Batman: Arkham City
Batman: Arkham City's Online VIP Pass Unlocks Catwoman
Written By
View author's profile

It seems that almost every game has an online pass of some description nowadays, and Batman: Arkham City will be no exception, with its bundled VIP pass unlocking the game's Catwoman content. "Playing as Catwoman is not required to complete the game," Warner Bros. told Eurogamer in a statement, if you're concerned.

Should you buy a pre-owned copy of Batman: Arkham City, you'll still be able to access the Catwoman character, four story sequences and her Riddler's Revenge challenge rooms by purchasing a VIP pass via the Xbox Live Marketplace. "Players who purchase previously owned copies of Batman: Arkham City can access the playable Catwoman content for 800 Microsoft Points," Warner confirmed.

Obviously Catwoman will still play her usual role in the story without a pass, but if you want to actually play as her, you'll be wanting that pass. Our advice? Buy new! Watch the skies for the Bat Signal as Batman: Arkham City prepares to launch on October 18th in North America and October 21st in Europe.

While I'm happy you don't need her to complete the campaign, it's still lame that the season pass is affecting single player content now. I don't care about Catwoman so I am happy to only rent this game and not support this kind of exploit.

Clearly with all the massive titles out at around the same time they fear massive losses of potential takings through the pre-owner market as others prioritise FPS and Sports titles instead.

Personally i dont blame them, i always buy games new when i can anyway - six months down the line when single players games like this are half the launch price but getting no return for pre owned games is killing the market based on how many studios have closed this year alone.

I buy new, but I am getting fed up with all the passes, DLC, differing pre-order incentives... blah, blah, blah. I do hope this is just the start and feeling things out and eventually it will become a decent and considered system, rather than just tacking it onto everything to see how much $ we can be bled for.

Can;t say I'm particularly happy about it...if it's on the game then you should be able to play it straightaway...tbh I think they should just have given the first DLC (challenge rooms etc) free in a few weeks (whenever it would be released). Taking out a portion of the game which has had quite a bit of time put into it just seems unfair...

I am still going to rent this game but I am annoyed to hear this news. What happens in the future when the servers are down and you want to play Arkham City? Oh, wait you won't be able to play as Catwoman because you cannot download her or redeem your code. What happens when the game goes out of print?

Either way I will be buying this game if I enjoy it enough when it drops down in price.

I am sick of these ways to gouge the customer of money. Thankfully, I am not a fan of Catwoman.

More to you but it's not easy to spend money on Forza 4, Batman, BF3, Skyrim, Mw3, and AC:BH. All great games for the future and I bought Gears 3 I can't buy all these NEW!! Be a happy man if I could.

I've pre ordered this but I won't be playing as her, it's Batman Arkham City, not Batman & Catwoman Arkham City. Never really mattered to me when they said "Oh, you can play as Catwoman" As I care nothing about her, but why at the time didn't they add "but you have to give us more money to do so"?

@2 It's not Rocksteadys' decision, it's their owners Warner Bros. At the end of the day Rocksteady just want to make games but Warner Bros know this will sell well, so put an online pass and more people will pay to play the extra content. I think it's wrong to do so but this will never change so us as gamers have to get used to this. If you want to blame a gaming company then blame THQ for starting this all off in the first place.

I dont really care to be honest. I buy games new anyway - they have to find a way to fight that companies can sell games for 100% profit through the pre-owned selection.
I think its fair that Rocksteady gets a bit of money for your purchase of their game, rather than the seller getting it all...

I agree with both sides. Yes you shouldn't have to pay for something already included in the game.

But from a business side you cannot tell me you'd be fine with selling 10 copies instead of 20. They make games to make money it's just how every company works and if they have a product out there and it's going to keep circulating around why shouldn't they get paid for it somehow? It's just like having to pay for a copyright use, and if you are already getting the game discounted hopefully paying $10 more will still save you money.

People are obviously missing the fact that it comes with free with a new purchase. When you buy a used copy of a game you robbing the developers as you are still enjoying their product.

