Star Ocean developer tri-Ace has created a new real-time graphics engine, showing off exactly what it can do in a demonstration video that features some stunning lighting effects and astonishing sights, such as a rocket taking off, leaving behind a trail of billowing smoke against a startling orange sunset.
There are a couple of smart cameos in the video too, including the hero of Star Ocean: The Last Hope, Edge Maverick. Sadly, the engine and accompanying demo isn't attached to any projects currently in the pipeline at tri-Ace, but it does offer a tantalising glimpse at the kind of visual fidelity that could be just around the corner on consoles.
The demo shows off real-time "physically-based rendering on current generation consoles" apparently, which really begs the question, will we be seeing visuals like these soon? Maybe. Check out the stunning technical demonstration video for a first look at tri-Ace's new engine, and imagine what could be in the very near future.
