Akai Katana Shin
Akai Katana Coming to Xbox 360 in Japan

Cave's Akai Katana is set to make its way onto Xbox 360 following release in the Japanese arcades last year. The horizontal scrolling shooter - whose name means 'Red Katana' - will be coming to the console as an upgraded iteration entitled Akai Katana Shin.

With revamped visuals, a new gameplay system, a new stage and a 16:9 aspect ratio that re-assigns enemy movements and bullet patterns to better fit a widescreen display, Akai Katana Shin is a definitive version of the arcade game for Xbox 360. And Cave is also shoving the original version of the game on the disc too, which is nice.

However, Cave has announced that Akai Katana Shin will be region locked in Japan, so you'll be unable to import it overseas. That said, it could be the case that a western publisher picks up the rights to publish the game in western territories, just like Rising Star and Aksys Games did with Deathsmiles in Europe and North America respectively. Akai Katana Shin shoots its way into Japan on May 26th, 2011.

Can't believe this is a fully fledged game, stuff like this could surely be released on XBLA

OT: looks pretty and over the top in a fun kinda way (not like the japs eh!)

Been waiting for this for quite some time, I can't fucking wait. Thumbs up to CAVE for region locking, too many shmups have been region-free lately.

Cave makes awesome shooters. I loved Guwange, and I have Deathsmiles next in line for Gamefly.

I love my SHMUPS, but what's the deal with these oldschool games getting retail releases? Raiden Fighters definitely should have been an XBLA title as opposed to a retail disc. There just wasn't a lot on there.

I'm assuming this will be the same. Oh, well.

I seriously can't wrap my head around region lock. If people want to pay the import fees (that are usually ridiculous), can read Japanese or don't care to read and just play?

Why the hell would they deny selling another copy? Makes no sense to me.

Looks like an interesting budget title though.

@5 Why is region locking a good thing?? Surely its better for everyone including Cave to have no region lock, more sales for them, plus wider audience.

Thanks for the article, Richard. Even if it's not coming here, it's good to know that the region lock is a *fact* rather than having to scour scattered sources across the internet. =P

I believe that if they decided it would be region locked, it's beacause they're planning on releasing the game outside Japan. Otherwise it would be ridiculous, but it wouldn't be the first time... -_-

First of all, region locks make it more of a chance a game will get licensed overseas, which means more money for CAVE, and probably a cheaper price for Americans, since these games all cost about $85 before shipping for an import.

I wish I liked SHMUPs more, since they're always so appealing. I just suck at them so much. :/

Hmm, I doubt it will give it more chance of a USA/Europe release, seeing as Ketsui/DoDonPachi/DeathSmiles 2 are highly unlikely to make it across.
If we are lucky maybe after about 2 years ...
