Speaking today at his GDC session, Cliff Bleszinski, Epic’s Design Director, commented that it was important that game developers tap into viral channels and what better’s than using in-game Easter eggs to grab the headlines.

The first example Bleszinski used to highlight his point was Red Dead’s notorious donkey lady glitch.

“How many people actually found the donkey lady?” asked Bleszinski. “Very few, if any,” he responded as he scanned the room.

“I’ve never met anybody who found the donkey lady. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that maybe there’s somebody smart at Rockstar who actually put these things out there or even left the bug in there.”

Bleszinski then proceeded to highlight the Bulletstorm RROD Easter egg that made the headlines just after it launched in the US last week, before noting that it’s necessary to run these ideas through legal first though.

This kind of exposure can be invaluable for new IPs and just goes to show how important the attention to detail can be in games development, especially if you want it to have a viral effect.

It’s not just new IPs that should get this treatment though and Bleszinski continued to mention that they’ve packed them into Gears of War 3. So much so, that you could be looking for them for a very long time.

“It’s going to take months or years to find all of the stuff in Gears of War 3. That, I’m really excited about. If they don’t find it, we’ll leak it.”

Good news for stalwart Gears fans then, but they do have some way to go if they want to beat the infamous Gears of War 2 toaster Easter egg.
