Whether you're American or British, the word 'football' has a different meaning, as well as differently shaped balls. Soccer however, is a dirty word and you'll not hear us using it here. So, to-may-to, to-mah-to, po-tay-to, po-tah-to, let's agree to disagree and all that. It's the time of year again when we start thinking about the next batch of sports updates, which means new screenies.

EA has released new batches of screens for both Madden NFL 12 and FIFA 12 today, showing off the former's shiny visuals, increased realism and real-time physics, while the latter shows off its shiny visuals, increased realism and real-time physics.

Check out both sets of screens via the gallery links below. Madden NFL 12 is slated for August 30th, 2011 while FIFA 12 is tentatively pencilled-in for autumn 2011 (or fall 2011).

Im English and most my mates spend ages talking about looking forward to FIFA 12 and they look at me with hatred in their eyes when talk about looking forward to Madden 12 more.

But OT the screens look extremely good but they always do, I'll probably be picking Madden up I havent got a recent one in years.

Face it EA, the only way you will appease us sports fans is if you make a Madden or FIFA game where we can control REAL superstars in REAL events. Enhancing graphics for the same game bored the crap out of us

I'm American and would rather play FIFA anyday. MADDEN has not been fun for me since the PS2 days. #6 is correct, they look the same every year.

skipped madden 11 even though drew brews (QB to my favorite team) was on the cover. I played madden 11 and it seemed a lot smoother. I didn't like the auto play though, because it made everything too simple. Every time i followed it i succeeded. I like when it goes back and forth and you get losses sometimes, thats just me.

Anyway On Topic, Can't wait to see if they change the controls for better and any other extras EA adds. Graphics are always a plus.

How about some zombie gametypes? Or some wacky forged custom arenas? Why must we be slaves to the old green pitch? Pah.

Don't hate me, but I never understood the need for sports video games every year. I've always felt that if I wanted to play football, I'd buy a football, not a video game.

yeah sport games and cod games can make due with releasing one game, and then releasing like a $10 update every year... wouldn't that make them more money? I mean, you'll certainly make more sales

#11 and 12... Good luck rounding up 24 people for a game of American Football, or 22 for a game of Soccer. Besides, I play Tennis, Badminton and Hockey quite a lot, and it doesn't stop me from enjoying Top Spin or NHL.

Moreover, I don't know about you guys, but it feels good passing Djokovic as Nadal, or deke Luongo out of his pads with Ovechkin, or overthrow Darrelle Revis with a pass from Manning to Wayne, or score on Van Der Sar with David Villa... unless you guys tell me you can do this in real life too?

Please no 500 games achievement in this year's one... Please...

My pro vanished from existence 250 games into this one. I still haven't played a single pro game since.

But I love FIFA, and buy it every year. All the haters are simply not sports game fans. I don't buy it for a new storyline or angle - the small improvements are good enough for a game that I'll play throughout the year.

@#11 and 12
I can say the same thing about any genre of video games. Why should I play a game about shooting people when I can just join the army? Why play a fighting game when I can just go out and fight real people?

madden needs to set atleast a year away from its standards. add special features - as said above, like zombie mode - mascot games, play on ice, sand football games... just random crap to make the game different. It doesnt matter if its necessarily better, just different. I'd love to have a feature to play the game in 32 bit graphics. It'd be a break from the "norm" now and still have fun playing with Manning in an old school format. Keep the exhibition games, season and franchise mode the same but add so new crap that actually means something to gamers. No one cares about Players cards and unlocking historical stats... We play the game for one reason, to have fun. Make a feature like Mutant League Football and make all the players look likes Monsters, Robots and Mutants.. We'll see how well the game sells then.

@14 Do you HAVE to have the official number of players to play a backyard game of football? No, just a decent number of real life friends.

@22 Because joining the military doesn't promise that you'll get to shoot anyone at all, plus can get you killed. So can going out and starting fights. Going outside for sports probably won't.

I play fifa at my older brothers, Its usually a good a time. : )
It is sad however to see how EA and Activision continue to make money off yearly installments of the same shit we play each year. Graphical upgrades or not, a smart consumer should know better.

I know I'll get more gameplay out of FIFA than out of most other games, so I buy it every year. It's a better version (albeit only slightly) than last year, I'll get hundreds of hours out of it. So it's a no brainer.

If you're upset that people buy it year after year, stop worrying. It really doesn't affect you. Go cry somewhere else.
