Beyond Good & Evil HD Hands-On Preview & HD Gameplay - Reliving a Classic

If there’s one thing the Xbox Live Arcade is beautifully set up for... it’s second chances. After all, everyone in life deserves a second chance, except whoever stole my Cadbury’s Creme Egg out of the fridge the other day. You can burn in hell for all I care... For Ubisoft and Beyond Good & Evil though, this is it. This is the second chance that the original – generally heralded as a true great many years ago – truly deserves. Truthfully though, how many resources are lavished upon and how quickly the already announced Beyond Good & Evil 2 arrives, probably hinges upon its success, so although it might seem like a second chance, it definitely feels like there’s more riding on it this time.

When it comes to the game itself, I suspect there will be two camps of people: camp A who played it many moons ago and are looking forward to the HD remake; and camp B, who missed it the first time around and will be snapping it up this time to see what all the fuss is about. Camp B, by the way, is possibly the size of Africa with a London-esque density of people. In short, not enough people bought it first time around.

If you don’t fit into either of those categories, what the hell is wrong with you? Note: there is technically only two camps of people remaining, camp C, who are those who played it and don’t want to play it again; and camp D, who are those who don’t want to play it at all – both camps should be ushered into the corner and treated like plague victims if that’s the case. Anyway, in order to cater to both camps – the non-plague infested ones, of course – I’ll try and address how it’s aged and how it stands up in HD for camp A; and for camp B, I’ll try and give a little insight into the game’s mechanics and story, and such. Not too much though... you know how we hate spoilers around here. We put them with the plague victims... which is far away from us.

Beyond Good & Evil takes place in the year 2435 on the mining planet of Hillys. Jade, a young photojournalist and our fearless protagonist, along with her boar-like uncle, Pey'j, set off on a journey to uncover the secrets of the invading alien race, the DomZ, and in doing so, uncover the conspiracy of all conspiracies. From a gameplay perspective, in a nutshell Beyond Good & Evil is an action-adventure title with a few puzzles, some third-person hack-n-slash combat, a bit of stealth and plenty of exploration mixed in.

You’ll bounce from mission to mission – racing, playing mini-games and riding around in your hovercraft in between things – working with your uncle to uncover the truth and defeat the evil forces at work. So whether you’re earning pearls to spend on upgrades for your craft, earning credits to buy goodies or snapping photos of the planet’s wildlife, one of Beyond Good & Evil’s strengths lies in its inherent variety.

The upcoming HD version of the 2003 classic though doesn’t mean the upgrades have been confined to just improved character models and detailed textures in its upgraded 1080p glory. Far from it, in fact, the remastered soundtrack is every bit as much as an improvement as the HD visuals are.

From a control standpoint, everything is as you’d expect and from what I remember of how the original handled, the differences between the versions is minimal... which is a good thing. If there is one grumble I do have, based on the code we have our hands-on at the moment, there is no option to invert the vertical axis on its own; instead, you have to invert both the vertical and the horizontal axis together as one, which is a huge pain in the ass for inverts like me. It is a pretty criminal error in this day and age of games, but it’s one that doesn’t really ruin the experience. Luckily.

I suppose the big question is; how has it aged? Well, despite its simple one-button combat and its relatively straightforward puzzles, I’d have to say it’s aged surprisingly well, which if I’m being truthful, actually surprised me quite a bit. The charm of the original though was never its gameplay – although I would argue it was probably ahead of its time – but it was the story, the sense of humour and the great voice acting and chemistry of our dynamic duo. In short, it’s aged pretty damn well.

The new HD version of Beyond Good & Evil on first inspection seems to be a great port of the 2003 classic, boasting solid high-definition visuals and a remastered soundtrack that gives the experience a new lease of life. For a game that is effectively eight-years old to still handle well and not feel totally dated is an achievement in itself. For it to look and sound the part as well, oh well that’s just an added bonus. When you talk about classic titles for each console cycle, Beyond Good & Evil definitely stands out as one of the last generation’s iconic titles and it’s pretty damn good in this generation as well. Do yourself – and everyone who wants a sequel – a favour, and when this drops for 800 Microsoft Points, slap your cash on it.... It’s a steal.

Beyond Good & Evil HD is scheduled for a March 2nd release for 800 Microsoft Points. Take this awfully nice gameplay montage to tide you over until then.

anybody know if they fixed the choppy seizure water that could sometimes happen in caves. Don't know if it was a backwards compatibility issue with the PS3 or what. Kind of funny, but would be nice if it has been remedied. Also, 800 MSP, straight up steal.

I never played the original but a lot of fans seem pleased they're bringing it back so it seems like it's sought after very much so.

I probably won't pick it up mainly because of the above reason and cause I don't tend to buy arcade games, but for fans it seems like an excellent purchase and it looks quite well priced too.

