the ability to move about, etc. Or even have it for two hands, left analog on the left, right on the right, and your buttons and triggers on the actual item it self. Thus allowing for games that let you use both controllers and kinect with minimal hassle.

^ Defeats the purpose of kinect, after all their slogan is 'you are the controller'

Kinect is destined to fail, I've said it from the day project natal was announced, I play games to relax and have fun not get sweaty and break lamps unless I play FIFA then my gamer rage kicks in.

The device is fair enough for party games and that's it, the developers aren't stupid hence the massive kinect support.......... No one will take the first step into implementing it look at fable they pulled out now this, I can only imagine the amount of money it must cost to even plan having kinect in your game let alone programming it.

How I love being correct.

P.s

I will buy kinect in December most likely as there will be countless in the bargain bin :)

Doesn't mean you can't combine the two regardless. Black and white thinking accomplishes nothing, therefor your point is rather pointless on that front, unfortunately.

The concept behind kinect is not just hands free, it's motion tracking. Your movements. It's you, it's you who is actually playing the game, it brings us closer to the concepts of virtual reality.

And on that note, I am not a party gamer. I am a hardcore gamer since the NES days, RPG's being my main preference, however, it never hurts to do something new. And the fact I can exercise and entertain myself at the same time as much as I want outweighs other options. Plus how many other ways can you jump 4 feet in the air and severely sprain your ankle?

I had no idea this many people even cared about tennis. How many of you are from the US? If you are, I have not met you. I'm not hating on tennis or anything either, just not interested in it.

Microsoft have to release Wii/Move controller too, that way you have all the technology on one console. If you know what I mean.

#21 Well you arent correct are you really as Virtua Tennis 4 is going to be compatible with connect, and is a far better game than Top Spin anyway.