@33 - Developers get nothing if their game is bought used, all profits go to the retailer. Online passes are just a way to recoup those losses. You're purchasing a licence for their software, but they aren't receiving money for it. To me, that sounds a bit like thievery, even though it's a legal activity.

@31 you crazy bro? After you finish the long story mode you get new game+ which will add even more stuff. It sound like your buying new so you get catwoman story missions and challenge rooms aswell. Also the challenges rooms are more playability. THis game will last you a couple of days dont worry about it.

@33 Exactly right.

People fail to realize this. Gamestop doesn't give a dime to the developers when they sell their games used. So the consumers out there using their product are not supporting the company that give them entertainment and in this case a bad ass game.

Goes to show how far customer loyalty goes when you see people bitching when exclusive content is reserved for those that support the company.

So if you bought a used car would you pay the car company for the right to drive it? No. This practice is totally unique to the games industry. If developers want to recoup potential earnings, they should take it up with the publishers and retailers, not fuel resentment amongst their customers.

I'm buying it new because of how awesome Arkham Asylum was, not to get some season pass BS content. I'm fine with buying THIS game new, because it'll be an amazing game, the first one was amazing and Rocksteady deserves the credit, and money for their hard work.

I'm not ok, with the slew of games recently that are pumping out games with online passes for playing multiplayer. If you want to withhold some sewer sections (Rage) or Catwomen content (Batman) that is fine, but to stop me from playing with my friends just because I got it 2nd hand is rediculous.

You want people to buy your games new, then make amazing games!

Online passes for non-online games are just a giant slap in our faces.
(And they are a rip-off anyway, but in that case it's just worse)

If it's really about countering illegal copies, make M$ work on the security of the console, don't charge the ALREADY paying customers for the actions of others !

Greedy bastards.

There must not be any Catwoman related achievements. . .@39 sorry, but you are a sucker if you pay full market value for anything you do not want to. If they dont want to lose money to resale release the game digitally. Until then I buy a game as cheap as I can find it and sell it again as soon as I can while its value is still high. The day I cant buy and sell games is the day I find a new hobby.

Wow, that definitely sucks. See, it's all about forcing us to pay new copies so we don't save money but what gets me is this: what if you're not the only person in your home who wants to play the game? I mean, you buy online games that require passes and only one person gets to experience everything unless everyone else wants to shell out $10. Mind you, this is just playing as Catwoman as opposed to full online co-op/competition but the very system of it is insulting and greedy and the people who defend it are part of the problem.

I don't really see a huge issue with it since when people buy used it's usually to get games on the cheap. You're still getting it on the cheap, slap down 10 more dollars and you get this additional content. You're still saving money that you didn't spend by buying it new. It's a pain and the ethics of it are questionable, but game developers don't see used copy sales money. Used game sales are right back to the store, are they not? Why is it bad for companies to try and make a profit over second hand copies of the game they published? This is the only way they're really able to unless you count dlc. Even then, this content is entirely optional. I wouldn't mind paying 30 dollars retail for the game and then another 10 to unlock everything. I'm still saving money versus buying it new in the long run.

@47 Used games are going to be $55 at retailers for a while, so you don't save anything if you're getting the pass. And, seriously, can anyone link to where they're all getting that the developers ARE seeing this money? When EA busts out an online pass, I'm pretty sure EA's getting paid, not the people who made the game.

What it doesn't mention here is her abilities are required to access a number of unique Riddler trophies within the game. These trophies play into an optional side quest involving the riddler so i don't know if renting or lending it off a mate will allow you to get the full 100% on it, so that's why i'm abit annoyed as her part alone amounts to 10% of the game apparently.

If you buy pre-used=> less income for developers=>less money for making new awesome games. Pre-used games is one of the reasons there are so many shit games out there, and that companies barely have the guts to be original.

Two Worlds 2 bargain bin = $5 for me and $0 for developers. Shitty deal for them should have made a better game!

