Mass Effect 3 Co-Op Officially Official: "It's Nothing of What You've Feared"
Written By
View author's profile

Mass Effect 3's Executive Producer Casey Hudson has finally made the game's multiplayer officially official, with an announcement on Facebook asking fans to reserve judgement until BioWare has actually revealed more information about the mode, which consists of co-operative missions separate to the single-player campaign.

"We can officially confirm that there will be a multiplayer feature in Mass Effect 3. However, please reserve your appraisal until we are able to give more information," reads the Facebook post.

"Yes, co-op MP missions for ME3: they're real, and they're spectacular. Rest assured it's nothing of what you've feared," Hudson stated. "More soon..."

There will also be a special BioWareTV episode at 10AM on Wednesday October 12th that will attempt to answer any questions you might have about Mass Effect 3 multiplayer. Mass Effect 3 is out on March 6th, 2012.

Sounds good...CO-OP Missions might be fun..What would be really good,is if you can bring your charactor from the single player story into the CO-OP maybe you can level up your charactor between the 2 modes.

I've wanted this since I finished playing the first mass effect. I realized a co op would not work within the story line, but to have co op challenge modes where you can import you single player character and have fun mashing the AI's? I'm there!

Good news. Can't wait for this game! I've had the collectors edition pre ordered for like 4 months. Im glad it isn't competitive takes on multiplayer. Ever since the first Mass Effect I thought it'd be awesome with a co-op feature. Cant't wait!!!!!!!

I'm still not really hyped for co-op. I want a true RPG like the first game, and this just sounds like the trilogy's transformation to a shooter is complete. Still, I guess I should reserve judgement. Like it or loathe it I'll wind up playing the multiplayer if there are chievos...

I'm personally happy that they've added co-op missions. I don't recall an RPG title that had co-op missions before. At least it's not some team slayer or something people!

and to #8: the first Mass Effect had a boring story, terrible and cluttered inventory system, inferior combat, and nothing that could put it above Mass Effect 2, which is easily one of the best games of this generation. The variety and choices of the 2nd game put it leagues ahead of the first, which frankly didn't even stand up to KOTOR (but was still way better than Jade Empire).

I don't understand the fear of adding co-op to this installment. You are always playing within a group while you are doing your missions. I would assume that by adding co-op, you are adding an additional plus factor to the game play. I would love the addition of co-op to any game, just as long it is show the proper love and attention that the full single player experience would have. Of course I would hate a tack on co-op (Fable 2 anyone), that could ruin the co-op experience. Hence I would just play the single player campaign on my own.

So, ME3 is single player only, no MP in any form?

If this is the case, why don't they stop using the term "multiplayer" all together and just use co-op instead? Seems that's what most people are worried about.

Still though, don't even want that.

Wow, Bioware - way to add some really crucial bullet points to the back of your box. Now you have Better with Kinect, and Co-Op. Any other completely unnecessary features you want to tack on to appeal to wider audiences? I mean, that worked out so well with your approach to Dragon Age 2, right? Maybe you can throw in some Leaderboards or something. Idiots.

I'm really looking forward to playing this solo. There's so many choices and so much story in Mass Effect, I think co-op might ruin that. Unless of course they're doing it completely separate from the main game...still seems like an unnecessary add on. I really hope it's not a "horde" mode...

i really dont see how it will work, unless they drop the RPG aspect all together, why would the other person(s) want to join someones game basically just to sit an watch them choose speech options and only actually able to do anything once you start fighting....again thats if they dont abandoned the type of gameplay they've used from the first 2 games.

i really dont want a Gears 3 type of campaign in Mass Effect and i also dont want other ppl talking or doing anything to distract me from following the conversations.

the only possible comparison i can think of is the Fable 2 "co-op" which was basically you had no control over the game in terms of running ahead an could only help out in battles, apart from that you sat an watched the Host talk to ppl.

@24 - Did I say it was bad? No. Did I even MENTION it detracting from Single Player? No. Know why? It's not out, and therefore I haven't played it. So I am reserving judgement till that point. What I said was it is not needed. That's called an opinion. And I am sticking with it.

Got that all figured out? Genius.

Here's a couple of questions:
How many copies of the game would be sold if I wanted to play coop with my buddy in another city?

