In development to coincide with the blue spiky one's 20th anniversary, Sonic Generations has today been officially announced by SEGA, with a few details on the game that stars both classic 1991-style Sonic (albeit without the pixels) and the brash, whiny modern day Sonic that we've all come to love/hate (delete as appropriate).
Sonic Generations will be set across three defining eras in Sonic history, with several classic Sonic environments re-built from the ground up in glorious eye-bleeding HD. Stages will be playable in both 2D and 3D, and each Sonic will have their own bespoke abilities, such as the homing attack for modern Sonic and the classic spin attacks and dash moves for classic Sonic.
The icing on the cake is a new interactive menu system that will gradually reveal your favourite characters and hidden treasures unearthed throughout the game. And the premise for cramming 1991 Sonic into a game alongside modern Sonic? A 'mysterious new power' creating 'time holes', of course. As a result, you'll have to play as both Sonics to defeat a strange new enemy and find the perpetrator in this time hole creation malarkey.
“Sonic Generations will certainly be a fitting celebration for Sonic’s 20th Anniversary,” commented David Corless, Global Brand Director for Sonic. “By having the classic 1991 Sonic that many fans know and love team up with his modern day incarnation, we are bringing back the nostalgia of the early days of Sonic and combining it with the innovation and stunning HD technology of the modern gaming era. Sonic Generations will bring to life the last twenty years of Sonic’s universe in a truly unique and imaginative way.”
Check out the new gameplay trailer for Sonic Generations and look out for some new screens that we'll plonk into this post as soon as we get them. Sonic Generations is slated for a holiday 2011 release.