Can someone educate me on how new games are sold.i mean if a game prints 200,000 copies and you have wal mart kmart tru and tons of other retailers buying the games do they not pay for them until they sell them?it seems to me like the 200,000 copies allready have been sold and the publisher/developer received there money it seems the one who loses on that batch of games is the retailer who is stuck with new copies because people are buying used

@27 That's the kind of attitude that is screwing gamers. "We just have to get used to it?" No. No we don't. Screw that. I don't buy games, used or new that restrict content. The more people do this, the more money they lose, then they'll stop. But sheep like you just go along with it. Have fun doing what you're told. I'll be having fun playing games that developers and publishers actually want me to play.

Pathetic. Locking out single player content is the lowest of the low. They sold 2 million copies of Batman:AA in three weeks on consoles alone, so you can't tell me preowned games are killing the market, or putting huge financial strains on the developer.

This is just sheer greed. Fuck you Rocksteady/WB Games, along with having to buy a Green Lantern DVD for a costume skin, and varying preorder suits and content, I'll just "get" this on the PC instead - Deal with it.

Bring on the thumbs down, I don't give a toss.

Lay off the hate for Rocksteady after creating what is apparently a masterpiece, it is quite evident that is the work of Warner (THE PUBLISHER) who have slapped an online pass onto this game.

For the record, 800 MSP is £6.80, not £6.99

I think another thing most people don't realize is that by adding these passes into the game is devaluing YOUR game that you legally purchased. YOUR game that you bought is now worth $10 less. If you trade it in you get less money cause the used game stores lower the price to accommodate for the online pass. I have been against these passes since the beginning but some people feel the need to defend them. Saying that the developer doesn't get any of the revenue from pre-owned games, No duh, they got paid the first time the game was bought. That person is no longer playing it. Why do they think they should be paid twice? Maybe if they are so worried about pre-owned sales they should buy back used copies of their game for prices similar to game stores and then sell them pre-owned themselves. Than they will make all the money. This whole online pass thing keeps getting worse and worse. And it will keep getting worse as long as people allow it. I can't wait until the games come with a one time use code to unlock the main game. Then you won't be able to sell or do anything with the copy you bought. That is where I see this ending up. It's just horrible and sad really.

Used purchasers be glad you have the opportunity to purchase the VIP pass at all. You pay 100% for a game you should get 100% of the content. If you pay 50% of the original cost and get 98% of the content you should be damn happy, especially if you can pay a couple bucks to get the rest. I have no sympathy for you that complain about this. That said, having to purchase several copies of the same game to get all the pre-order bonuses IS fucking bullshit.

@65 they aren't locking out single player content, it's been confirmed that the cat women levels have nothing to do with the main game. When you buy the game you get everything and cat woman is a bonus with the other add ons

@70 so based on your reasoning behind purchase price. A person that pays $60 for the game should get the whole game but a person that finds it cheaper and pays $30 shouldn't get the whole game? That comment makes no sense.

I pretty much always buy new but usually wait a while for it to come down in price.

A new copy for £20 is better than a used for £20 with a manual that someone has given to their dog for a toy, a disc that has been used as a frisby and a case that was dropped from the top of the empire state building.

9 times out of 10 if you wait a new copy is cheaper than most used and is better for the developer surely as it still puts some money in their pockets.

Anyone who says they can't afford new is clearly not doing their research. New copy of Gears 3 cost me under £30 - all used copies I have seen so far are £34.99 in shops.

I can't believe how you guys are all a bunch of scavengers. calling the devs greedy even though it's all of you complaining about spending 5 pounds more! do your health some good and dont buy your next packetof cigarettes and buy this pass! the game new is well worth it for sure seeing how the first one was! and all the info we have on this one shows it going to be amazing! and if you're not happy buy the game second hand and don't moan about something that nobody is forcing you to buy! when you buy a car nobody forces you to take "all options" and this is the same!

At people who won't buy the game at all because of the pass.

