Shank is back, and developer Klei Entertainment is packing the sequel - imaginatively titled Shank 2 - with new killer features, ensuring that the titular ex-mob hitman returns in style. Packing an arsenal of handguns, shotguns, automatic weapons, chainsaws, machetes, grenades and more, Shank will also be able to turn his enemy's weapons upon them as he goes on an all-out offensive.

Co-op will be massively improved too, with story-based co-op returning alongside a new Survival Mode, which introduces multiplayer arcade-style action, playable locally and online. Here's the obligatory new feature bullet-points:

  • Survival Mode: Team up with a friend online and locally to take down hordes of goons in this all-new and incredibly fun arcade-style multiplayer brawl.
  • Multi-weapon Combat System: With a brand new redesigned weapon system, take on smarter and greater variety of goons and bigger, badder bosses with new weapon combos and new counter moves that let you use enemies’ weapons against them!
  • Richer Environments: Look for opportunities to bring down ceilings, explode barrels, hurl crates, and more, and explore around to find new in-game unlockables!
  • Stunning Visuals: Directed by veteren cartoon director Jeff Agala, Shank 2 draws you into the action with a stunning visual style that sets a new benchmark in 2D brawlers.

Klei is also bringing double the animation, with sharper visuals, more interactive environments and more responsive gameplay for Shank 2, which should hopefully make it twice the game the original Shank was. Shank 2 is out in early 2012 on XBLA. Check out the trailer below and new screenshots in the gallery.
