Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock
Guitar Hero DLC Comes To An End
Written By
View author's profile

With Activision deciding to can its once glorious Guitar Hero franchise, it seems that this will have a knock-on effect in terms of support for the game. In short, there won't be any add-on tracks coming for Guitar Hero from this day forward.

Activision's social media rep, Dan Amrich tweeted the following earlier: "We will release the previously announced DLC track and mix packs for February, but we will not be able to release new DLC," which pretty much says it all, really.

So, no more Guitar Hero and this month's ten-track February Mega Pack will be one of the final doses of DLC released for the game. You can lend your condolences and purchase the DLC pack now for 1440 Microsoft Points. Fare thee well, Guitar Hero!

Rich spelling mistake first paragraph last sentence GUITAR (Guiatr)

Good riddance. Call of Duty will suffer the same fate if they keep pushing them out as fast as they did these GH games.

Activision deserves to suffer as much as possible, but it is unfortunate that the developers and IPs it has control over suffer as well, for they are great ideas and concepts that are being eaten alive by Activision.

Feel bad for all the guys and girls out of a job, but this was inevitable for the franchise based on how Activision have been treating it. Far too many games, with little to no innovation each step along the way. I've always said Rock Band is by far the superior game franchise, and I'll continue to support it as I have been doing from day one of Rock Band 1.

I was a little disappointed with the news of no more Guitar Hero, but I thought hey, they can at least make more DLC/songs available now, and now look. Would've been a good move I think if they kept releasing DLC for it.

This sort of feels like the end of an era - It is fascinating how quickly Guitar Hero became popular and then how suddenly that interest declined over such a short period. Everyone who is saying the same will happen to CoD doesn't realise that the FPS genre is not a niche and has been popular for decades.

Activision are not entirely to blame here they just analysed the market incorrectly - even Rock band which has had a less intense release schedule has dwindled massively. The music rhythm genre was a new beast and one turned out to be a passing fad.

Ah well, GH was practically the only Activision game I bought, seeing as I don't play trash like COD anyway.

Now with them stopping the DLC Activision are just being complete dicks and all you people moaning about the marketplace, stop being so fucking pathetic.

I hope COD dies off soon now, what with all the companies working on it we'll see about 3-4 COD games per year, anyone who buys that utter garbage is an idiot.

See how quickly a phase passes. I love GH and RB but it's time to move on. They didn't revolutionise the genre enough to stay fresh. And itll be nice to see other stuff in the add-on blade.

I always thought Activision was cut throat, but seriously? Abandoning all DLC? Wow...talk about shooting the cow in the neck, then choking its calf before its eyes, and finally continuously kick the dying animal until it passes on. Graphic...yeesh. Well, Harmonix had best be careful, with their current layoffs and likely dwindling budgets, we could have two dead franchises on our hands. Hope not.

I'm sad to see it go, but in all honesty I didn't support em. I got the newest GH game, beat it, then put it away for Rock Band. I never buy GH DLC simply because my RB catalog is far more vast and used much more often.

RIP Guitar Hero, your time has come.

BTW it's funny how in the day they announce the death of Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk, they announce the OFFICIAL beginning of oversaturating COD. Sooo, what are we looking at, 2 more years before COD is dead? I'm calling it now.

Anything that's a gimmick usually just comes and goes. For some it may not die off completely, but the interest becomes greatly diminished.

I have to agree with everyone else in that CoD will most likely feel the wrath of oversaturation too. Hell, I enjoy CoD games, but I'm already starting to get sick of them. I hardly touch Black Ops, I never liked WaW, and I didn't play MW2 as much as I did with MW1. The interest dwindles when its always in your face.

@34, I totally agree.

Unfortunately, I lost interest in Guitar Hero when a) Band play was incorporated. Don't get me wrong, it was a somewhat decent addition, but I preferred solo guitar. I hardly ever played in a band, except for the achievements. However, I'm sure a lot of people welcomed this addition. And b) Not being able to afford a new guitar.

I'm gutted there will be no more GH games from now on, but what can you expect. The cow has run dry. I'll still play GH:Metallica. Just out of curiosity, will this mean server closures as well?

Rock Band was always better.

What Activision should do is put all GH songs on sale at 50 MSP to allow libraries to be increased. Then Activision would make some money before it all ends. Kinda like a closing down sale - everything reduced.

Does this mean the DLC tracks will eventually disappear from XBL?

Activision was horrible and unorganized when it came to a DLC schedule for the music games.

Rock Band did it better than Guitar Hero...I even look at Def Jam Rapstar and Lips on a better schedule. Can't imagine either of those games sold much more than DJ Hero.

Activision somehow managed to mess up Marvel Ultimate Alliance DLC as well...par for the course.

I find this very disappointing. I actually have preferred many of Guitar Hero's dlc selections to Rock Bands which I know is not common. They were able to provide me with several great tracks from Nirvana, Queens of the Stone Age, Marilyn Manson, and even a Chimaira track. They seemed to cater a lot more to my tastes than Rock Band ever has. Don't get me wrong, Rock Band has many great things as well but even when they picked out bands I wanted they only picked the most popular 3 or 4 songs when I personally would like either the album or some of the slightly more obscure songs.

I saw this coming when after GH 3. They strayed to far from the roots of the game, and tried to do to much with it. I haven't personally played any music based games for about a year, so I really have no feeling towards this other than, Activision, you had it coming. Learn from your mistakes, but make sure you do it after you kill off the CoD series.

Wow. I mean WOW! I hates Assivis... I mean ACTIvision before but now! Wow, its like they want to be hated. Theyre kinda like that goth kid on the playground noone likes. I dont see why theyve canned one of thea actual good series for a shi... oh wait I get it now! Theyre money grubbing bastards and dont want to have to pay royalties for all the songs! Ive always been saying Activision are shit but they always say theyre the best! Yeah a company that doesnt pay its employees, sues its rivals for hiring ex-employees and practically tells 90% of its fan base to fuck off! Wow what stand up guys! I really hope CoD and WoW become really unpopular so Assivison are left with fuck! That would be one of the happiest days in my life! That way, games that are ACTUALLY good get some lime light!

@86 WoW,Starcraft and Diablo arent Acitvisions anyway.Blizz should seperate before activision ruin them with a new WoW every year.

OT:Guitar Hero would have been better if it didnt release 4 rubbish games in 09(DJ,Smash Hits,Van Halen,Band Hero).