I hope you all didn't buy Gears 3, Rage or LANoire. Or i hope you ain't planning on buy Battlefield 3, Call of Duty MW 3 anything from THQ or EA because if you did or planning then your all hypocrites. You didn't want this game in the first place and you are using this as an excuse. GET OVER IT PEOPLE. (I SUPPORT THIS NEW WAY OF GAMING AND YOU SHOULD TO)

its about time they made game stores pay this 'lost money' rather than the customers tbh

you can justify it all you want but it is becoming such a major rip off these days when it comes to gaming.

i do not understand why we the people that support their games by buying them have to shell out extra money if we buy it in a shop used, or if we rent it. surely the shops who are the ones not paying a dime to the developers from used copies should be getting charged for the free profits they are getting.

@62 Nothing you say nor do will change publishers like EA and THQs' minds. I don't like the online pass system personally but if you think about it from a business point of view they will need the online passes to support their company, if everyone bought a game second hand then they will go bankrupt (eventually), then there will be no more games from a developer like Rocksteady, or maybe even DICE. They need these online passes so if people like you want to buy a game second hand they will charge you like £2 extra for the online functionality. If you don't like it don't buy it, or buy it new. Simple don't bitch about something that will never change.

Forgot to mention I wont be buying this since there's no use having two copies of the same game in one house so I'm letting my brother get it.. Recovering my 70MB profile on his xbox everytime I wanna play isn't an option. I'll either miss out or buy the pass if I happen to find a Microsoft Points card laying on the street >_>

This doesnt effect me cause I'm buying it day one but that's still a load of bullshit! Season passes should never effect the singleplayer. That's like taking the homicide cases out of L.A noire. To be honest Season passes shouldn't bloody exist anyway. If you want me to buy your game new, make a better game.

At the end of the day, the winners here will be the pirates, who get all the skins and content for nothing, whilst people who wait a few months (understandable with christmas coming up) to save some money and get it preowned, when we aren't talking a "lol you save 5 dollars why not buy it new?" price difference get screwed.

This has all got out of hand. What makes Video game developers/publishers so special that they think they deserve a cut of preowned sales, when no other entertainment industry does this? Why not go after shops which make millions on preowned games as opposed to screwing over the average consumer who can't afford to buy every game new?.

And don't even get me started on different stores having different preorder incentives - that is just beyond retarded. Still though, I'm sure everyone who profits from selling codes on Ebay would disagree, but then why would devs give a fuck about fans of that game getting shafted once again.

Don't know if this has been posted as I'm too busy to scan through all 83 posts right now, but here's a part of the review for Catwoman DLC from IGN this morning:

"If I can give you some advice, download and install the Catwoman missions before starting the game. Her four story missions, inserted throughout Batman: Arkham City, are a fun (albeit simple) change of pace, and literally change the opening of the game. I downloaded her stuff after beating the game the first time, and the integrated Catwoman stuff during my New Game Plus playthrough was way more enjoyable than just tackling her missions off the main menu. This is downloadable content that expands the mythos of the game as you're playing it. It explains events that are happening off camera."

So it seems the Catwoman content will be pretty good & not just tacked on.

One more important thing to note, also from the review:

"Outside of the four missions, the Catwoman DLC gives you challenge maps for the feline and the ability to get the special Catwoman Riddler Trophies in Arkham City."

So what does this mean regarding the achievements tied to the riddler trophies & challenges? Are these riddler trophies you can only acquire as Catwoman required to collect all of them? Something to consider. I don't care cause I'm buying the game new, hopefully today or Monday.

I think that it is funny that people are whining about companies trying to make some money. I am on the fence about the online pass myself, but I will not let that effect my decision on whether or not that I buy a game. I would rather pay for the game and get the online pass that comes with it, than rent it, or buy it used then try to decided if I will buy the online pass. I have as of yet buy it.

I also would like to find out why people think that developers take out parts in the game and resell it as DLC or used as online play. Do you have any facts to back this presumption or did you read it on Wikipedia? I will gladly pay for DLC for a game that I thoroughly enjoyed playing.

If you have a problem with how business works in the world, why don't you go to New York city and camp with the Wall Street demonstrators. I will be sitting in my house thoroughly enjoying my new copy of Batman.

