Alice Gets Her Combat on in the Latest Madness Returns Trailer

For us, the shallow combat in Alice: Madness Returns when we previewed it the other week, was actually one of the weaker aspects of the title. So quite why EA have released a combat trailer that highlights how shallow it actually is, is beyond us.

Watch Alice as she spams the attack button and the dodge button to her heart's content. There is one saving grace for this trailer though, and that's that you get to see the 'Hysteria' mode in full flow - a monochrome berserker state that makes Alice a force to be reckoned with!

Yeah... it's not the angle we'd have gone for to get people excited about the game. Our preview highlights why people should be excited though, so give that a read.

  • I'm liking the looks of combat, especially that dodge maneuver. June is going to be too good a month for gamers.
  • Is the combat why we want this game? I thought this game was different!
  • I'm playing through LA Noire now and the combat there ranges from nonexistent to rather mediocre. Still, LA Noire sports a very interesting storyline and fun detective/interrogation mechanics. From what I've seen by watching the first 10 mins of Alice. The game is visually engrossing and totally twisted. I'm rather curious about the story in Madness Returns + it comes with American McGee's and that alone is worth checking out, even if the combat might not be awesome.
  • the combat looks sort of reminiscent of DMC.
  • Alice can go Hollow? o-o
  • Oh lawdy I want this game so much
  • Amazing Surprisingly i might actually buy it..
  • Puhleease guys, buy this game. I mean puhleaase!
  • I will Be Playing Alice and Duke On June 14th
  • arg i want it but i cant afford it
  • Didn't really see anything wrong with the combat. Never played the first game cause it was on computer. Definately gonna be picking this game up on release. Anyone seen any preorder details?
  • This and Duke on the 14th, yippee.
  • Duke will be the King of my xbox for six days, but after that Alice is gonna be the Queen.
  • I want this game but I know not why
  • The combat reminds me of zelda: orcharina of time, I loved that game! maybe I might buy this game
  • Here is a link to try a demo of the original Alice game http://download.cnet.com/American-McGee-s-Alice-demo/3000-7563_4-10051630.html
  • Wow, this.. I had dismissed this as one of those crappy film-turned-game games. But this looks so.. pretty. Must.. research..
  • omg....pass boring as hell !
  • Reminds of Bayonetta in one way or another...
  • Whilst the story in Alice is what ppl, including me, loved about the first game the combat still needs to be good so that ppl don't quit playing. After seeing this trailer I would say that the it looks pretty much the same as the first game, except playing on Xbox will be easier I reckon, and look better too.
  • I just want Alice to get naked.
  • The combat looks boring and the game is about to be released in a few weeks, meaning its already ready to be shipped to retailers. his game will most likely fail...shame it seemed interesting.
  • @#21: There's always that to consider. Naked people can always make a game better.
  • Good to see what the combat looks like. I'm not bothered that it's rather hack-and-slash in the mechanics; if I wanted sophisticated combat I'd go play a different game. What I like about this game is that American McGee is involved, and that (as the preview mentioned) stylistically it's staying true to the warped and wonderful vision of the first game.
  • I am playing Fable 3 right now and it's totally like it! Mash one button constantly and dodge every now and then!! Good times - reason why I am avoiding every fight I can now...
  • Combat didn't look bad to me at all. Outland, for example, had us spamming for days on combat, but everything else was solid. I'm thinking that this will be similar. This game looks good.