How many if he owned the game and it was just a single player game? Maybe I'm a broke ass gamer who would rather borrow the game.

Fun coop/multiplayer = more game sales. Not enough sales= no more games made.

I suppose I can learn to live with co-op missions. Chances are most of us will play through them once for any achievements and then only rarely glance at them again afterwards, but if Bioware thinks it was worth their time then so be it.

What is the point? EA will just shut down the servers soon after release... and btw for those that think otherwise (like #10), co-op = multiplayer... Definition: "A multiplayer video game is one which more than one person can play in the same game environment at the same time." Need I say more?

Separate co-op missions will add more to the experience. I don't know why people are complaining about it. It's not like it's going to take away from the campaign or central core to the game. Don't know about you guys im excited for this game and now even more excited that it has co-op.

Am I the only one who absolutely hates co-op? Let alone the inevitable achievements that go with it...

This goes for all games, it's a first-class immersion killer. Then again, I'm a bit of a lone wolf, so that might be a factor too. :)

1) Complete co-op Achievements
2) Go into True mode (Single Player)

Hopefully they didn't put too much time into it, so i can get into number 2 faster. As much as i like Bioware, i think they need to up their game.

At least The Witcher 2 comes out on consoles next year. That'll fill the void ME3 might leave for some people.

I'm sorry, but from these quotes, it sounds like they knew that die hard mass effect fans didn't want MP. At first I thought it might be plain ignorance on their part, but the fact that they knew fans didn't want it, and put it in anyway, means it won't be a day one anymore. Shame on Biowsre for selling out.

I know 1 sale won't make any difference but someboys has to stand up to these companies and say enough is enough with this bullshit.

So it's co-op, not multiplayer. Thats fine with me, Mass Effect (or at least Mass Effect 2) always felt like a game that co-op could work with, and with the co-op been separate to the main campaign maybe we'll get to play as characters other than Shepard and his/her squad?

Yikes! What an announcement! I for one can't wait to see this. I thought it risky at first, but after thinking about it some more, there's no way it can be a bad thing. Bioware are far too good at making games to let a co-op element ruin it's prized product.

I'm not to thrilled with the announcement, but I'm willing to see just how this is going to work. I really don't want to have somebody bring their Sheppard into my game, but it could be interesting if the Co-Op were a separate storyline.

I definitely won't be canceling my pre-order just because Bioware has decided to go this route.

Mr. Hudson I'll reserve judgement now. I enjoyed the first game when it wasn't anywhere near as hyped as this series has become. Now you follow in the footsteps of other dev's adding game modes that useless. You truly have become a sellout, I guess I would too as EA most likely held a gun to your head! I've lost all respect for Bioware even if you are three hours up the highway from me.

If it's implemented well and fits in nicely with the overall narrative, then I won't be upset. I can't guarantee I'll play it regardless, but if its at least thoughtfully done then I won't view it as a "sellout" or "cash grab" move like many have described it as.

But this is EA, so I have my reservations.

@47 What are you, 12? I don't see why everyone is so afraid of this transition. It could potentially be one of the best things to ever happen to the series. The fact is, until we play it or at least receive more information about it, we have no reason to dislike or judge this. I respect Bioware and I trust them to do something new and interesting with the series so long as the lengthy campaigns stay intact.

I think too many people are freaking out for the wrong reasons. Here's what I expect from them:

- You'll have your single player match, you'll do your single player stuff.

- There will be certain assignments or such that will be labeled as co-op, that will "match-make" you online with someone or require you to invite a friend playing ME3 to join. You'll both play your characters, one person is Shepard and another is a Henchman Merc guy (and maybe it'll look to be vice versa for the other player.)

- You go around and shoot things up, complete the mission, resume Single Player. I'm thinking very much like Crackdown's co-op missions, or Little Big Planet or Crimson Alliance where it's like "Hey, you need 2 people to do this thing, it's not a big deal, but it'd be cool if you have 2 people."

My biggest fear would be if they had any real substance beyond just being pointless action things you could do with no real semblance of plot or story. The moment they involve plot, even if it's not tied to the main plot, they're forcing people to do something they might not want to do in order to get a nugget of story out of the game, whether it's some Batarian Raiders or Blue Suns or some Prothean Ruins or whatever.