I don't understand the anger towards the online passes. If its a company I support I am happy to buy new, if its a company I don't care for or a game I am not excited for I'll pick it up used. Take Mass Effect 3 and bioware for example, I was so severly disapointed with DA2 that I will not buy ME3 new. I know I will have to buy a "cerberus pass" or whatever they are going to call it this time when I pick it up but that's ok cause I wont be buying the game till it's cheap. I don't want to support last game making so I won't support Bioware by buying new but I will pick up the pass and support the producers so they will continue to produce games. Who cares if there is an online pass, wait get the game for $20 or when they release the GOTY/collected edition and get the content that way. Buying used does nothing for the gaming industry aside from depreciate the value of your investment, I know I am guilty of contributing to this as well but until there is a happy medium this is how the business model will work. Think of it this way, buying used is no different then renting, you don't own that copy your just using it, buy the pass and you are actually purchasing

More pass nonsense? Effecting single player too? I've lost respect for the companies involved here. It's easy to simply call for people to pull bootstraps or stop being cheap but many MANY people simply cannot afford it. Bootstraps do not always exist, heck I'm disabled and stuck with so little I can barely manage a game every few months used, and I'm better off than a lot of people in the world! It's part of the system, people with money buy used, they finish the game and sell it to recoup money legally on something they own, other people pay money for the used and get to experience the game which also builds hype and following for the game and devs involved which in turn can generate money for their next game.

They are making the same mistakes the other entertainment industries are by not embracing what people want and the modern technology available. If they make good games people will buy them new, if they make good DLC worth buying people will pay for it, and if they want to sell more copies to people buying used...Why don't they sell copies of the games for cheaper? Reprint options and download options kinda like steam has done with the pc. If I can get a reprint or new copy of a 5 year old game for $10 instead of used for the same I'll go new! They are capable of such options but don't embrace it and instead exacerbate the problems and tick off consumers.

There is enough people with money vs people without money nonsense in politics in the world we don't need it in gaming as well. Support your fellow gamers, we're here to have fun regardless of if we can afford new or used.

@86 facts to back up developers take out bits of game then sell as dlc?

how about they have been advertising catwoman and all of her gameplay as part of the game for months and months and it will be there on the disc at release. so they are removing said content then reselling it to people who do not buy the game brand new.

@84 it will feel like its explaining part of the story and not tacked on because it isn't tacked on. it was removed and replaced.

What it really boils down to is this:

You buy the license to play the game, disc in hand. It is worth a certain value ($59.99 in most cases). You then sell it, having played it for less than the retail value or its initial MSRP. The devs got their money, you get a rebate after playing.

Now, the real problem is when someone ELSE buys said game that you sold. Say you get $35 trade value (trading it in same week lets say). The poor sucker that buys it used (typically $54.99 or we could even go as low as $50.00). That's now $54.99 or $50.99 the devs don't get for their game. If someone waited 3 months, yeah, they would buy it new for $35.99 or even less. Sure, the devs would make less but it would still be SOME money they get for their game.

In all, the trade-in/used game market is a scam. I'm not trolling here because I use the system as it exists myself. I usually get only about $5 on average because I hang onto the games for a while. Gamestop probably makes a mint off of me with their markup.

Games drop in value over time. If you look at the music industry, there are some cd's that never drop price. You'll probably still pay retail for Dark Side of the Moon which was released in 1973!!!

The only way to counter this tactic, if you believe it is wrong, is not to buy the pass, don't buy the dlc, wait until the game is old and then purchase it. Otherwise, its a changing world out there...

you can trade in two 8$ titles at gamestop and get Arkham City for 10$ for you achievement lovers like myself you can buy two used games get whatever achievements you can by tuesday and trade them in and still pay less than you would if you bought it new(including what you payed for the used games)...I save my games for these kind of deals(battlefield3, modern warfare3, skyrim, etc.) anything else just isn't worth the little credit they give you.

@37 - The difference between buying a car and buying a game, is that when you buy a car, you own it. The manufactor relinquishes all ownership of that car. When you buy a game, however, you are merely buying a licence for the software. You don't actually own the product.
So no, you wouldn't pay a car manufacturer if you buy a used car, but in this situation, and with any other game, an online pass is perfectly valid.

