Having practically invented the first-person shooter with Wolfenstein 3D, id Software is looking to redefine the genre once again with Rage, which according to this first developer diary is not only one of the best-looking games you'll find on a console, but it runs at 60 frames a second to boot. A staggering achievement given the visual fidelity on show.
This is all thanks to id Tech 5, which draws upon John Carmack's programming masterbrain and id Software's long and illustrious FPS pedigree to create so-called 'mega textures' that give each of Rage's surfaces layers of detail and boosts the tangible look of objects. "Rage is the best thing id has ever done," says Creative Director, Tim Willits. Watching this latest dev diary, it's looking harder and harder to disagree.
Check out what is the first in a projected series of six developer diaries for Rage, which is scheduled to release on October 7th, 2011 in North America and October 10th, 2011 in Europe.