As for my distaste, and most likely other people's distaste for Multiplayer is that ME is a story driven experience. The moment you start playing with someone else, you have to interact with them in the real world. You are getting pulled out of your escape to a fantasy world when they start talking about the awesome food they're eating for dinner or bitching about how their day sucked or how their vacation went or whatever. You're no longer Commander Shepard kicking ass in space, you're just somebody playing a videogame and carrying on a conversation with a friend. It's all about immersion with a game like this and multiplayer just totally pulls you out of it. Mass Effect has such a rich world and environment it'd be a shame to detract from it with real world interactions.

EA said that singleplayer was dead. They force multiplayer so they can charge for activation codes for used or rented games.

@27 Learn to read fool, I never said you said it was bad. Also I never said you said it will impact the single player but that's what the complaints usually are about. So in case your response was about it hurting the single player experience I said "Don't start with this its gonna hurt the singleplayer crap until you have played the actual game. " I was misleading in the way I worded it.

Read carefully and you can see that it is optional and a separate team worked on this mode.

"In multiplayer, players will create custom characters to fight on different and unique fronts in the war," the developer writes. "This will include the ability to play as favorites like Turians, Krogans, Asari and more… each with their own unique set of abilities."

It's 4 player co-op. Sounds absolutely perfect to me.

@76 - Fair point, sir. As I saw it, you thought I had already judged it, and thought it was detracting from the single player aspect. I see now that that is not the case.
I still stand by the fact that never once while playing ME1 or ME2 did I think to myself that the game was just lacking that-oh-so-necessary Co-Op experience.

@72 - I'm starting to loose faith, actually. Did you play Dragon Age 2? If so, I would think you faith might be a little shaken as well. By no means a bad game, but definitely a step in the wrong direction. And now this?
I like my (non MMO) RPG's to be single player experiences. That's my personal preference, and I am not going to apologize for it.

Guess I'll have to try out my luck on random multiplayer, not having other 3 mass effect fans in the area.

@10 - I am not a moron! However, I dislike co-op as I don't tend to play online and I am 47 so I don't tend to have mates around for the purpose of gaming! Further, I have found that generally, when makers of games offer something extra on the disc they then take something from elsewhere. Look at Bioshock 2, for example, not only did the entire campaign give you guidance on how to play the multiplayer, but it was shorter than the first Bioshock as well. And before you say, 'but look at Gears of War 3', don't forget that whilst they offer a lot, they do also offer a particularly short campaign (I did, however, manage to play co-op on this - by setting up a second controller and playing it through alone!). I am also concerned about how co-op will fit around the RPG elements of the game, and, if I'm honest, if there is to be more story offered in the co-op, then I fear I will miss out there as I will have little chance to play the co-op. Why is it that some games cannot simply remain a single player experience?

Again if it doesn't take away from the main game I'll be fine. . . but from what I've seen from other amazing games that had an amazing story and said in a sequel. . . hey lets put MP in it that will draw out the longevity of the game. It fell flat on its face. . . . I wont be doing anything multiplayer and I wont be doing anything Co-op. . . . Mass Effect was a journey I started 4 years ago. . . I tend to finish it. . . alone.

Always fun to see companies admit that they know what they're doing is stupid. Prefacing a new feature with "Please reserve your judgment" is business-speak for, "We know you think we're stupid, but we're gonna try anyway." Seriously, how many people actually wrote to anyone saying, "You know what would make this single-player RPG even better? Making it a not-single-player RPG!"

Feel better knowing it is co-op missions instead of a team deathmatch scenario. A co-op story would only really work if the difficulty and number of enemies was dialled up to keep it challenging.

I love Mass Effect and I love co-op, I'm thinking this will be pretty good.

Either way, day 1 buy for me. Absolutely cannot way for this. Pity it's out on a Tuesday though, might have to take a day off work to play it! (I won't really, but would be nice)

It's a stupid and useless thing to put in the game. It still sounds interesting, but I'd rather they had saved this for a spin-off or something.

ahhhhh there's the EA as I know it! I have no interest in playing this with someone else! That's not what it's about. The first 2 were perfect and all story. If I want to play multiplayer shooters I'll be found in BF3 when it's released. Mass Effect is all about the epic SINGLE PLAYER story.