Just buy it new. It will be $50-55 used for the next 6 months anyway. And the pass is only $10 so if you got it for $50 it would be the same as a new copy. Why would anyone want to wait to get this game anyway?

I don't see why everyone's bitching, this makes perfect sense from a marketing perspective. If you wanna think about it buying a used game from gamestop is basically the same as downloading the game from a pirating website, developers get fucked out of money for their product.

lol at everyone sticking up for devs/publishers in this situation.

What's next? buy a preowned Guns and Roses greatest hits - you wanna listen to Sweet Child o Mine? Sure, that's an extra £6.99 please

Buy an ex-rental copy of Transformers from Blockbuster - you want to see the extras? Sure, that's an extra £6.99 please

The fact that all of you just take with a shit eating grin and just say more please is the reason why developers are doing this to us all.

Remember when VCR's were going to kill the movie theaters? and how piracy was killing movie ticket sales? yeah, sure. This is a dick move, and all of you who say "it makes great marketing sense" or "it's a business, they have to make money" need to look at the numbers that some of these AAA games are making, then come back and tell me these measures are nothing but pure greed.

In the meantime, Pirates will be laughing their asses off at people having to jump through several hoops to get all preorder bonuses, and getting all the content for free anyway.

Video games man, what the fuck happened?

This is just pure greed. Publishers rape gamers again and again. It's not like they will lose money on this game, they'll sell millions of copies anyway.
I'm just so f'kin fed up with all the DLCs, online passes, preorder exclusives, and so on. Welcome to the era of "IKEA" video games. You have to assemble all the pieces to get a full product. I just want a complete game on the disc I'm buying, no matter when and where!!!

I love the people who say we're hypocrites for calling out company greed and yet not wanting to pay $10 more for the online pass... YES! See, that's the point, we shouldn't have to pay $60 for something that isn't 100% going to be worth it (this game is a rarity in that case but how many of you bought Homefront day 1?) or $10 extra for each household member. That's not hypocrisy, that's not liking greed. lol.

They are all mouthing off thinking they are all better than the others! yet in the end they are going to be the only ones buying the online passes because in most cases the people that are ok with them are the ones that are going to buy the game new! so don't care anyway! everyone is complaining yet not ONE!!! of you will do anything about it and start a petition so that it's the resellers that pay their part to the devs when they sell 2nd hand games and not the clients themselves! yet you are all full of mouth and acting big by pointing fingers saying we that buy new are the problem! instead actually trying to sort out the problem that seems to be killing you!

if games were actually worth the $60 charged for them, then used games sales would go down. its all word of mouth. someone buys a new game, hates and tells their friend. so instead of buying it new, they buy it used and save some money and dont regret buying a crappy game at full retail price

I have no problem with this at all.

Its an incentive to buy the game new (which I was going to do anyway).

It's free if you buy new, if you buy used or rent then the devs are guaranteed to get some money out of the game that they otherwise wouldn't.

I don't see any problem.

You CANNOT have it both ways, you either have Rocksteady and pay a bit more for a game, with a sizable bit of DLC, that will be up there for the best game of they year, or they go under in a couple of years because they're hemorrhaging money, and Warner dump them. It happens a lot. Then everyone complains that Rocksteady is no more, when in fact you only have yourselves to blame.

This kinda thing is like a safety net. Much like pre-order bonuses are an incentive for people to pre-order the game.

Simple answer is if you don't like it don't buy the game.

Doing a petition at this point would make no difference, as people like you have allowed this practice to go on unchecked. Not only allowed it to go on mind, actually SUPPORTED it.

And yes, I am doing something by not buying this game, whereas I was going to before, and hey, I might even have bought some DLC for it had I enjoyed it. Not going to happen now, so I'm doing something by voting with my wallet. Small fry to them I'm sure, but that's all I can do.

Perhaps if gamers actually just held their hands up and said no more, maybe they would have to take notice, but with people like you who are seemingly okay with things like costumes only being available if you buy a Green Lantern DVD, or having to preorder at 3-4 different shops to get everything that back in the day, was simply an unlockable, or pay over the odds for it on Ebay, that's obviously never going to happen.