I remember the Christmas this came out. Was moving so would go over to my store to play games on the demo units since none of my systems were set up. After trying this I pushed the hell out of it, especially when it dropped to 20 bucks quickly. It was because of this game that Ubisoft developed its policy to never let their own games compete against each other, and also delay titles away from bigger releases. It may upset people, but better I'm a patient person and in most cases it was worth the wait.

can't you go into your settings on the 360 itself and set the default to Invert Y axis and be able to only invert the Y axis that way?

I know with Dark Messiah of Might and Magic: Elements it didn't have an option to invert the Y axis within the game but I remember finding out how to go to some default control options within your profile on the 360 to invert it

Always say or heard about the original, but it wasn't until 2 years ago that I really got back in to being a REAL gamer. Before it was just the Wii and Gamecube and what few things I could afford. SmashBros, Mario, ect. If it wasn't well known spread by word of mouth to me, I didn't ever get it. But I remember SEEING the original and being curious about it and I've actually played the it, just barely, on the Wii and it looks like a very interesting story and thats what I buy games for. So 10$ for an interesting story with humor that I missed out on? Absolutely! Day 1 buy.

one-button combat? problems with the inverted controls? straightforward gameplay? i'm just going to try the trial first, then we'll see.

i'm also in camp B, sort of. I played the game for 30 mins or so at a friends years back, but I never actually bought it. I remember seeing it and passing on it. It didn't stand out to me, and I don't understand the hype it gets nowadays. These impressions even underwhelmed me a bit, but I still will try the trial.

I definitely be purchasing this game on day one even though I've played through both the PS2 and PC versions. I can't believe this game sold so poorly being release on the PS2, GameCube, XBox and PC. The 360 and PS3 are making it available on a total of 6 systems. Wow.

Ever since i heard about this coming out i have been looking forward to it, i'm deffinitley camp A i remember playing this on the ps2 and it was probably one of my fav games from that generation - and 800msp is a bargain i was expecting it to be at least 1200msp - however disapointed at the date as i read on net that it was launching on 16th or 17th feb - but i can wait. Also would like to see a sequal - so many good game franchises don't get the chance anymore - a series i deeply miss is legacy of kain, although darksiders was a nice remedy too it.

So amazed it was only 800 points, definitely makes is an instabuy even though I have the PC version (it doesn't seem to like multicore systems sadly and setting core affinity is a pain in the arse)

Any word on the remastered soundtrack bring offered as a seperate download? I'm pretty sure the first one was released free and its easily the most insanely varied game soundtrack I've ever heard

This looks like a kid's game, with goofy-looking characters and dialogue, boring combat, and that pig is super-annoying. Now don't get me wrong and start pouncing, really - I'm an open slate here - why should I be interested in this? It's caught my eye due to its cult status, but I just can't make the commitment based on what I've seen, even at $10.

@48 This game is no where near as straight forward as FF13. There are puzzles to solve, driving sections, side missions and areas to explore.
This was one of the best games that I played on PS2 and I hope that after this is released a sequel will finally be made.

Spot on article, Webby. The first 3 paragraphs couldn't be more true.

The day this game releases on the Live Arcade will literally be a historic day for all the Beyond Good & Evil's of the industry. Who knows? With the rumors of the digital release of Oddworld swirling, we may yet witness the revival of the criminally under-appreciated games of yesterday.

It's a good time to be a gamer who remembers how great these games were back when they originally released.

62: From what I understand (and from poking around Wikipedia), BG&E was one of two planned trilogies with gameplay in (sort of) the same vein that Ubisoft started in November 2003. Prince of Persia was the other, and it got much more of the marketing budget than BG&E did. For each of the consoles, and the PC, PoP:SoT AND 1-2 other major blockbusters released in the couple of weeks preceding BG&E in a very crowded holiday release period.

I really don't know. I was still playing my Genesis back in 2003. :p I'll buy this Day 1 to see what the fuss is all about.

Got a PS2 copy sitting on my games shelf, had a wee play several years back, thought it was good then forgot all about it!
Looking forward to giving it another go to on the 360! :D

I missed this game back in the day. I am grateful for second chances. I've heard so many great things about this game and am looking forward to playing it for the first time. March can't come soon enough.

800msp ! I hope it sells in mass to show ms that 1200 is a price suited only to masterpieces I.e Bf 1943 and not anticipated/hyped up games (Stacking/Hydrophobia)

As my favourite game of all time, I am proud to say that this will be a definite first purchase for me. I'm still so anticipating for the sequel.

In fact, I might just keep my PS2 copy forever for no reason apart from sentimental value.

Much like Silent Hill 2 and Viewtiful Joe. This is a game that has aged well, and will forever hold a spot in my heart. Day one buy? You bet your ass, I bought a 1600 point card yesterday just so I'd be sure to have the 800 to drop on this day one. I can't wait to feel Nostalgia was over me..

Is this worth buying? I've heard a lot about it since it's original release but never had a chance to play it. Worth the 800?