All these people backing the greed of publishers over the consumer. Sad. As for pre-owned, the retailer would struggle to survive if they had to rely on their cut from new games. They have to pay upfront and hope the games then sell. Retailer goes under, where do you get your games?

The fact they have now REMOVED features from the final product - then offering it back to us as BONUS - is an insult to our intelligence.

LOL. Look at all the whining little pricks here. It's funny. You don't realize how much of a crybaby some people can be until you come onto an X360A article and read the comments.

Here's the thing. When you buy the game, you still get THE ENTIRE GAME FOR YOUR PURCHASE. Catwoman was never advertised as being part of the main game. It's a bonus. This is an INCENTIVE for people to buy the game new, due to all of the moronic idiots who go and buy used games from GameCrap or whatever.

This isn't the developers fault at all. This is the fault of people who buy the game used, thus technically robbing the game developer of any profits whatsoever.

Besides, why complain? If you DO want to play as Catwoman, and DON'T want to pay extra, buy the game new. I mean seriously, get a fucking job and get some cash. The economy is bad but not that bad. Otherwise just go ahead and buy the game used, rob Rocksteady of their cash, and just play the rest of the game minus anything to do with Catwoman.

I never understood the used games practice myself. Every game I buy, I buy it new, or GOTY, save for a couple of low tier Wii titles that had been out for a couple of years. I collect games, I like to have a big collection. I don't see the point in spending money on something, getting rid of it and getting like half the money for it, and then getting something else. It's ridiculous, and outright stupid if you ask me.

Plus, as most of the smarter people here have been saying, and I'll say again, you're basically giving money to GameStop or whoever when you buy a game used. So instead of RockSteady making a profit for making an excellent game, you're robbing them of that profit becaues you don't buy that one copy of the game for whatever reason. So frankly, it makes sense then since you "robbed" them of that profit, they "rob" you of content by making you have to pay extra to access it. After all, how are they going to make money otherwise? Don't you want another game like this? Do you want them to make a Superman game?

Or would you rather just have the entire video game industry controlled by Electronic Arts and Activision, because all the other companies get swallowed up or go bankrupt, due to people buying used games all the time?

Go ahead, downvote this comment. I've realized lately any comment that goes against the majority way of thinking on this site gets a thumbs down, because the children don't like opinions differing from their own. Just look at this article. Every post in favor of this or offering a logical explanation for it gets a thumbs down. All the comments against it, even the stupid ones, get a whole lots of thumbs.

Yeah, so go ahead. Give me a thumbs down, and go shove the thumb up your ass. You'll be proving me right.

I can see both sides to this issue of the online pass garbage.

About the used sales market though, whats stopping me from selling it to a friend or letting a friend borrow it, devs dont get money for that?

Do they also get money each time someone rents the game, or a flat rate in the beginning?

What about finding games out of print, or having server closures. Who would want to buy a multiplayer game new if the servers are shut down?

The only solution i could see to permanently quash the used market would be to shut down all of the used game sellers/rental services/internet and force people have a code used specifically for your account only.

I generally buy new games, but am starting to be very picky about what i get now. Let's just hope Skyrim has no pass requirement.

I am personally against the online pass/locked content/day1 DLC on disc garbage. I for one will not be buying this game eventhough i loved Aslyum.

I feel that in the end of it all, devs (or publishers, whoever is to blame) are just being too greedy and need to be showed their wicked ways.

Why are you people complaining. If you are gonna buy this game used, you are only gonna pay $5 less. As the prices for used games that are still new on the market aren't that much less than a brand new and sealed copy, why don't you just spend the extra $5 and get it new? If you are the type to wait a few months till the price drops for the game and you still buy it used, then you are paying $10 to $20 less. So if you buy Batman: AC used for around $34.99 and then purchase the VIP pass you are still paying less than those of us who bought it new.

@126 I take it more on the side of 'Not Enough Memory' and for people who dont have Live. They have to missout on this content which could have easily been in game. The ammount of times I've had to wipe things off my HDD to fit some minor content on to help attain completion of a game. I mean, I know a few people who can't afford an internet connection and he always has to buy games used. So why do people like him have to suffer? The whole 'It's only so much more for new' is arbitrary. I mean, look at the people who buy a game, use all the codes, than trade it n a few days later. Someone who would actually get use out of that content has just missed out and it's not fair... Look back a few years ago, in the days of Playstation 1 & 2 and the original Xbox. Extra content was only added if the game was a success and the Developers wanted to add a little something extra. Sometimes what we had first was what we got and all of it. Now developers say we get something then at the last moment and say, 'Oh you want this? Jump through hoops and we'll let you have it'

@72 I agree, no sense. That is like saying I found a shirt on sale that is two years old and all I get are the sleeves.

On topic - Personally this does not affect me for this game, but for the other people who want to buy it used, you have the right to be upset. Like many others I have seen, we have been opposed to this since the start. My philosophy is to reward others for buying it new do not punish those for buying it used. Give the "early adopters" something brag about and those waiting something to be jealous about. INCENTIVES are what drives consumers, hence us preordering games.

I understand both sides, but as a gamer that has bills, a job, and a family sometimes $60 is not an option. I know this is not the point of the online passes but if feel like I am feeling punished for being responsible in my spending.

Warner Bro. and Gamestop made a deal where if people buy Arkham City used, they print the online pass for free on the receipt. Stop bitching, nobody is happy with anything. Catwoman is not needed to max or complete the game. pathetic kids crying over a little thing.

It is really annoying people to see people complaining because developers want to make money or something they made. You pay 60 bucks for the game and they give it to you. You pay 55 bucks to a different company who owes them nothing in return (they get no money for their product) so they make you pay 10 bucks to get all the content. Maybe if you support the company who made the game instead of a third rate pawn shop you wouldnt have anything to worry about.

Too everyone complaining:

1) This argument will not matter until at least a few months after the release. You can't buy a used game Day 1 after all, and there is no reason this shouldn't be a day one pick up.

2) Online passes aren't going anywhere. If they did, half of these games wouldn't come out and the gaming industry would halt. So if you enjoy playing games, quit whining, suck it up, and buy the game new or pay for the content.

Also, to anyone who has allowed this to change their decision on purchasing the game... You are passing on what is likely to be GOTY because you have to pay $5 to play as Catwoman? Congrats. You go ahead an make your statement. Meanwhile, I'll go shell out the $60 for the new game, get Catwoman, and get Robin since I pre-order, and I'll go play the heck out of a great game.

I don't like this online pass shit but seriously, if you want the game, just buy it brand new. Instead of waiting a couple of months to get it cheaper. It's called supporting the companies, if everyone waited to buy second-hand games, developers wouldn't make money which they use to make more games and DLC. I'm buying it brand new 'cause I know I want this game.

@133 I like a lot on here buy games new and can agree with yours and others points but people keep forgetting this also affects those who buy new in a negative way.
I'm talking about those that don't have Internet. Yes it is fairly common but some areas simply don't have Internet access and not at decent speeds, so should I have to suffer even though I got it new?
No it's discrimination and it needs to be done in a better way to achieve their intended goal

You know, all of you cheap asses that are crying over the whole 'buy new & get Catwoman' thing - why don't you change your mind, and pick this up at WalMart? If you buy new during the release window, not only do you get Batman: Arkham City + Catwoman, you also get the Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTY game packed in. Now is it worth your hard earned cash? Or should I pull out my tiny violin & play you a sad song to go with your boo-hooing?

@136 It's a business. I'm assuming that maybe 1% of potential customers have ABSOLUTELY no way to get internet access long enough to download the dlc (I used to not have LIVE myself, but I would take my box to a friend's house if there was a DLC I really wanted). There's no way a business is going to alter it's strategy to keep 1% of customers from leaving.

People have to drop this idea that the game industry exists to pander to your wants and needs. Sure, it's more consumer friendly than most industries, but they are still out there to make money people. Hands down.
